Pride Cup 2014

10259949_229102633953060_6173148862654836093_nOn Saturday May 3, the Inaugural Pride Cup will kick off and see two Victorian country teams battle it out in a match to celebrate diversity and tackle homophobia. In a match that is set to establish a new precedent for inclusion in sport for the LGBTI communities, the Senior Football and A Grade Netball teams from Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction will compete in the inaugural Pride Cup with the netball match starting at 1:15pm and football match at 2:10pm.

Two years ago it was impossible to get the AFL to come to the table to discuss homophobia in sport. On Saturday 3rd of May 2014, the AFL were providing the tables, chairs and a VIP luncheon for 80 invited guests at the pre-match function for the inaugural Pride Cup.

JOY 94.9’s Dean Beck was asked by the AFL to MC the luncheon prior to the game. Hear all of the official speeches:

Two arch-rivals, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction battled for Aussie Rules first ever rainbow round, to win the Pride Cup, celebrating sexual diversity and inclusion in sport. Yarra Glen took home the prize, a fitting result for the club that still to this day, has the only Gay Aussie Rules Footballer in the nation, Jason Ball.

Dean Beck filed the following story for the Community Radio Network’s nationally daily current affairs program The Wire:
