Our Flying Unicorn
You may have noticed for this year’s ‘Summer of JOY’ we have a new mascot – the JOY Flying Unicorn!
If you think that it would fit right into a scene from The Simpsons or Futurama, you could be right.
The artist is Dean Rankine, a veteran of the Australian comic scene. He’s currently writing and drawing backup stories for Simpsons Comics (published by Matt Groening’s Bongo Comics).
Dean is a regular contributor to Australian MAD Magazine and he drew ‘My Mother is a Brain-Eating Zombie’ and ‘Flatman and Ribbon’ for the UK’s longest-running comic, The Dandy.
Dean’s other credits include comics in Mania, KidZone, Krash, K-Zone, Wacky But True and Kids Alive magazines. His collection of work God’s Love is Like a Conjoined Twin is published by Lamp Post.
On the side he produces health education brochures such as ‘Bogan Bunny’s Guide to Drinking’ under the banner of Ground Up Comix.
On a recent visit to JOY to talk to the gang from Sci-Fi & Squeam, he was nice enough to do a few personalised illustrations for the presenters, and also drew the wonderful JOY Flying Unicorn!
We are currently looking for a name for Dean’s creation, so go to JOY’s Facebook page if you have any brilliant ideas!
