How will you be spending Mardi Gras? With JOY, of course!

How will you be spending Mardi Gras? With JOY, of course!

How will you be spending Mardi Gras? With JOY, of course!

If you haven’t had a chance to book a ticket to Sydney for the silly season, we have you covered. You won’t miss a single part of the best Pride parade in the world!

Kicking off your Mardi Gras coverage on Friday 3 March at 4pm AEDT are JOY faves Chris and Cam with the much-loved C + C Drive Factory, broadcasting live from the newly renovated Flinders Hotel in Sydney. The boys and a host of special guests will make sure you’re up to date with everything trivial, trashy and truthful in the world of Mardi Gras.

Straight after that, JOY’s resident DJ Dylan Adler, aka Dylicious, will tell you where the party is at if you’re planning to hit up the Mardi Gras parties. And then he will drop a set and keep the party going at the Flinders.

On Saturday – or, as we like to call it, Parade Day – start your day with a BANG at 7am AEDT. We’ll warm you up with lots of laughs on the Mardi Gras Breakfast Show presented by Anastasia and Warren in Melbourne.

Then we cross back to Sydney, where our flagship news and current affairs show, Saturday Magazine, will be broadcasting a live three-hour special from SBS’s studios in Sydney. The team will be talking all things Mardi Gras, as well as using the opportunity to chat to politicians, community leaders and allies about the importance of the festival and of community.

By this stage, our Melbourne crew with be champing at the bit to get the pre-party party started! At 1pm AEDT, Adam Richard and Michael Pohl will step up to the plate to pump up the jam and get the Mardi Gras tunes and trivia crankin’.

From 4pm AEDT, Gina, Bec and David from our show Family Matters will cross over to the Parade marshalling area to pin down all the stars of Mardi Gras before the parade kicks off at 7pm.

By then the streets will be covered in glitter and our commentary team will be awake, so you’ll be able to join stars of radio and stage Michael Dalton and Dean Arcuri as they fill us in on all the action as it happens. They will be joined by our street team – comedian Kirsty Webeck, media personality Dylicious and special guest Mitchell Coombs – who will be touching and reporting on the marchers as they parade on by. The broadcast will go through till 11pm AEDT across Australia and the world, and not a stone will be left unturned.

And then, for something completely different, we are happy and proud to announce that the team from World Wide Wave, with the assistance of JOY colleagues, will present a bilingual and multicultural queer special on Sunday morning from 7 to 9am AEDT. You’ll wake up to hear amazing and brave people telling their coming-out stories in their native language, mixed in with music from the global LGBTIQ community. Then, from 9 to 10am AEDT, join the Urban Dreaming team as they present a queer Indigenous special, including prominent Indigenous figures Zaachariaha Fielding and Tim Bishop talking about their coming-out journeys.

No party is complete without a rockin’ after-party! Live from Sydney for a post-Parade brunch from 10am to 12pm, join the only two JOYsters who will be awake on Sunday morning, Chris and Tennille, as they reflect on the night that was and curse their lack of sleep.

That will wrap up our Sydney broadcast, but don’t worry – there will be no Mardi Gras remorse the party continues. From 12 to 4pm AEDT, join the Popchops boys as they spend the afternoon counting down their top 50 songs by LGBTIQA+ artists.

All good things must come to an end, but not before Warren looks back on the weekend that was in a highlights show to top all highlights shows, featuring the good, the bad and the ugly of our coverage as we hang on to the last remaining moments of the party.
