Programming – August

The spring grid has begun very successfully. We have had excellent interactions with our audience, especially for our returning shows THE G SPOT with Gillian and Claire, and DRIVING YOU MAD, DRIVING YOU CRAZY with David and Sue. People are loving having them back, and the response has been amazing. Both shows have slotted straight back in as if they only took a week off.

One of the other really positive attributes of this grid is that we are getting more diverse voices on the air. Comparing the winter to the spring grid, we have ten more female-identifying presenters and three more trans-identifying presenters in our specialist programming alone.

Our indigenous show, URBAN DREAMING, has had two presenters join the team to bring the total to four. They work on a rotating roster, which means that the show keeps running even when the creator of the show, Suri, is away. Matthew, who has completed his JOY radio training, is the newest member of the team, and Kal is in training now.
JOY represents the wider LGBTIQA+ communities, so it is important for us always to hold the goals of diversity and representation in our sights.

Some other exciting news is the appointment of a new music director, as our amazing long-term MD, Chris Jameson, hangs up his hat to spend more time with family and friends. Chris has served as music director for eight years and has been responsible for lifting and creating the sound of JOY, especially on weekdays. He leaves big shoes to fill.

We are pleased to announce that our very own Michael Polh, Eurovision correspondent and BABBLE POP! host, has been appointed to the post. We advertised internally and externally and there was a lot of interest from some very talented people, but Michael’s leadership skills, music knowledge and history at JOY made him the front-runner for the position. He is currently doing handover with Chris and will take up the mantle on 4 September. We wish Michael all the best and know that he will smash it out of the park.

Last, but not least, JOY is getting YES ready. We have spent the past couple of weeks reinforcing on air how important it is to be enrolled to vote and to have your details up to date with the Australian Electoral Commission – now, as we move past the due date for enrolling, we will be launching an on-air ‘YES’ campaign with a message similar to that of this year’s Radiothon. We will be sharing our stories, asking listeners to share theirs, and reminding our audience and the wider community that marriage equality is a fundamental human right.

Keep an eye out for more on this – but get ready to get YES ready!
