This week Sonja Hammer and Lauren Stardust speak to women who are working to help people experiencing homelessness in Australia about their organisations.
Amber Magna chats to Lauren and Sonja about Feel Good Food Packs, an organisation which distributes healthy food packages to people who are sleeping rough and can’t access nutritious food. You can help by volunteering, donating through their website, or buying a copy of their delicious, nutritious cookbook!
Yvonne Hong from Pets of the Homeless is back at JOY, explaining the importance of pets as providers of companionship, security, and comfort — and the difficulties that homeless people face when trying to find shelter that will allow them to keep their pets with them. Pets of the Homeless helps pet owners who are homeless or at-risk to access pet food, veterinary care, and pet-friendly shelter. Visit their Facebook page to find donation drop-off points.
Melbourne Period Project co-founder Donna Zen has also returned to JOY. She and Nat Cruz coordinate a network of volunteers who provide pads and tampons to people who have their period while homeless in Melbourne. Donna talks about how difficult it can be to buy expensive period products and access hygiene services while sleeping rough, and busts some homelessness myths with Sonja and Lauren.
