BROAD’s Night at the Opera & Safe Steps

Deborah-CheethamDuring  Radiothon Week, Sonja and Lauren brought some operatic drama to the studio, speaking to Deborah Cheetham about her career, her experiences as an Indigenous soprano singer, and her opinions about science fiction show Cleverman. Songs played include Deborah’s performance of Dali Mana Gamarana, Mozart’s Voi Che Sapete, Dame Joan Sutehrland’s performance of Love Live Forever, and Véronique Gens’ performance of Tristes Apprêts.

[Content Warning: Discussion of domestic violence, abusive relationships, suicide, and rape]

safe-stepsRebecca Smith comes in to tell us about the Safe Steps program, its aims in preventing family violence, and how the organisation helped her escape from an abusive relationship. Rebecca explains what led her to become an outspoken feminist and an advocate for survivors of domestic violence.

If you or anyone you know are experiencing abuse and family violence, Safe Steps can organise a crisis intervention and provide other assistance like refuge shelters and educational programs. Call them on 1800 015 188 for 24/7 crisis response, or visit their website. You can also call Wire 1300 134 130 or visit www.wire.org.au for domestic violence survivors’ advocacy.

To finish up, Lauren reads out some stories from listeners about how they came to identify as feminists. JOY’s CEO Tennille Moisel pops in to the studio to share her story and tells us how to become a JOY member during Radiothon week, which was a great success earlier this year. Another broad doing great things!
