Homelessness Week on BROAD

pets of the homelessApril 1st marks the start of Homelessness Week, and Sonja Hammer is following up on BROAD’s homelessness special from earlier this year. This year’s theme is Homelessness Counts, and BROAD is hosting a great panel of women working to support and protect homeless people.

Amber Magna from Feel Good Food Packs, Yvonne Hong from Pets of the Homeless, and Donna Zen from the Melbourne Period Project have returned to talk about their organisations and what they’re doing this week.

wireIn the studio for the first time is Anna Anderson from Wire’s Amica Club, a support group for women. Amica meets three times a week and offers workshops, a free lunch, and a safe space for women experiencing or at risk of domestic violence or homelessness.

Fiona talks about the increase in homelessness this winter, lack of affordable housing, and the responsibility of government to support and protect women experiencing violence and homelessness. Other organisations mentioned are Youth Projects and the Homeless Persons Union Victoria.

westbethAlso in the studio is Rohan Spong, director of Winter at Westbeth, a documentary about an artist housing project in New York. You can see it at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Get your tickets here before they’re all sold out!
