Dying to Tell: Ep 2 – Advance Care Planning with Claire McNamara

Approximately 85% of Australians will die after a chronic illness, not a sudden event and up to 50% will be incapable of making their own decision at the end of life.  Despite the foreseeability of the dying process and the benefits of advance care planning, very few people have advance care plans.

Hopefully in the next decade that will begin to change with the passing the The Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Bill 2016 passed the Parliament on 24 November last year, enshrining advance care directives in law.

Claire McNamara, Senior Legal Officer who has been described by her colleagues from Office of the Public Advocate as ‘the bees knees’ on this new legislation, joins Stephanie and Family Matters to discuss.

At Family Matters we are hoping to lay the platitudes and clichés to rest by having a frank discussion about end of life care, and then death care. Join the team with this ‘Dying To Tell’ podcast series as we ask all those difficult questions to medical and legal experts as well funeral industry professionals.
