ELECTION UPDATE: The Gay News Week team wrap up the week in Australian Federal politics and share their thoughts on what’s in store for the campaign leading up to September 7.

RUSSIAN OLYMPICS: With the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games looming, serious questions are being raised over the welfare of gay and lesbian athletes in Russia, after President Vladimir Putin signed anti-gay laws into legislation. The IOC had previously reassured their athletes that the laws would not affect them, however the politician who presented the bill in the Russian parliament says the government doesn’t have the right to suspend the law. Former Olympic medallist, and ENUF Campaign ambassador Ji Wallace joins us to discuss the situation.

TRANS NEWS: Spokesperson for Transgender Victoria, Sally Goldner, brings us up to date in all of the latest news affecting the trans community. Stories include a new ruling by the Family Court which will see trans youth no longer need court authorisation to begin hormone blocking treatment; a new study, funded by beyondblue, will look at the mental health of transgender people – the first study to look exclusively at transgendered peoples’ experiences since 2007; and Independent NSW MP Alex Greenwich and the Greens are pushing for greater protections for the trans and intersex communities.
