Our music director has been on some well-deserved R+R for a couple of weeks, so it’s a mammoth new-music list today.

Kicking us off is 17-year-old Sydney-based singer-songwriter Jai Waetford, who placed third on The X Factor (Australia) in 2013, with his latest single, Living Not Dreaming.

Dami Im stood alongside 2014 Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst during the Sydney Mardi Gras celebrations as SBS announced the 2013 Australian X Factor winner would be our representative in Stockholm in May for the 2016 contest. Her song Sound of Silence has many of the hallmarks of a Eurovision winner.  We certainly hope she goes the distance.

One Direction renegade Zayn’s first single rocketed to the top of the charts around the world last month. The second single, ‘Like I Would’, is probably a bit more of a slow burner.

We’re catching up on the juggernaut that is Norwegian producer Alan Walker. In three short weeks his debut single, Faded (featuring compatriot Iselin Solheim), has topped the charts around the world. If you haven’t already heard this one, give it a listen – we think you’ll love it.

Dutch producer Armin Van Buuren stretches the boundaries of dance music once again, calling on the talents of heavy-rock band Kensington for his latest single, Heading Up High.

New Zealand-based out-and-proud singer-songwriter Pip Brown, better known as Ladyhawke, has a new album in the works for June. The first single, ‘A Love Song’, is up there with her biggest hit to date, ‘My Delirium’, which came out back in 2008.

UK-based singer-songwriter Birdy is best known in Australia for her 2011 6x platinum cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’. Her latest single, ‘Keeping Your Head Up’, has been given the remix treatment by the producer who topped the charts recently with his cover of ‘Fast Car’, Jonas Blue.  The combination is outstanding.

They’re back! Black Angus and Connie Mitchell never really went away, but this is the first release for some time specifically targeted at radio, and ‘I Ain’t Over You’ is the Sneaky Sound System you remember and love.

Out-and-proud Melbourne-based DJ-producer James Fraser (Stereolove) has teamed up with California-based vocalist Sara Loera once again after their top 20 ranking on the US dance charts with their cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic, ‘Sara’. This time ‘Losing My Heart’ is an original track and a first for James in the songwriting stakes.

Brisbane-based Sinead Burgess is a bit of a fave here at JOY, and the second single, ‘Outlaw’, from her debut EP Wolf is another excellent pop offering.

Best known in Australia for her recent #12 hit ‘Here’ from her debut album, Canadian singer-songwriter Alessia Cara’s second single, ‘Wild Things’, is very much to our liking. We think it will be to yours as well.

Set your alarm and tune into Rochén, Adam or Michael on the six at six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
