New music to weekdays (21 June 2017)
Kicking off our new music this week is the fifth single from The Weeknd’s third album, Starboy. The Canadian singer-songwriter-producer’s ‘Rockin’ is more closely aligned stylistically with the first two singles, ‘Starboy’ and ‘I Feel it Coming’, and is sure to figure highly in our charts in coming weeks.
Scottish DJ-singer-songwriter-producer extraordinaire Calvin Harris is set to release his new album on 30 June. Called Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, it’s expected to contain ten tracks, all collaborations with some of the biggest singers and producers in the world. Four of the tracks have been released since February, and ‘Feels’ will be the third featured on JOY. The feel-good urban-funk song features vocals from Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean (who are all credited with co-writing duties too).
The last single from Brisbane-based indie-pop band Sheppard, ‘Keep Me Crazy’, managed to get a huge number of radio stations adding it to their playlist, five million Spotify streams and a top 20 radio airplay position. And yet it still didn’t ignite the buying public and so it failed to be the hit we think it deserved to be. Not to be discouraged, the band have their next single, ‘Edge of the Night’, ready to go. With a twist on their style, it’s a tongue-in-cheek funk-pop throwback. Again, we think you’ll love it.
Byron Bay-raised, Berlin-based electronic band Parcels have dropped their latest single, ‘Overnight’, co-written and produced by none other than French electronic masters Daft Punk. The surprise release, apparently written at a secret location in France, has taken the whole world by storm. We think this could be the biggest indie-pop hit of the year.
Straight out of the realm of ‘instant gay disco classics’ comes the latest single from legendary American producer-songwriter-guitarist Nile Rodgers, designed specifically for the 2017 Pride circuits of USA and Europe. Co-written and produced with out-and-proud New York-based superstar DJ-producer Tony Moran, and featuring the vocals of Kimberly Davis, the lead singer for Nile’s iconic band Chic, ‘My Fire’ also comes with a plethora of remixes to ensure there’s something for every room in the club. We’ve gone with a remix from the the revered English DJ and electronic music duo Moto Blanco.
Set your alarm and tune into Michael on the Six at Six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
