It’s a big week of music, so let’s get straight into it.
He took Australia straight to a Eurovision fifth place in Vienna with ‘Tonight Again’, and the soulful sounds of Guy Sebastian are back in his latest. ‘High on Me’ is a U-turn away from his last EP, Part 1, straight back into the days of ‘Gold’. Guy penned the song while on a writing holiday in Bali, which was obviously also an opportunity to show off his new abs to the world.
There’s been patchy success for Maroon 5 of late, but the Adam Levine-fronted band keep trying. This time they have help from up-and-coming RnB star SZA in ‘What Lovers Do’. As a Muslim woman of colour, she has been making waves in the American music scene. This collaboration should launch her into the spotlight of the mainstream, where she deserves to be.
We’ve been waiting since 2015 for a new single from British singer Paloma Faith, and our patience has been rewarded. ‘Crybaby’ is the lead single from her forthcoming fourth studio album, The Architect, and is a perfect fit for JOY’s weekday sound.
About a year ago, Ryan Tedder announced that OneRepublic would stop releasing albums and instead would drop singles whenever they felt the need to. ‘Rich Love’ is the latest in the random release schedule. Simen Eriksrud, Espen Berg and Niklas Strandbråten, also known as Seeb, join the ‘Rich Love’ party with a touch of Norwegian production. They have had some success with their remix of Mike Posner’s ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’ and debut single ‘Breathe’. Will this get them known in Australia? We will find out.
Wafia Al-Rikabi is WAFIA, a Brisbane-based singer and songwriter. She was born in the Netherlands to Iraqi and Syrian parents, and many members of her family have applied for refugee status in Australia. ‘Bodies’ was written on the night when these applications were rejected. Co-written with Ben Abraham and produced by Robopop, the song reminds us that people the world over are fighting for the right to being safe and that we all have a hand in their success. It’s a lush piece of electro-pop, practically made for our communities.
Who could forget Michael Jackon’s ‘Thriller’? Jason Derulo has channelled MJ’s zombies in the video for ‘If I’m Lucky‘, and his piercing blue eyes will keep you watching. The song’s not too bad, either – you’ll end up singing along.
