Currently a leading topic of discussion in the Australian media, the Royal Commission into Family Violence has unveiled an epidemic of violence in Australian homes.

But another type of violence, often overlooked and vastly under-reported is homophobic and heterosexist violence and harassment, which some say is still just as prevalent today as it was in the 1980s.

Research shows, seven out of ten people from metropolitan areas and nine out of ten people from regional areas in Victoria, don’t report homophobic violence to police.

This week our host, Emma Arnold talks to La Trobe University’s William Leonard about the findings of his research into the health and wellbeing of LGBTI Australians, which was funded by beyondblue and covers the prevalence of homophobic violence in our society.

Co-producer, Stephanie McLean also catches up with Greg Adkins from the Victorian Anti Violence Project for a chat about his personal experience with homophobia, and what needs to be done to combat this issue.
