Swimming with Sharks; a cautionary tale

The result of Ireland’s referendum on marriage equality has been celebrated around the world, and held up as an example of a successful public debate on the issue. But a recently published study has drawn attention to just what the effects of a No campaign can be. swimming-with-sharks

Dr Sharon Dane, along with Dr Liz Short from Victoria University and Dr Grainne Healy from the Irish Yes campaign have recently published the findings of their study into the negative social and psychological impacts of Ireland’s marriage equality referendum NO campaign.

Dr Dane joins the program to discuss the findings of their study, Swimming with Sharks, in more detail.

You can read the complete study and results here

Prominent Indigenous leaders have also joined the call to drop the Plebiscite. There are fears the ugliness of the No campaign will hurt the prospects for Indigenous constitutional recognition, as it will be the same people from the Ultra Right stirring up hatred.

Mark McMillan, associate professor of indigenous rights at the University of Melbourne joins the program.

And while we wait for Labor’s final decision on the Plebiscite, Liberal MP Trent Zimmerman has expressed his fears that blocking the plebiscite will see Marriage Equality taken off the table for years.
