Mardi Gras – Never Just For White Fellas

Tonight, Ruby and Sarah spoke with Tim Bishop, co-curator and researcher behind the first Mardi Gras showcase for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; Koori Gras.

Last year, Tim compiled a timeline of the participation of the First People’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, sistergirl, brotherboy, intersex and queer community at Mardi Gras. Stretching back to the 80s, Tim’s work hasshined a light on the overlooked work done by First Australians for the LGBT community.

Tim’s exhibition opens on Feb 21 in Redfern, NSW.

We spoke about the importance of creating space for First Australian participation in the LGBTI community, and why Koori Gras is just the beginning.
