We’ve spent so much time talking about the plebiscite, what news have we been missing out on? : August 15th 2017

We’ve spent so much time talking about the potential postal plebiscite and marriage equality this past week, that theres plenty of important news thats flown under the radar. So on this episode of The Informer we take a look at some of the key stories you might have missed beyond the daily grind of marriage equality news.

Last week some of the prominent leaders of the indigenous community came together to talk constitional reform. The Prime Minister is deferring any official response to proposals and talk of a referendum which would enshrine a voice in parliament for indigenous Australians. Declan Fry a Yorta Yorta man from the University of Melbourne is talks to Ruby about indigenous recognition.

Last week there was a lot that happened for the LGBTIQ sector of Victorian Health. Simon Ruth from the Victorian AIDS Council chats to Ruby and Ian and catches them up on some of the big headlines; the Minister for Health and Equality announced an ICE aaction grant with a specific focus on the Bendigo Region and VAC Country, AFAO went to Canberra when everyone else was talking about Marriage Equality and made a HIV Blueprint for the future and $3 million over four years was
announced to develop comprehensive specialist services for LGBTI Victorians who experience or are at risk of experiencing family violence.

Matt Janson from ACON chats about recent launch of a project that aims to improve LGBTIA inclusion in Health and Welfare practices and Ian gets us up to date on the unexpected and worrying proposals in New South Wales to use public health laws to stigmatise people living with HIV.

If you are an Australian Citizen and you’re details are up to date or you’re not fully registered with the Australian Electoral Commission, you will not get a chance to have you say. Whether in in a postal survey, in a future election. If you are not already registered or need to update your details you need to register by next Thursday 24 Aug – it’s easy, just go to the AEC website.

Ruby and Ian are your hosts for this episode of The Informer.
