The final track on Episode 5 was “Hotline Bling” by Drake. If you listen carefully to the percussion at the beginning of the track it sounds a lot like “Why Can’t We Live Together” by Timmy Thomas.
“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs. The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.
Song Notes
MC Hammer / Rick James
The 1990 track “You Can’t Touch This” is considered to be MC Hammer’s signature song and is his most successful single.
Along with Hammer, Rick James shares songwriting credits with Alonzo Miller because the song samples the prominent opening riff of “Super Freak”.
Missy Elliot / Frank Smith
One of my favourite all time songs – “Gossip Folks (feat Ludacris)” by Missy Elliot is a goodie. The track was released back in 2002.
There were some really awesome remixes done of this track as well by Mousse T and FatBoy Slim which are well worth checking out.
The song reached number 22 in the charts and stayed in the charts for 12 weeks.
The refrain of “Gossip Folks” samples the 1981 song “Double Dutch Bus” by Frankie Smith. Have a listen through the tracks below.

Sarah McLachlan / Harry Chapin
That was Sarah McLachlan “Just Like Me” featuring DMC – half of Run DMC.
This song used the same melody and almost the same chorus lyrics, but with entirely revised lyrics in the verses so as to make the song about DMC’s adoption and feelings towards his birth mother.
“Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin was released all the way back in 1974. The song was also notably covered by Ugly Kid Joe.
