Love Me Like a Stranger by The Fans. From the 1984 album, Mystery Date. They’re from Buffalo, like me, though the album was produced in Canada.

+Wait till the morning by Red Abyss (aka Rockbitch). 1992 single from this UK metal band, mostly women – known for performing nude and engaging in sex acts on stage. They also tossed a golden condom into the audience and whoever caught it had to go backstage and have sex with one or more band members. All members are bisexual, I believe. This is from the 1992 album, Luci’s Love Child.

The Machineries of Joy by Die Krupps. Request.

+Hear Me Calling by 2WO Third3 (two-thirds). They were a gay four piece 1990s electropop group, with three performing members and one non-performing songwriting member. This is their 1994 debut single.

+Go Fuck Your Ass Off by Leaether Strip. From the 1990 debut album, The Pleasure of Penetration. The band is a Danish musical project founded in January1988 by Claus Larsen, who is apparently gay as the band is listed on a gay musician website.

Every Wave by Bangah. From their 1984 self-titled EP, their only release from what I can tell.

The Wet Dream by Lords of Acid. Request.

Surprised by Minks. One of two tracks by this band on the 1984 compilation, Hit the Floor, from Gender Records in the US. I can’t find anything else by or about them.

After the Snow Melts by Clever Lines. Track on the 1985 compilation, 8 Essential Attitudes from Frantic Records.

Life Long by Doo Blan Tant. They were from Athens, GA and were made up of Sam Mixon and Robbie Collins. 1984 was their formative year when they released a 6-song EP, Rhythm Method, that included this track. They were done by 1986 when Mixon moved on.

Holiday Girl by The And. The band released 3 singles in between 1984-1988 and disappeared without a trace. This was from 1984 so I assume it’s their debut. Bandmembers were: Drums — “Bam-Bam” Schneider, Engineer — Bruce Malm, Producer — Michael Brozek and Vocals & Bass — Matt Ahrens.

Aussies brought to you by the letter A – none played this year

1980’s Civilisation by Altar Ego. Sydney band that’s new to me. This is from their 1984 self-titled EP.

*You Should Hear how She Talks about You by Angela Ayers.  She’d been a bit of a star in her native NZ in the early 70s and then disappeared, reappearing again at the end of the decade in Australia, where she put out a couple of singles, including this cover of Melissa Manchester’s tune.

*Confrontation by The Aliens.  This track was no. 18 on the Aussie chart on 4 Jan 1980.  They were a Melbourne band that formed in April 1978. They were one of the first local bands of the late 1970s to adopt a “uniform” of “black clothes and skinny, white ties”. This is their debut single from Dec 1979.

*A Good Soundtrack by The Aints.  This is from their 1991 album, Ascension.  The band started playing around Sydney on 13 April 1991 with Ed Kuepper (guitar, vocals), Kent Steedman (bass) and Tim Reeves (drums).

*What More Can I do by The Allsorts.  1988 recording of this Aussie ska band named after a licorice lolly that I’m sure will appear in some people’s Easter baskets next week.

*Spider and Fly by Ruth Apelt. 1994 track included in a compilation CD called Australian Women in Song that I got from 3 Chords and the Truth host Andy awhile back. Thank you, Andy! She is a Brisbane folk singer who was up and coming in the 90s, supporting Ani DiFranco and others when they touried Oz.

Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics. Request.

*Don’t Fall in Love by The Ferrets. Request.

True Colors by Cyndi Lauper. Request.

Is This What You Promised Me by Hoorah! Boys! Hoorah!  Their 1984 debut single from EMI in the UK. They only released one other.

Man Who Dies Everyday by Spot The Dog. 1982 cover of this Ultravox tune by this UK band.

Music Man by Zamp Nicall. From his 1985 debut album, The New Volunteer. He had a second album in 1991 and has spent the subsequent years as a music editor for television and movies – including Baywatch, Nip/Tuck and a bunch of others.

Heartland by Kingdoms. Their only single, it was released in the UK and France in 1984.
