United Nations: A new voice for LGBTI people

Flag_United_NationsBroadcast – 5 July 2016

‘Historic’, ‘monumental’ and ‘transformative’ are some of the words being used to describe the big news of the last week. We’re not talking about Australia’s Federal election; amidst all of our political excitement, the United Nations passed a resolution to appoint an independent expert on sexuality and gender identity.

  • How long did it take to get to this point?
  • Who was against it and what tactics did they employ to try to water the resolution down?
  • What role did Australians play in getting the resolution through?

To find out what it means to LGBTI people around the world, we hear from international LGBTI leaders and Chile’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Marta Mauras.
