Israel: Being Jewish & Lesbian

Israeli FlagBroadcast – 17 January 2017

In the early 1990s, the words ‘Lesbian’ and ‘Jewish’ were rarely heard in the same sentence. Despite acceptance of the broader LGBTI community leaping ahead, the intersection of religion and sexuality didn’t really sit well in the Jewish community, so a feisty group of women decided to do something about it.

  • What inspired a collective of lesbians to join together in solidarity to form a Jewish Lesbian group?
  • What trailblazing ‘firsts’ has this group achieved?
  • How did the group overcome the hurdles they encountered from the Jewish community – and from the LGBT community?

To share their story, we are joined in the studio by Shauna Skerha from the Jewish Lesbian Group of Victoria and Kate Lefoe, Co-Director of the documentary film – It’s Who We Are – telling the 20 year history of this group at a special Midsumma showing.
