/ World Wide Wave / Asia/Pacific / THE PHILIPPINES: THE BATTLE AGAINST LGBTI BULLYING IN SCHOOLS

Philippines Flag

Our time at school often frames our future – what we learn, the friends we meet, the teachers that challenge or inspire us and, in doing so, help chart our future careers or interests. But the experience is not a happy one for everyone. Bullying at school can make growing up a painful nightmare. One such place of concern is The Philippines.

Is student humiliation in front of their class a social norm or overt homophobia?
What are students taught in sex education and how does that impact HIV?
What are the concerning signs for the future from the current generation of young people?

Making us sit to attention in the LGBTI classroom, we were joined by Ryan Thoreson from Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org.) – author of the report Just Let Us Be – Discrimination against LGBT students in the Philippines
