Welcome to my Touch Of Pink blog page, 2 hours chock full of dance pop, a little bit girlie and a little bit gay, from all around the world. Ain’t we got fun?

More great music choices this week, including 11 (count ‘em), gay artists. My particular favourites are from Neon Jungle (cos we just can’t get enuf of those UK girl groups), Karmin, Paloma Faith (looks good, sounds amazing), VV Brown, Hercules and Love Affair, not forgetting the still stunning after all these years, Lisa Stansfield … yay!

Single Of The Week is “Burn Bright” from Marc Almond. He has been my all-time favourite gay artist (though Boy George is a close second), from his Soft Cells days back in 1981, through his solo career up to the present day. He is still recording, although  to a smaller, more select fan base now.

Here follows tonight’s playlist. Tune in to us this Saturday on JOY 94.9 from  7pm for 26 tracks in 2 hours (yes, we know!). Your hosts are Dick and his friands (he loves those little almond meal treats).

What Have We Seen ThIs Week ?

Film: Cuban Fire : This was one of those British feel-good movies, about a guy (the largish Nick Frost) who was a champion salsa dancer as a teenager, then stopped when he was beaten up wearing his dance outfit outdoors. He retired from dancing until he developed a crush on his (female) boss, who was going to salsa lessons. He decides to take up dancing again to impress her. What follows is a sweet rom-com, with the usual British sensibilities. It’s not demanding viewing, and if you’re not too critical, it’s a lot of fun.

Melbourne Queer Film Festival FILMS … too bad, it’s ovah for another year …

Any Day Now : What a movie, and what a performance from Alan Cumming. Set in West Hollywood in 1979, the story was about a female impersonator who, upset over the drinking and drug taking abuse by a sole parent of a 14 year old downs syndrome boy. The mother goes into jail and Alan Cumming becomes a foster parent, and later tries to adopt the child. There follows much heart-warming and heart-breaking action. A beautifully performed movie.

EXCELLENT. A must-see. Fortunately it begins an exclusive release at the Nova on 10th April 2014 for those who didn’t catch it at MQFF.

Burning Blue : I loved this movie. It was about 4 Navy pilots who were close friends, two of whom became even closer. Amongst much flying footage (like a gay Top Gun) developed a story about how their friends reacted and how the Navy reacted when they found out. Set in the Clinton don’t ask, don’t tell days, this was a tragic romance, and a slice of military prejudice from the 80’s and 90’s.

Five Dances : Bit of an arty-farty movie, about 5 dancers rehearsing for a modern dance interspersed with scenes of their relationships, including the developing romance between the two male leads. Lots of sweaty muscles in motion and some tender love scenes. But enjoyable.

Gerontophilia : Director Bruce La Bruce is turning into the new John Waters. This was such a good movie about a very attractive young man who had a fetish about making love to geriatrics. In particular, he develops a close relationship with the charming Marvin. It was so beautifully handled and that any concerns one may have had over the subject matter were changed for the positive by the films end. Bravo!

Bad Hair : Not so sure about this movie. Set in a poor tenement complex in Venezuela, a young boy with frizzy wants to have straight hair and become a pop singer. The single mother is not sympathetic to his plight and spends most of the movie trying to get rid of him to the kid’s dead husband’s mother. A bit too depressing, and I tried very hard to find any of the characters sympathetic, with the exception of the boy’s girl friend, a feisty, slightly chunky girl with attitude.

Dick’s Top 5 Videos For The Week

Mystery Skulls – Ghost (a homage to The Exorcist)

BLX2 ft Elton John – I wish we were leaving (sublime song + he’s cute)

ZZ Ward – Last love song (so sad)

Neon Jungle – Welcome to the jungle (a new UK girl group … woohoo!)

Karmin – Pulses (great video and  Nick Noonan goes topless)

Bonus (and they’re both really good !!!!)

Jennifer Lopez – I luh ya papi (some male exploitation by the J-Lo)

Full Frontal Freedom –  # SameLoveDance (gorgeous dance to the Same Love song))

That’s your lot ….. now sashay away …
