Can’t you hear me? – I’m telling you something important!

We reflect upon recent examples of the public rallying and voicing their concerns about how our present government or style of democracy is failing to reflect the wishes of the people. In particular, we talk about the rally in support of Marriage Equality last Saturday 27 November 2017 – a crowd of up to 20,000 supporters. A week earlier, a large crowd rallied in support of the refugees being held on Manus Island – “Bring them Home”.

We celebrate the birthday of Bette Midler (born 1/12/1945), US singer and gay-ally, who got her break into show business by appearing in the Continental Baths for a gay audience; & Margaret Cho, US comedian / actor, birthday (born 5/12/1968); and Britney Spears (born 2/12/1981) – the oldest teenage in the business!

In world history at this time, we remember the homophobic death of Mathew Shepard (born 1/12/1976), and the consequential elimination of the gay provocation defence in US law. We also are reminded of the life of Harvey Milk (died 27/11/1978) who was a gay activist and impetus for the US Gay Liberation movement, publisher and public official in San Francisco, who with Mayor Moscone, was assassinated by a deranged assailant. Pierre Seel (died 25/11/2005) was a survivor of Nazi concentration camps for Jews and gays, who lived to tell his story of persecution.

This week we shine the spotlight on the annual celebration of our own community radio station JOY, which first went to air 24 years ago on 1 Dec 1993.
