Making history or repeating history … is nothing new anymore?

Gay weddings may be new (again) – despite ex-PM Abbot. Newly-weds, like Mr Abbot’s sister Christine Forster, can have the classic bridal waltz – as long as one partner of the happy couple has learnt to dance backwards! Some dance clinics are catering to a new range of customers, joining specialist bakers and florists who provide ‘old’ products.

We recall International Holocaust Memorial Day (Jan 27) and pause to remember that, as well as the horrors of the concentration camps and furnaces, many gay people were swept away as part of the purge. Hopefully humankind will remember these events and learnt from them.

We hope to learn from our own shortcomings in the management of natural Australian forests and the summer bushfires, and possibly take notice of how our First Peoples use fire to advantage in their as custody of country.

With the heaps of so-called recyclable waste piling up, we are recognising that instead of sending our mixed waste to China, we will soon have to locally sort our rubbish and convert it into new products or energy sources, or completely change our habits with current packaging eg plastic micro-bead glitter can be replaced by natural the mineral mica – if we really need to have glitter at all.

With the new session of Federal Parliament opening this month in Canberra, we see ceremonies inherited from previous generations and from infrequently used pageantry of British royalty – ie Coronations.

We wish birthday greetings to Peter Allen Australian showman (10/2/1944 – 18/6/1992), James Dean US Emo actor (8/2/1931 – 30/9/1955), and Robbie Williams UK pop star (13/2/1961).
