Welcome to JOY Media – Transition Statement

Welcome to JOY Media – Transition Statement

In April this year, we invited our audiences and supporters to #GrowWithJOY.

This theme was chosen to reflect JOY’s growth and development, leading us to this point in time, where we are now ready to announce an important change to our name.

From our community radio roots in 1993, JOY has evolved with new streams of content and service offerings for the LGBTIQA+ community and our allies. These offerings are available across an increasing number of channels, which has grown our reach and accessibility while also building our sustainability long into the future.

Over the last few years, we have expanded our radio content to cater to the online podcast age, grown our news services, increased our digital audience engagement, and formally established our training courses into a service we provide internally and externally via JOY Academy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we developed remote broadcasting to provide greater access for content makers and created video and tech services under the name JOY Gigs to support digital accessibility and community connection for important online events.

Recognising these changes, we are now renaming our organisation from JOY to JOY Media, retaining our byline of Out Loud Proud – reflecting the important work we continue to do to uplift the lives of our community.

Beneath our new name will sit three sub-brands – JOY 94.9, JOY Academy and JOY Gigs.

We are excited to make this important change, and we look forward to continuing our journey together with our sole purpose of building a more inclusive Australia.

JOY Media is Australia’s only LGBTIQA+ community media organisation, and we exist for and because of you!

Say hello to JOY Media

JOY Media is Australia’s not for profit LGBTIQA+ media organisation. JOY Media represents the people, stories, news, music, and lived experiences of Australia’s LGBTIQA+ community and our allies.

Our organisation is built on three key pillars – content, training and events. These are better known as JOY 94.9, JOY Academy and JOY Gigs.

Through each of these services and content offerings, we carry out our purpose of building a more inclusive Australia for all. We do this by providing the opportunity for freedom of expression, the breaking down of isolation and the celebration of the culture, achievements, and pride of the diverse rainbow community.

You can hear and see stories from the LGBTIQA+ community and our allies on JOY 94.9 Radio (FM and DAB+), online at joy.org.au via livestream, in our podcasts and youtube channel.

JOY Media sustains our work through donations, memberships, philanthropic funding and by providing income generating services to the community including advertising, live broadcasting, podcasting, educational training, audio visual services and talent provision.

The Pillars within JOY Media

JOY Media is our organisation name – reflecting our work as a content and media service provider.  Underneath this, sit three important pillars.

JOY 94.9 produces content via radio, streaming and podcasts including relevant, up to date news and music from Australian rainbow artists. First established in 1993, JOY 94.9 is the home of the world’s largest library of LGBTIQA+ content.

JOY Academy provides training and education services to the public in podcasting, radio programming, and diversity and inclusion best practice. Our Online Podcasting Course, our Face to Face Radio Training and our Inclusion Training are offered in flexible learning formats, both in person and online.

JOY Gigs provides audio and visual services such as outside broadcasts, video capture and livestreaming, technical support, and audio production.

What’s Next?

We are so excited for this next phase in our journey and cannot wait for you to come along it with us. Feel free to explore our revamped website, check out our new services, and dive into your favourite LGBTIQA+ content.

FAQs

Why the rainbow gradient?

The JOY Media gradient logo is reflective of the traditional rainbow as seen in nature.  We are embracing the rainbow themes associated with our community in its original form: sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony and soul.

JOY Media acknowledges we are all gradients; diverse, unique, and varied in our lived experiences, expression and identities. We’re making a design commitment to better reflect the evolution of our rainbow community, and to ensure we are always inclusive as our community and flags change.
