Celebrating Foster Care Week
[This post was sponsored by Fostering Connections]
This Foster Care Week, Fostering Connections the state-wide foster care recruitment service is calling on Victorians from all walks of life to play a part in their community by becoming foster carers.
Foster Care Week 2022 runs from Sunday 11 to Saturday 17 September and is an annual week of celebration recognising foster carers and the invaluable contribution they make to the lives of children, young people and families in our community.
Foster care is the temporary care of children and young people aged 0-18 by members of the community who become trained and accredited foster carers. The goal if foster care is to reunify children with their birth families, if and when it is safe to do so.
Long-term and short-term foster carers make a difference to thousands of children across Victoria every day – whether that’s over a weekend, a month or several years.
If you’re single, partnered, living in a share house, working full time or not working at all, if you have a spare bedroom and want to change a young person’s life, you’ve got what it takes to be a foster carer.
Whilst fostering can be challenging, there are lots of rewarding parts too and seemingly small contributions can make a positive impact on a child in your care.
“At the end of the day, fostering is just a really cool thing to do, and the kids are really cool. Even if you give them one good memory that they can pull out of at a bad time in their life, then you’ve made a difference.” – Andrea, foster carer
