This documentary has been chosen to close the Melbourne International Film Festival this weekend, so tune in to hear more about what promises to be a fascinating and emotional look into the lives of our LGBTQIA+ elders.

LGBTQIA+ seniors have been pioneers in many ways, beginning the fight for equality in an era when being queer could land you in jail, lose you your job or worse. But as they have aged, some started going back into the closet in nursing homes or when accessing aged-care services, owing to feeling unsafe in these environments.

In the middle of Australia’s divisive marriage equality vote, Melbourne hosted a gala event to honour and celebrate its LGBTQIA+ elders. These are their stories.

This film will close the festival. It’s on at 1.30pm and 7.15pm on Sunday 19 August at ACMI.

With the 9 to 5 film remake, Dano and Mason have taken it upon themselves to recast the originals with a more current bunch. They also chat with Simon Trevorrow and Grant Scicluna representing ‘Fresh’, a new web series written and produced by Nikki Tran.

Web series FRESH! springs from an exciting crop of new Aussie filmmakers, paying homage to market life with one of the most culturally diverse ensembles in Australian storytelling history. After its theatrical premiere at the Melbourne edition of Series Mania, lauded by Variety as a festival that “is to TV drama what the Cannes Film Festival is to film,” the short-form series was launched online, with all six episodes available on YouTube.

From creator and writer/producer Nikki Tran and producer Simon Trevorrow, FRESH! is a warm and satirical workplace dramedy that takes us into the joys and pitfalls of multi-culturalism against the backdrop of a Melbourne fresh food market. Set in a world where businesses are still family-run and bargains are bellowed in at least three different languages, the series brings into focus observations on race, workplace politics and family dynamics. FRESH! was filmed at local markets operating across Melbourne, including Footscray, Preston and Dandenong markets.

Tran says, “Footscray Market was integral to how my family connected to the wider community. As a child of parents who were once refugees, it’s important for me to create something that honours the experiences and stories of migrants in Australia, but not romanticise them.”

Al Cossar- Associate Artistic Director of the Melbourne International Film Festival joined us in studio to talk about the program, 373 minutes of Nic Cage and the best queer films of the festival.

Celebrating its 67th year, The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) has unveiled its 2018 program. Featuring 254 feature films, 90 shorts and 19 virtual reality experiences, the festival will include 27 world premieres and 168 Australian premieres over 18 action-packed days of cinema.

In a program hallmarked by its geographic and directorial breadth, the programming team – led by Carey and Associate Artistic Director Al Cossar – has weaved a series of curatorial threads that will enable audiences to experience films from 80 countries.

This year’s audiences will be presented with the festival’s largest ever selection of titles direct from Cannes, along with a collection of recently rediscovered and restored African cinema and a unique look at fashion’s influence on film and film’s influence on fashion.

Elsewhere, there will be a focus on Indigenous stories and storytelling and a retrospective look at the dazzling Italo-Crime genre.

For the first time since 2007, MIFF will take over Melbourne’s grand old picture palace, the Regent Theatre for its entire opening weekend.

A documentary film about the defiant women who kick started a feminist revolution in Australia – FUND IT NOW

We are joined in studio by Writer/Director- Catherine Dwyer and Executive Producer-Sue Maslin of the upcoming documentary Brazen Hussies.

Bringing together unseen archival footage from the 1960s and 1970s, home movies, photographs and news media with personal in-depth interviews, the film introduces contemporary audiences to an exciting and revolutionary chapter in Australian history. BRAZEN HUSSIES pays homage to the achievements of this daring and diverse group of activists while revealing that the feminist fight – with its emphasis on inclusiveness and sexual and cultural diversity – is as relevant and urgent today as ever.

Now in pre-production, the all-female filmmaking-team have put out a public call for funds to help them capture this history and the key figures of the movement, on screen.

“The Women’s Movement brought about great social, political and industrial change to Australian women’s lives and young people today are growing up in a different world thanks to their second wave sisters,” says writer-director Catherine Dwyer. “Brazen Hussies urgently speaks to our contemporary audience and capitalises on the growing international debate around gender equality. With the phenomenal #TimesUp and #MeToo movements and the groundswell of social and political action around gender in our society right now, we are witnesses to the beginning of a new era of dissent. The time for this film is right now,”.

The women’s movement was one of the greatest social and political movements of the 20th century. Yet there has never been a documentary that comprehensively documents the Australian history.
Brazen Hussies will feature candid interviews with second wave feminists including: Anne Summers, Elizabeth Reid, Pat O’Shane and many more.
Speaking on film as a collective narrative for the first time ever, they recall their involvement as members of Australia’s women’s liberation movement: the brazen hussies who reignited a feminist revolution.

Natalie is only one bender away from cracking her next big idea, but it may take a shame spiral in a luxury shopping centre to get there. Her career come-down is about to get very real.

Leticia Cáceres directs this side-splitting comedy on the contradictions of Melburnian multiculturalism, from the fast-paced mind of Hmong-Aussie playwright Michele Lee (winner of the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, for Rice).

Senator Janet Rice is once again in studio to talk about what’s going on in Aussie politics surrounding the topic of gender. With audio of national senator Barry O’Sullivan talking about the all to overdone issue with the “loo loo”, Rice also discusses the prevalent issue of trans “forced divorce”.

Victoria is set to join Queensland in becoming one of the first states to end forced divorce for trans people under marriage equality.

The state government is moving to eliminate the requirement in Victoria’s birth certificate laws that people correcting their gender must be unmarried.

“I’m so pleased that the Victorian government has introduced this legislation,” said Rice.

“Forcing trans people to divorce their partner before they can change their birth certificates is discriminatory.

“I urge other states to remove this discrimination so that we can have full marriage equality.”

On May 17, 1990, the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization approved the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD 10), which no longer listed homosexuality as a diagnosis.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness. The celebrations launched in 2004, and in 2013, commemorations took place in almost 120 countries, in all world regions.

The strikingly flamboyant Lady Rizo joined us in studio for an overall hilarious interview during her time apart of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. While the festival is done and dusted, it’s still worth listening to Rizo’s dulcet tones and trademark wit.

“An anarchist streak still runs through me,” says Lady Rizo, the singer-sophisticate who was once a teenage punk rocker. “I love the idea of claiming something that’s uncool and making it authentic.” To that end, the NYC-based artist has earned a name for herself by transforming nightclub-pop into experiences that are more soulful, more theatrical. A provocateur with an electric wit, Lady Rizo is a vessel for the spirits of Edith Piaf and Freddie Mercury.

Lady Rizo will be releasing Indigo, her second album, on August 18.

The New York Times once referred to Lady Rizo (né Amelia Zirin-Brown) as “a formidable belter who can sustain phrases and notes even when sprawled on her back on a piano and scissoring her legs.” They’re not alone in that enthusiasm.

With the release of her new album Home, Greta Bradman joins Lisa and Dee in studio to talk all about her journey through life living in such a musical family, and what these songs mean.

Stunning soprano Greta Bradman is one of Australasia’s most celebrated operatic and concert artists.  Her 2015 début album for Decca Classics My Hero received five-star reviews and topped the classical and classical crossover ARIA charts for several months.  Her new album Home is scheduled for release in 2018.

Recent performance highlights include Mimi (La bohème) for Opera Australia, Lisa (La sonnambula) for Victorian Opera and the title roles in Theodora (Canberra) and Rodelinda (Melbourne).

She has performed for world leaders from the UK, USA, China, India, Monaco and Australia; highlights include singing for Barack Obama, and a 2014 recital in St James’s Palace for the British Royal Family.  Winner of the 2013–14 Australian International Opera Award and the APRA/AMCOS Award in 2013, Greta is a Helpmann Award nominee and was Limelight Magazine’s 2010 Newcomer of the Year and their 2015 Australian Artist of the Year.

For the last 4 years the Laird Hotel in Abbortsford has held their infamous Midsumma Mooning event, where guys get on stage and bare all for a large crowd, and one lucky man is crowned the winner. The cheeky show has raised over $200,000 for AIDS related charities over the last 20 odd years. Hosted by JOY’s very own Dean Arcuri, we got all the dirt on what goes on behind that butt shaped hole in the wall.

Our ladies discuss an all female opponent- Wingo De Bingo, which will be coming to Midsumma in 2019.
