In this episode of For One Night Only (FONO), Pete Holmes talks to JOY Life Member, Mark Adams (Pronouns: He/Him). Mark was born in the small farming community of Lameroo in South Australia. He found it difficult being a queer kid at that time so hid it away. He then spent a year as an exchange student in Germany when he was 17. Once back in Australia, he moved to Adelaide and then to Melbourne in the 1990s. He spent three years in Dubai during the 2000s but was fired for being openly gay and returned to Melbourne with his partner. He was a presenter on JOY for 7 years and on the JOY Board for 4 years. He’s now practising as a lawyer.

In this episode of For One Night Only (FONO), Pete Holmes talks to Out & Proud intersex person and JOYlebrity Jason Turner (AKA Little Jason) – Pronouns he/they. Jason is the co-host of JOY’s intersex program “The I In Us” and has recently finished the JOY radio course. Jason was born in 1973 with a skin disease called Aplasia Cutis Congenital which meant that he was born without skin. He was also born with an intersex condition. He grew up on country along the east coast of Australia as an only child with his mother even though he was one of 5 kids and finally settled in Colac for his high school years. This was where he met his first girlfriend and their boyfriend but more on that later. Music & theatre have always been a part of their life and since moving to Melbourne he’s not only been a JOYlebrity but has also been involved in theatre, including nine stage productions – two on stage and 7 as stage manager. He’s also been involved in 2 album productions. He has also always loved cinema and goes off to the cinema 3 times a week. At 9 he sang in the Victorian Children’s Choir.

She is a passionate Aston Villa supporter (one of the oldest teams in the League) which means she’s frequently up at 2am or 4am in the early hours to watch them play. She is currently JOY’s Vice-President and was heavily involved in Melbourne Queer Film Festival for many years. She has met Kate Bush, Mother Theresa and gate crashed a Blondie party once! She’s worked as a journalist/editor/subeditor/reporter/presenter for 30 years and is a passionate lover of the arts.

Neil was born in Rangoon, Burma and came to Perth with his family when he was 8 and grew up in suburban Perth as a new migrant in the 70’s. He dropped out of Uni after a year and joined the public service. He became more aware of his sexuality during the 80’s at the time of the AIDS epidemic. He took a year off to travel to the UK when he was 28 and then returned to his Perth work and did a 3 month stint in Canberra. He returned to study and completed his accounting degree. Finally he moved to Melbourne in 2016 and started volunteering at JOY in 2016. He is a great lover of the arts and is currently the co-host of JOY’s Sunday Arts Magazine show.

Cal was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in a neighbourhood on the edge of the city called Brentwood. He loved sport and played baseball and swam at school until he found sports an unsafe environment due to his budding sexuality. During high school, he was heavily involved in theatre then went to Boston Uni where he got involved with comms, radio and photojournalism. He came to Australia when at Uni as part of an abroad program in 2005 and now is an Australian citizen. After coming out he got involved in various sporting clubs including the Sydney Convicts Rugby Club and Melbourne Surge. He’s also been involved in Melbourne’s leather community and hosts events at the Laird.

Paul Byrne-Moroney – Out, Proud Intersex Man and host of JOY’s “The I In Us”

In this episode of For One Night Only (FONO), Pete Holmes talks with that intersex man, Paul Byrne-Moroney – (Pronouns He/Him). Paul is a host of the brand new JOY show “The I in Us” which premiered on the current grid, and is really looking forward to raising the profile of the I in our LGBTQIA+ communities.

He was born in Mitcham on the hottest day in 1996 which was January 26th or Australia and Invasion Day. Back then you could order a silver spoon for a baby born on the day from the government but Paul’s parents forgot so he wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has been involved in reconciliation for 30 years. Now he just celebrates the day as his birthday. He struggled at High school and more about that later but overcame this and was successful at getting a Health Science degree with honours in his 30s. He also has a Diploma in Travel Writing & Photography and a Certificate in Tour guiding – WOW! He has been a tour guide at Melbourne’s Chinatown museum for 12 years, and still loves travel, writing & photography but has never found away to be paid for it! He’s had many other jobs including door-to-door sales, zoo keeper, clown, wizard and puppet! (Joking) He was also robbed at gunpoint… scary!

In this episode of For One Night Only (FONO), Pete Holmes talks with Out, Proud Gay Man, Jon Kok (Pronouns he/they) who began his rainbow journey as one of the founders of the Generation Youth float for Mardi Gras in the 90s, before moving into student activism as one of the Sydney Uni Sexuality Officers in the early 2000s. He spent much of the 2000s and 2010s as the Secretary or on the committee of Sydney Leather Pride before moving to Melbourne in 2015. He’s put on fireworks displays for Mardi Gras and the Bears, is the Secretary of PrEPaccessNOW (an HIV prevention charity) and has been delivering sexual health and sex education to the rainbow communities for more than 2 decades. Jon’s been an event manager, a massage therapist and business networking coach. Jon is a host of JOY’s Hide and Seek, and joined the JOY staff this year as the Office Coordinator and now the Office Manager.

Tex McKenzie – Out Proud Gay Man & Tireless Worker and Volunteer for the VAC & Thorne Harbour Health

In this episode of For One Night Only (FONO), Pete Holmes talks with Out, Proud Gay Man, Tex McKenzie (Pronouns he/him) who has been an absolutely tireless worker and volunteer for the Victorian AIDS Council and now Thorne Harbour Health and we explore much of this history. Tex was born and bred in the “Darling” part of Malvern in Melbourne. His school years were difficult after he realised that he was different in year 3. His first job was as an usher in a straight porn cinema in Melbourne and then moved to more full time work with our postal service. In 1989 he started to volunteer at the Victorian AIDS council (now Thorne Harbour Health) and since then has had many roles including volunteer and health educator. He also worked at the Laird hotel as a an entertainer from the early 1990’s until the early 2000s. He been to many ALSO and leather/fetish parties as a worker and is known by most of the LGBTIQA+ community in Melbourne.

Venetia Brissendon – Out Proud Bi-Sexual JOY Presenter, Musician, Social Worker

Venetia was born in Canberra, and initially came out as lesbian at the age of 19 because bi-sexuality wasn’t really an option back then but has now claimed that as part of her identity. She’s done public radio in Canberra, played in a band, and moved down to Melbourne to become a rock star which hasn’t happened yet! Had a background of depression so did a degree in Social work so she could help others and has worked in the drug and alcohol field for many years including 5 years at Thorne Harbour Health. She married her wife in the early 2000s in the Netherlands and had some difficulty getting divorced prior to the introduction of marriage equality in Australia.

In this episode of For One Night Only (FONO), Pete Holmes talks with the host of JOY’s sports show “Sidelined” who describes herself as a tennis tragic, Demetra Giannakopoulos (Pronouns She/Her). Demetra was born in the Queen Victoria Hospital (now a women’s centre) in Melbourne and grew up in Richmond and then the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. She is of Greek heritage and now lives in St Kilda. She worked as a litigation lawyer in the building sector for much of her career and is now a mediator in the same sector. She is also a filmmaker and has just finished writing, directing, and editing her first feature film titled “Love Rewind” – a new independent feature film made in Naarm, Melbourne, and set against the backdrop of the same-sex marriage postal vote. She has two new shows on JOY’s upcoming grid. “Kick It” premieres on July 15th at 4 pm and celebrates the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in Aus/NZ and “Life Is A Disco” premieres on September 7th and is a series of intimate, personal interviews featuring people who are LGBTIQA+ and from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
