INTERVIEW: Theresa Scalise from Cut Opera about La Beatles Boheme – April 28 and 29 on the Flagstaff Car Park Rooftop

David and Sue talk to Therea Scalise from Emotionworks Cut Opera They have as their mission to “re-invigorate and re-interpret the operatic form” and  “find new ways of presenting and preserving these archetypal operatic stories by making them concise, direct and adapted to a contemporary context”. Their latest offering is La Beatles Boheme which is the story of the four bohemians imagined as the Beatles. The beautiful music of Puccini’s La Boheme is augmented by Beatles classics in a tragic love story about two contrasting couples – the tempestuous and the romantic. It’s on 28 (4 & 8pm) and 29 April (4pm) on the rooftop of the Flagstaff Car Park at 535 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne. Tickets are available from the Emotionworks website and also from Try Booking

The Emotionworks website describes the show as follows:

Referencing the final rooftop concert of the Beatles, in true Cut Opera style, opera and rock go side by side in this season performed on a rooftop with spectacular views over Melbourne CBD.
This is the story of the four bohemians imagined as the Beatles. The beautiful music of Puccini’s La Boheme is augmented by Beatles classics in a tragic love story about two contrasting couples – the tempestuous and the romantic. It is as if Puccini had the Beatles in mind.

Directed by Julie Edwardson, award winning director with Opera Australia, the cast will include both opera and contemporary singers. The four lovers are performed by Alexandra Ioan, Patrick Macdevitt, Katy Turbitt and Michael Lampard with vocals and instrumentation by Peter Vadiveloo, Richard Woods and Wayne Cuebas.
In the tradition of Emotionworks Cut Opera this production will be cut down to around 90 minutes and have all the best Beatles songs mixed throughout. Come and sing-along to your favourite Beatles songs, laugh and cry, relax and enjoy a drink at the bar.  There will be cover if weather is inclement but if cold bring your woolies.
