Do you barrack for Geelong or are you a supporter of the AFL? Well, you need to #ListenNow to David & Sue when they talk to Jason Smith from Geelong Gallery about their latest exhibition “The Greatest Team Of All – Treasures from the Bob Gartland Collection” which is on until 10th November. This exhibition provides an account of the club through a history of photography, graphic design, and uniform design across a century. Bob Gartland has released from his collection for the first time precious 19th and early 20th century original photographs, film and sound recordings, and players’ garments. These treasures present a rich timeline of the club in an exhibition that is a truly immersive experience of the mighty blue and white from 1859 to now.

Bob Gartland is a life-long supporter of the Geelong Cats and a passionate historian of the Club, and of the lives and careers of its players. Over several decades, Gartland has collected tens of thousands of items of national importance.

You can find out more from the Geelong Gallery Website.

afl16David and Sue celebrate the pre-Grand Final public holiday by discussing sexy sports (pole-vaulting? really, David?), getting tongue tied (Sue’s brain takes the occasional holiday during the show), and … well … talking footy! This couple who agree on everything – ha! – go for the Doggies and the Swannies – but who goes for which team? Does someone who prefers a manicure to talking football have the slightest clue when it comes to picking a winner?
Plus the public holiday brings a welcome return of the request hour.
And in the studio ….
Tim Hoffmann, a member of the Uniting Church, talks about equal opportunity and discrimination, with particular reference to religious organisations and proposed government changes.
and
Artistic director Julie Edwardson and actor Katrina Waters talk about Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro versus Oz Rock and Aussie Rules and the fusion of music genres that makes for unstuffy opera, coming up shortly at North Port Oval (home of the Port Melbourne Football Club).

Celebrate!

They partied hard!

They partied hard!

Driving you home, driving you mad, driving you crazyDavid and Sue have been doing it for 6 years. Tonight, they, listeners, supporters and friends celebrate this milestone and look forward to many years to come.
Just how crazy can some people be driven?!

On the phone we have Dolly Diamond, Marcia Hines and, from his dentist’s waiting room no less!!, Todd McKenney. As well as their good wishes to David and Sue, this amazing trio of performers fill us in on what they’re up to.
Leanne Renfree, general manager of Switchboard phones in to reminisce about old times at JOY while John Caldwell, chairman of the Midsumma board, shares more recent memories. And former podcaster Brent calls to say he’s loving his Love in Hobart but missing Friday Drive. Missing you too, Brent!

In the studio we’ve got Jason Tuazon-McCheyne, Abba tragic and, more respectably, Senate candidate for the Australian Equality Party and president of the Purple Bombers.
Melbourne Queer Film Festival Program Manager Spiro Economopoulos, on a high after last night’s festival launch, drops by to chat about some festival stand-outs.

Also in the studio, three JOY favourites …
Ande, Newsreader and Joke-teller, is getting his own show, Black White and Rainbow. Listen out for next week’s launch.
And sadly, saying goodbye to Yes We Are, last show tonight on JOY. But not the last we hear from Lisa and Sammi. Great memories and looking to a bright future for two fab friends of Friday Drive.

Plus, so many wonderful emails and text messages from all of you (from on the high seas, in London, and nearer to home) –
… people who have helped David and Sue
… people who have been helped by David and Sue
… people who have been introduced to JOY by David and Sue and who have gone on to become JOY volunteers, presenters, podcasters, donors, patrons and so much more.

THANK YOU,  Friends for sharing your time with us on your Friday afternoon commute over the last six years. As you have all said “Here’s to the next six (or sixty!!) years!”
Let’s get together next Friday to kick off another year of driving you home, driving you mad, driving you crazy on Friday Drive on JOY94.9

Pride 2aHow well do David and Sue know stuff about music? Quite a few listeners put them to the “Who sang what?” test and after promising not to cheat (you believe this?!) the answer is clear – as mud!
On the plus side, the test songs form the basis of a great play list for the final hour. We won’t mention that Sue skives off for the last 30 minutes, but it is good to have Geoffrey in her chair (albeit briefly!).

Dolly Diamond and keyboard player/singer Mark Jones wow David and Sue with a live performance in the studio of one of their songs from Alive, Intimate & Up Late Dolly’s second appearance at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Who’d’ve thunk a keyboard could fit in the studio?! Needless to say, with Dolly Diamond you can’t avoid laughter along the way.

Briefly, because he’s supposed to be doing something else at JOY, Jason Ball has a few words to say about the Pride Cup. The third staging of this great sporting event will be at Yarra Glen on 16 April.

Have a great Easter break, stay safe on the roads, and we’ll meet again on April Fool’s Day  🙂

2016-03-11 - David and SueWhat is it with Friday Drive listeners and poop?! As soon as Sue asks if bats poo while they fly, the SMS screen goes into meltdown!
Sue declares she will not be made angry tonight. She jolly well ought not be cross – David doesn’t even try to nip the bat conversation in the bud … it runs on, so to speak.
The saving grace in all this – Sue learns not to open her mouth in astonishment (or to speak!) when she looks up at bats flying overhead.

In the studio tonight is Antony from the Melbourne Chargers. That’s rugby, if you’re not sporty!
Antony manages to get in a few words about the club’s fundraiser in between his snorts of laughter.

In the final hour,  to music for the ChillOut long weekend, David and Sue ponder having children together. Get past that fearsome thought and you’ll find out why it won’t happen … Sue can’t even remember her pretend children’s names so she’s not likely to remember which cabbage patch to find them in. Aaaargh!!
