The main goal of Stand Up is to implement their customised preventive programs into sporting clubs, in an attempt to eradicate homophobic language and behaviour developed  from the results of world first research from Monash University. We also explore the AFL as a safe space for athletes to be their authentic self and the barriers. Professional Aussie cricketer Andrew Tye AJ joins the show from 6:30pm to talk about the Perth Scorchers’ annual Pride game and being an awesome Ally. AJ has a unique way of showing he is an ally at every match not only the Pride match!  Perth Scorchers BBL|14 Pride Match will take place in the Club’s final home fixture against Adelaide Strikers at Optus Stadium on Saturday 18 January.

It is a sensational event with the aim of raising awareness that cricket is an inclusive space for the Rainbow community. If you are in the area – head along! So that means four days of free footy fun and entertainment on offer for fans of all ages to enjoy during the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final week.

We explore weight, weight loss treatments and how to approach obesity speaking with Adjunct Professor John Dixon, Swinburne University and Melbourne University,  one of the leading clinical researchers into obesity. John has produced over 300 original research and review publications in the obesity and weight gain area of health with the finding that obesity is a disease. John debunks common myths about obesity, exercise, and provides some great insights on weight management and the role the gut plays. (19:12)
And our Sport of the Week is badminton! Clint Proctor, the CEO of Badminton Victoria chats with us sharing why badminton could be the perfect sport for you! Outsports recorded 199 LGBTQ publicly out athletes who competed at the Paris Olympics, 64 of the 195 publicly out LGBTQ athletes took home a medal, and if TEAM LGBTQ was a nation, it would be 7th on the Paris 2024 medal count table, and 6th on the traditional gold-silver-bronze table! There are 42 publicly out lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer athletes at the Paris Paralympic Games and you can check out the fantastic list of athletes by name, sport, country, competition category (men, women, non-gendered), and gold, silver and bronze medals won.
We welcomed Nikki Ayres to the show with a huge cheer for making history in Australian sport. In just over seven minutes Nikki won Australia’s first-ever gold medal in Paralympic rowing with rowing partner Jed Altschwager in the PR3 mixed double sculls! In addition to being a super star on the water, Nikki is a legend on land selected to take part in the Australian Institute of Sport’s Thrive with Pride program and as an ambassador for Pride House-Paris 2024. Australian-born transgender cricketer Danielle McGahey. Danielle has dedicated her life to cricket: playing men’s grade cricket in Australia before moving to Canada where she was welcomed into cricketing circles – playing women’s cricket and was called into the national team in October 2022. In November 2023, the International Cricket Council (ICC) ruled players who have been through male puberty will not be able to compete in international women’s cricket. Danielle shares the impact on her international cricket career now being all but over, insights into the broader cricketing landscape and  what the future holds. (Starts 33:35)

Hong Kong’s Gay Games marked the first time in the inclusive sporting event’s 40-year history that it was handed to an Asian city and it all started on the 3rd November until the 11 November. The aim was to promote inclusivity, diversity, and equality through sport and cultural exchange. Some 2,000 athletes in Hong Kong took part in sports such as badminton, dodgeball, fencing, swimming, running and trail running and we had the very great pleasure of being joined by Richard Lie who took out gold in the 6km Trail run! Athletic prowess runs in the family as Richard’s sister also brought home gold! Richard’s response to “Would you go to another Gay Games event?” was an immediate yes!  It looks like Valencia, Spain 2026 is a must-do destination for the Lie family! (Starts 23:33)

Jeff McLean, Co-founder of Pride Tape, joins us from Canada to talk to us about the recent controversy with the National Ice-Hockey League (NHL) and how this has impacted players using the Rainbow coloured tape on their ice-hockey sticks across the National Hockey League  The NHL has made the extraordinary decision to ban players from all 32 teams from showing support for themed nights which includes using Pride-themed tape on their hockey sticks this season saying it’s a distraction from the game. Jeff joins us to share the positive response from the professional ice-hockey community and how you can support the reinstatement of the tape.

Richard McBrearty, Head Curator – Scottish Football Museum chats to us live from Glasgow to share how the Rainbow community features in the collection. The Gala Fairydean Rovers shirt work by Zander Murray – the first Scottish senior footballer to come out as gay in 2022 – is a prized artefact in Europe’s first national football museum.  And there are plans to continue to grow the collection and ensure football is for everyone. In Who is getting their game on? this week, it’s the National Hockey League teams and players. The National Hockey League has made the extraordinary decision to ban players from all 32 teams from showing support for themed nights which includes using Pride-themed tape on their hockey sticks this season saying it’s a distraction from the game. In response many of the National Hockey League teams have reached out to Jeff McLean, Co-founder of Pride Tape, to see how they can respond to the league’s decision and continue to support the Rainbow community.
You can support the reinstatement the use of Pride Tape in Sport by signing the petition now on Change. Org and sending a message to Gary Bettman Commissioner of the National Hockey League. There are 5548 signatures and counting! (Starts 41:50)

The Voice to Parliament. We have a referendum on Saturday the 14th October with voting compulsory. The YES Vote was supported by more than 20 of Australia’s biggest sporting organisations coming together in a landmark move on the 26 May this year – National Sorry Day to support the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.  AFL legend Michael Long, who has become a spokesperson for Indigenous rights and against racism in sport in Australia, recently arrived in Canberra after walking from Melbourne – a 20 day and 650km walk in support of the Voice to Parliament calling for change. Wil Stracke, Feminist, Lesbian, Trade Unionist tells us what the Voice is and what it’s not using a fantastic analogy with a brick and talks us through some arguments for the No case as listed in the official referendum booklet. Norman Mitchell, Secretary – Team Sydney Sports tells us all about the history of Team Sydney Sports, Sydney’s LGBTIQA+ sports clubs and associations and the role in supporting inclusive sporting clubs. The Purchas Cup, the Australasian regional gay rugby competition was held over the weekend in Perth’s Tompkins Park and saw fierce competition between the New Zealand Falcons, Adelaide University Sharks, Perth Rams, Brisbane Hustlers and Melbourne Chargers before the Sydney Convicts gallantly won the Purchas Cup silverware for 2023! There was a cup tier and a shield tier. The New Zealand Falcons took home the shield tier! Erik Denison, Researcher,  Social psychologist, Behavioural Scientist at BehaviourWorks, Monash University shares some ground-breaking research into how to tackle homophobic language sport and it’s not where you think! “Until the Australian and state governments start to prioritise protecting children from harm in sport and fix the structural and institutional problems which put them at risk, there is likely to be limited benefit from delivering one-off educational interventions’ .
A lever which may work as recommended by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is for councils, which often run sporting facilities and fund local clubs, to step in and help clubs comply with child safety standards and by introducing “safe sports officers” to attend training and matches, and help drive positive change. The call to action is to speak to your local council and and advocate for change at the local level. (Interview starts 10:37)

It was wonderful to hear of the support of allies like Eddie McGuire and his support as Collingwood President from 1998-2021 for the Pink Magpies starting up in August 2001. The first AFL Pride Group now called Collingwood Pride and still going strong.  And it was terrific to learn that the AFL Pride Groups are rallying to drive change with a series of requests in response to  Tanya Hosch, Executive General Manager Inclusion & Social Policy AFL asking the Rainbow community to provide guidance on what more should be done by the league. 
Kade Matthews, Community Development Manager, Proud2Play is a guest for the very first time in the JOY 94.9 Studio to share all about an incredible ground-breaking exhibition at the Australian Sports Museum celebrating the achievements of LGBTIQA+ athletes. The Pride Showcase is a permanent exhibition opening Friday August 25 on Wear it Purple Day. The exhibition features the stories of trailblazers such as Ian Roberts, Ellia Green, Sally Shipard, Ricki Coughlan, and Josh Cavallo. Their unique stories in sport are told through a mix of physical items and multimedia elements, with parts of the stories told in the athletes own words.  (14:10)

We head to  Western Australia to chat with Justin Barnes, President Team Perth about the thriving LGBTIQA+ sport scene in Western Australia. There are over twenty-three LGBTIQA+ sports clubs you can join from synchronised swimming, to triathlon to badminton to basketball. you name it – they’ve got it! Make sure to mark the month of November in your diary for an explosion of sporting activities and parties! (22:36)
And if you thought WA was the home of LGBTIQA+ sport – think again! We had to the Top End to chant to Jarrod Chakos, Top End Pride Committee Member. The team just held the amazingly successful Darwin Pride 2023 with four days of festivities. Sport was a major part of the event this year and the wonderful Top End Pride team of volunteers is proud of how sport is bringing the community together. (32:12)
