With the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games looming, serious questions are being raised over the welfare of gay and lesbian athletes in Russia, after President Vladimir Putin signed anti-gay laws into legislation. The IOC had previously reassured their athletes that the laws would not affect them, however the politician who presented the bill in the Russian parliament says the government doesn’t have the right to suspend the law.

Former Olympic medallist, and ENUF Campaign ambassador Ji Wallace joins us to discuss the situation.

There has been a lot of coverage of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s new ‘hard-line stance’ on asylum seeker boat arrivals, but very little has been said about the effect this decision will have on gay, lesbian and bisexual asylum seekers who will now be sent to Papua New Guinea under the new arrangement.

As Amnesty International spokesperson Senthorun Raj explains, Papua New Guinea criminalises homosexuality with imprisonment for up to 14 years.

UK PASSES MARRIAGE EQUALITY: Less than 24 hours after the British House of Lords passed a bill which would allow same-sex attracted people in the UK to get married, we speak with the campaign director of Out 4 Marriage, James Walsh.

EQUAL LOVE PUSH: Equal Marriage lobbying group Equal Love is pushing for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to pass marriage equality legislation in his first 100 days after the federal election, if he is re-elected.

LGBTI COUNSELING HOTLINE: $3.3 million dollars in new funding announced by the federal government will see the QLife telephone support service expanded across the country to provide a counseling service for LGBTI people. The funding was announced by WA Senator Louise Prett and the new Mental Health Minister, Jacinta Collins.

RAINBOWS (Surprise, Surprise!): Ashfield Council in NSW has approved a vote which will see the suburb of Summer Hill become the home of the first permanent rainbow crossing in Australia.

FRANCE: The first same-sex wedding is about to be held in France after French President François Hollande signed an historic bill into law on April 24. All Out Senior Campaign Manager Guillaume Bonnet is attending the wedding and joined the team to talk about the special occasion.

SDA: Members of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) are challenging their management’s stance on Equal Marriage.

AUSTRALIAN MARRIAGE VOTE: The chance of having a federal vote on marriage equality before the September election looks all but gone after Parliamentary Selection Committee voted to allow four more speakers on the topic, but failed to allocate time for MPs to cast their vote. The Greens had hoped their bill would go before Parliament before this year’s election.

ROYAL COMMISSION: We discuss the official commencement of the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse, including hearing from Justice Pete McClellan.
