Simon Ruth, CEO of Thorne Harbour Health, is with us in the studio. Simon shares his history working in drug and alcohol support, and about the drug and alcohol support Thorne Habour Health provides for our community. What is behind the organisation’s name change (it was formerly the Victorian AIDS Council)? How do LGBTIQ+ specific drug and alcohol support programs improve ouroutcomes? What factors make it difficult for our community to use drugs and alcohol safely, or to abstain? And what drug and alcohol issues are specific to our older community members?

There are so many free, wholistic offerings from Thorne Harbour Health to explore.

We learn that Touchbase.org.au has resources available for understanding how alcohol and drugs might interact with hormones and anti-retroviral drugs. Dale.org.au is a new online space aimed at supporting men in heterosexual relationships who are experiencing anxiety and/or depression while exploring their same sex attraction. We revisit Rewired, a free eight week program we have spoken about before. It’s aimed at helping men who have sex with men learn skills and strategies to change their methamphetamine use and better manage their mental health. And Drink Limits is a free eight week therapeutic group looking at alcohol use and anxiety for cis and trans Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer women, gender diverse and non-binary people.

We discuss the realistic portrayal of addiction in Rocketman, and we learn that a US state is going to review up to 2,700 court cases after allegations of a judge’s alcoholism.

Often it’s difficult to know where to start when dealing with Addiction or if you or a loved one might think that there is a problem. On this episode we look at some of the many strategies available to us as a 1st strategy, taking that first step is one of the most important things you might do on a journey.

A doctor or a Mental Health Care Plan might be the way to go or Rehab and Detox or a 12 step program might work for you. Interventions or Meditation can work or there are a range of telephone or online resources to use, many designed for our LGBTIQ+ community. Thorne Harbour Health and Queerspace offer free services and we have talked about Headspace, Hello Sunday Morning, Real Drug Talk, Quit Victoria, the 100Day Challenge, SHARC and Smart Recovery on Hooked on previous shows. Lifeline, Beyond Blue, Switchboard and AA all have great phone services as well.

We also take a look at pornography (not literally) as an Addiction of the Week and learn about NoFap and SLAA.
