Tonight we are “Goin’ Country” because a favoured listener, threw down the gauntlet and offered a challenge, with a Reba McEntire song.

All of the music you’re going to hear tonight has got a bit of a country flare to them, and you’re likely to hear most of these tracks in the outback bars of Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, or pretty much anywhere that the dirt is burnt red, the kangaroos are bouncing and the Emus are running.

When partying in the outback you know the drinks are going to be cold, the flies annoying, and the crowd just a little loud. But just over there, standing in the shadows will be that one person you lock eyes on, and you know the night is going to be pretty darn amazing. Once that connection is made, that’s when the outback magic happens. What happens from there is entirely up to you, and  what you eat for breakfast will be whatever is in the fridge.

You’re going to be hearing some of your favorites. Avicii, Alan Jackson, Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, John Denver and even Kenny Rogers. Also, Sammy Kershaw, Dolly Parton and the ever amazing Reba McEntire.

Bill

Bill was on the frontline, and a first responder, to the AIDS crisis in the 80’s and 90’s, and later came to mentor countless people to empower themselves while living with HIV.  For me, Bill was my mentor both in NAPWHA and ViiV Healthcare. If it wasn’t for Bill I would not have had the courage to expect more when more was needed, and I would not have advocated for myself, in a time when advocating for yourself was most important.

I will always remember this quote from Bill, when I was inconsolable after the death of my lover. “How lucky we are to have someone that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

May Bill rest in Power.

The Stonewall riots took place in June and July 1969 outside the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York City.  Homosexuality was illegal in New York City and many other places at the time.  Gay bars were seen as places of refuge where individuals who were considered sexually suspect could socialize in relative safety.  During a police raid at Stonewall on 28th June, 1969, Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender activist, and other transgender and queer individuals fought back against discrimination and brutality.  This sparked the multi-day riots that marked the turning point in the LGBTIQA+ rights movement.
