On the last show that the team has presented for Is Nothing Sacred on Joy 94.9 before being rested, Jim-pa and James are joined by former co-host Patrick and (by Skype) from Jamaica by current co-host Clovis to review the past three years and 140 shows.

The team talk about their favourite moments and the messages we received from listeners who emailed in to say goodbye.

The crew have a great time, playing some of our favourite tracks and wondering whether Is Nothing Sacred will be back in future.

Parliamentary Fall-out

On this second final installment of Is Nothing Sacred, the team is focused on the drawn-out election, with political guests Gareth Hutchins and Crispin Hull.

They are asked what their highlights for this year’s election are, including the One Nation Party’s attempt at a comeback.

Using the South Australian government as an analogy, Gareth is asked if a similar internal conflict between the parties could disrupt the federal government with a shorter term.

Then, Crispin is asked what would happen if one party has to be given a six year term while another will only get half that long.

First Nation Respect

In this third last instalment of Is Nothing Sacred, Jim and Steph (with James in panel) have a retrospect on NAIDOC, a week of respect for the Aboriginal population and what they have endured.

The crew is joined in the studio by local Aboriginal activist Brian Andy, who outlines why NAIDOC is so important, not just to the Native community, but also to the LGBT community.

Another special guest is Uncle Jack Charles, a pre-eminent who shares his experiences with being both a native and gay.

Jack also tells a story of how his elders prospered in rural Victoria, even when they were pushed out of Melbourne and segregated.

Both guests elaborate on the political renaissance of Aboriginal entitlement, along with how much farther we have to go despite all the progress we have made.

We have started to recover from the shock of Brexit, but what does it mean in the longer term?
Steph and Jim speak to British journalist William Ward to get the UK perspective and Gareth Hutchens from the Guardian newspaper for an Aussie point of view.
While Brexit may not be an economic disaster in the short term, is it a dark sign of what is to come in international politics?
There is also a shout-out to NADOC, a date reserved for the Aboriginal children that were taken from their families.

Studying The Votes

This week, Jim and Steph return to the HIV forum with Prof. Clovis Palmer, as he follows up the important scientific papers he has been mulling over for 28 days.

Among Clovis’ findings are when HIV began to gain recognition in America and abroad, along with early reactions and methods of treatment.

On a different tact, Tim Peppar, Director for Australian Marriage Equality, is also in the studio to state his case against the Liberals’ plebiscite to amend the right to have gay marriage in Australia.

Space Apes

What makes stars twinkle; Are wormholes in outer-space real; Will the whole universe eventually get sucked into a giant black hole???

These are all questions answered in this week’s episode, with a focus on SPACE!!!

With Jim and James away, Steph and Sarah speak with astrophysicists Professor Duncan Forbes from Swinburne University (over the phone) and Dr. Paul Lasky from Monash University (in the studio), who explain about gravity, black holes, colliding galaxies, and demonstrated how to make a noise like a gravitational wave (yes, for real).

The episode also features a bonus guest, Jacquie O’Brien from Zoos Victoria, who explains how changing food labelling can save the orangutans.

On a night when the LGBTI Community around the world is mourning and grieving the senseless tragedy of the Orlando FL massacre, the ISN team (ie. Jim) talk quite philosophically about why the recent Parliamentary apology to gay men for the senseless homophobia of Victoria’s old and now repealed laws criminalising homosexual behaviour.

Jim is joined on on the hosting panel by Jon P. Wintle, as they talk about the importance of this apology for the whole community – not just LGBTI people – as a factor that promotes tolerance and acceptance, validating leadership roles for LGBTI leaders beyond their own community and into the broader community.

Rory, the young trans-man intern, co-hosts and speaks about the effect of the apology on young people.

Joining in the studio are longtime LGBTI political activist Jamie Gardiner and Victorian Sexuality & Gender Commissioner Rowen Allen, while on the phone is Anna Brown: LGBTI activist, Human Rights lawyer and co-convener of Australians4Euality.

Community Power

This week, there’s a focus on the advantages of community radio, as Jim, Steph and James are joined by Richard Watts, stalwart of another volunteer-run station.

They talk about how the LBGTQ community is negelected in the commericial media sector, with the specialised non-profit media providing a rich alternative.

Over the phone, J.B. brings up how he became associated with community radio out in rural Horsham (with a fart sound-board), his move to Adelaide and how he has influenced JOY behind the scenes.

J.B. also gives his thoughts on why community radio is still important and how we can keep it running in an increasingly digital world.

Plastic Bans

Tonight is a rather heavy-handed edition of Is Nothing Sacred, as James and Rory have 3 guests in the studio that are all about ethical sustainability.

First is Dale, an advocate for pushing a bill to ban plastic bags and micro-beads in Victoria, to lessen pollution in the oceans.

Eric, a volunteer for Y-Gender and Minus 18, shares his sustainable living practices and gives pointers on how to source ethical binders – along with the 5 R’s.

Nat from Good On You divulges into her project that’s about ranking fashion brands on their ethical standards.

The ISN team speaks with Darren Sharp, Director of Social Surplus, about the sharing economy: what it is, what the benefits and risks are, and how people can be involved even if they have no money.
