Ally, Pride In Sport Award winner and Melbourne United Chief Marketing Officer Tom van de Vusse talking us through a commitment to Pride. JOY’s Outside Broadcast at the Regent Theatre for Oscar Ballet. Presented by Joel-King Mayne and Eve Gilbert, and produced by Con Keramitsis. Our hosts got a chance to chat with David Hallberg (the Australian Ballet’s artistic director), Jonathan Lo (the Australian Ballet’s music director), Christopher Wheeldon OBE (the man who was commissioned by David Hallberg to create Oscar), Joby Talbot (the composer of Oscar), and Jarryd Martin (playing Oscar Wilde)! In addition, our hosts were also joined by many special guests from the red carpet, including Gillian Cosgriff, Celia Pacquola, Campbell Harrison, Adam Noviello, Bathsheba, Yo! Mafia, and many more! In our 30th year, this podcast highlights all the action from the Pride March, Victoria’s Pride and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Don’t miss a minute of the queer events of 2024.

Pride March had 400 groups taking over Fitzroy St, St Kilda, featuring our roving reporters and the JOY team broadcasting from the balcony of the Victorian Pride Centre with more than 60 JOY marchers. The biggest contingent ever.

Victoria’s Pride in Gertrude St Fitzroy was another warm day filled with LGBTQIA+ diversity and love.

Mardi Gras parade highlights feature interviews with our roving reporters and anthemic music was a big celebration.

It is with sadness that we let our community know that Robert Suggett (Known as Tim Lennox to those at JOY), a life member, and long term volunteer and contributor to JOY’s success has passed away.

In this podcast special, those who knew Tim best share their memories, the impact that Tim had on them as well as the impact Tim had on JOY.

You will hear stories from Ange Barry (Current JOY CEO), Chris Furneaux, Conrad Browne, Damian Nicholas, Jason Gipps, Nick Tolhurst, Marg Gardner and Michael “Mikey” Barnett, as well as a News Bulletin from Tim from 2008, and an excerpt from Saturday Magazine, where JOY President, David “Macca” Mcarthy, and long-time JOY team member, David Hunt, share their memories.

On behalf of us all at JOY, I wish to acknowledge the wonderful contribution that Tim made to our organisation – you take our love and admiration with you Tim.

On the way to Tim’s Funeral in Geelong, a beautiful rainbow appeared in the direction of the cemetery where the ceremony was held.

In celebration of International Day of People with Disability 2021, disability advocate and LGBTIQA+ advocate Ruby Mountford interviews Dr Rhonda Galbally.

Dr Galbally is a Commissioner of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disabilities. She worked to develop the National Disability and Carer Alliance that brought together people with disabilities, families and carers with services to campaign for the National Disability insurance Scheme.

With a career spanning decades in positions at the highest levels, Dr Galbally has fought for the rights of people with disabilities and families to bring about a more inclusive future.

Victorian Pride Centre Opening – Rainbow Flag Raising Ceremony

The Victorian Pride Centre was officially opened on the morning of Sunday 11 July 2021. The centre was officially launched by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, Minister for Equality Martin Foley, and Mayor of the City of Port Phillip Louise Crawford and their speeches will be the subject of further podcasts on this channel. This podcast includes a short speech by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and the extraordinary version of Over the Rainbow sung as the rainbow flag was finally raised over the centre by jazz singer, cabaret artiste & gender transcendent diva, Mama Alto.

Mama Alto is a jazz singer, cabaret artiste & gender transcendent diva. She is a transgender & queer person of colour who works with the radical potential of storytelling, strength in softness and power in vulnerability.

‘Chicks Talkin’ Footy’ score win at CBAA Awards 2017

JOY 94.9 would like to congratulate our presenters Fiona, Bree, Rachael, Susannah, Rebecca and Danae of our sports program Chicks Talkin’ Footy on winning the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s award for ‘Excellence in Sports Broadcasting’ for 2017. The team have been right behind the AFLW league from day one and their passion and dedication is reflected in the program they present on a weekly basis.

In 2016, Holden signed up in support of the Australian Marriage Equality campaign, standing proudly beside the other Australian businesses calling for marriage equality – sooner not later. Holden are proud of using the icon status Australia has given them to break down any barriers to equal rights for our LGBT+ community. In 2017 they supported Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as a sponsor as well as the JOY 94.9 broadcast of the Mardi Gras parade itself. Furthermore it is with a great sense of pride that Holden has now supported JOY for back-to-back Radiothon campaigns in 2016 and 2017.

34th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial “Ending HIV & AIDS together”

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial ceremony is co-ordinated worldwide by the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) and hosted in Melbourne by Living Positive Victoria with the support of the Victorian AIDS Council, JOY 94.9, City of Melbourne and Positive Women Victoria.

The Candlelight Memorial, one of the world’s oldest and largest grassroots mobilisation campaigns for HIV awareness in the world. It began in 1983, and takes place every third Sunday in May, led by a coalition of some 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries. Last year saw more than 200,000 people attend Memorials around the globe.

With 37 million people living with HIV today, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial serves as an important community mobilisation campaign to raise social consciousness about HIV and AIDS, breaking down barriers of stigma and discrimination, and giving hope to new generations.

Government House opens doors for IDAHOBIT

On Monday May 15th, 2017, a reception was held for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) the first time at Government House. IDAHOBIT marks the date in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. The reception was attended by hundreds of members of the LGBTI community, and their supporters, from across Victoria. Official proceedings commenced with The Hon. Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria, then followed by Minister for Equality, the Hon. Martin Foley MP & Gender and Sexuality Commissioner Ro Allen.

The speeches were followed by Victoria’s LGBTI community mingling with old friends and getting to know new ones over drinks across the halls and grounds of Government House.

JOY 94.9 would like to thank The Hon. Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria for the work her and her team have done to acknowledge this day, an important one on the LGBTI calendar.

On Tuesday March 21st, La Trobe University Counselling Service Queer Programs at Bundoora in conjunction with the Student Union Queer Department and the Ally Program once again celebrated Pride with the LTU Pride Festival and they invited JOY 94.9 to be there and take part in the fun and festivities. The LTU Pride Festival aims to increase support, visibility, and an inclusive, health promoting university environment with aid of community stalls, fun inter-activities, performers and more.

Pride Centre Announcement Speech: City of Port Phillip Mayor Bernadene Voss

In this podcast, the City of Port Phillip Mayor Bernadene Voss shares her thoughts on the announcement of the Pride Centre location and the councils support for the LGBTI community over the years.

The Minister for Equality the Hon. Martin Foley this morning made the announcement that the long awaited Victorian Pride Centre will be built in St Kilda, with the Andrews Labor Government announcing it will be based at 79-81 Fitzroy Street in St Kilda. An extensive consultation period was conducted with the LGBTI community to identify what was the important elements of a successful Pride Centre, particularly around location, and this feedback was factored in to the decision to choose St Kilda. The St Kilda site was successful as it was vacant and was offered on a freehold basis to the Victorian Pride Centre on behalf of the LGBTI community, provided it operates there for the next 20 years. The Labor Government has invested $15 million toward the Pride Centre which will be bigger than San Francisco’s LGBTI Community Centre.

Chair of the Victorian Pride Centre Board Jude Munro spoke this morning in St Kilda, following the announcement from The Minister for Equality the Hon. One of the highlights of the 2017 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade on Saturday night was without a doubt the presence of Mardi Gras sponsor Holden. JOY 94.9 was also honored to have the support of Holden as one of our broadcast sponsors for the event this year which followed their support already for our 2016 JOY 94.9 Radiothon. This certainly was the icing on the cake for an incredible show of love and support that they are bringing to the diverse LGBTI community of Australia and we are sure they won’t be stopping any time soon!

Holden’s presence stood out on the night especially as they drove a variety of different Holden utes through Taylors Square featuring some of the communities favorite faces such as Bob Downe, Trevor Ashley, Ben Norris, Jordan Raskopoulos and more.

Happy 80th Gordon!

On October 13th, one of our longest running presenters on JOY 94.9, Gordon Wilson turns 80 years of age. Gordon has given so much to JOY over the past 9 years (he will celebrate 10 years on January the 1st, 2017) and just as much or more to so many other LGBTIQ community groups across Melbourne including Vintage Men & VAC.

This audio was lifted from Gordon’s regular weekly program (The Wednesday Morning Show) and includes some heart-warming messages by some of his JOY colleagues.

Ava Grimshaw-Hall is a country girl who moved to Melbourne this year to study at the Victorian College of the Arts High School. One of Ava’s assignments was to conduct an interview with someone who works in the media to gain insight into the media industry and experience a media organisation in operation first hand.

Join Ava as she talks to JOY 94.9 Broadcast and Producer, Dean Beck who has been delivering three diverse radio programs each week, for over seven years. Discover how Australia’s only LGBTI radio station operates as Dean takes Ava on a tour of the station. Then the tables turn on JOY 94.9’s most experienced interviewer when he becomes the guest and Ava asks the questions.

Hide and Seek EXTRA: International Overdose Awareness Day

The 31^st of August is International Overdose Awareness Day which aims to raise awareness of drug overdose, and reduce the stigma associated with overdose deaths. It acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends of those who have died or been permanently injured as a result of overdose.

Today families of people lost to overdose, alcohol and other drug organisations and Members of Parliament came together at Parliament House to mark International Overdose Awareness Day.

In Victoria last year, there were 217 overdose deaths from illicit drugs and many more fr
om prescription drugs. Fatal overdose is preventable.

The Victorian Government invests more than $17 million each year in a range of initiatives to reduce the harm associated with drug use, including fatal overdoses.

Dean Beck went along to the events and caught up with the State Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley who announced the Government will invest in a peer-led networks trial in six locations across Melbourne. Peer workers will draw on their local knowledge and experience of drug use to identify those at risk of overdosing and provide peer support to people who may not to utilise mainstream supports.

The Government earlier this year announced the introduction of real-time prescription monitoring – a key recommendation of many coronial inquests. The real-time prescription monitoring system will be backed by a $30 million investment to help medical clinics, pharmacies and hospitals to identify prescription drug seekers earlier and before their addiction escalates into serious harm.

Dean also spoke with Fiona Patten MLC who was hands-on when needle exchanges began over 30 years ago and he caught up with Finn, the founder of International Overdose Awareness Day.

Foley’s HEY Stack Hits $1M Purple Patch

It’s the 26^th of August and its Wear It With Purple Day – a day to support LGBTIQ youth and their allies.

JOY 94.9’s Dean Beck went along to Elwood College to witness grass-roots community advocacy and activism at its best.

16-year-old Trans advocate and Elwood College student Georgie Stone initiated and facilitated the event. Georgie and her family featured on Australian Story recently to discuss her very personal story of growing up as a young trans girl.

The assembled students and onlookers watched a screening of the About A Girl (ABC, Australian Story Aug 2016), then Georgie conducted a panel conversation featuring Victoria’s Minister for Mental Health and Equality, Martin Foley, Victoria’s Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality, Ro Allen and Georgie’s mum, a change-maker and founder of Transcend, Rebekah Robertson.

At the conclusion of the panel conversation, Dean Beck caught up with Minister Foley who announced that the Andrew’s Labor Government will continue it’s commitment to the HEY Grants, delivering a new offering of $1M to support LGBTI Youth and their mental health outcomes.
