To address this, PhD student at La Trobe University Edwina Kay hatched a plan together with JOY 94.9 presenter Steph Amir.  Edwina organised media training for the postgraduate students at La Trobe and Steph agreed to interview the participants for her show, Is Nothing Sacred. Sixteen people attended the training and thirteen of them came into JOY to be interviewed or were interviewed over the phone about their research.

This podcast is an abridged version of those interviews and is a small contribution to making academic research more accessible.

Thank-you to the La Trobe University Intellectual Climate Fund of the Graduate Research School and the College of Arts Social Sciences and Commerce and the JOY production team who supported this project.

On 9 February 2016, The Pancake Parlour restaurants will donate $1 to The Big Umbrella from every Pancake Stack sold. These much-needed funds will help The Big Umbrella’s A Real Meal program provide food to Melbourne’s marginalised community.

This morning on our Tuesday breakfast program Triple Threat,  a Pancake Parlour staffer was roped in to jumping on the mic to give presenters James and Cristina a run-down on this important day in history.

The Story Behind Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday (known in some countries as Pancake Tuesday) is a day in February or March preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent) that is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. In others, especially those (including Louisiana) where it is called Mardi Gras or some translation thereof, this is a carnival day, and also the last day of “fat eating” or “gorging” before the fasting period of Lent. Source: Wikipedia.org

JOY 94.9 is proud to be sponsored by Melbourne icon The Pancake Parlour and thank them for their support throughout the year.

Every Thursday during February, The Pancake Parlour’s team members (including some JOY volunteers and staff) will be volunteering with the A Real Meal program at Flinders Street Station to feed pancakes, soup and bakery goods to more than 300 people each week.

Carey Suffragette poster (1)Sonja Hammer from Second Breakfast, Sci-Fi and Squeam and Queer Geeks of Oz, has the great honour to interview Dr Helen Pankhurst, a direct descendant of Emmeline Pankhurst, the steely Edwardian matriarch famously photographed being hoisted away from a protest at the gates of Buckingham Palace by a policeman. Emmeline was Helen’s great-grandmother. Sylvia Pankhurst, who joined the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), the pro-suffrage group Emmeline founded in 1903, was her grandmother and suffragette leaders Christabel and Adela were her great-aunts.

Helen Pankhurst is in Australia to travel with the very first screening previews of Suffragette, the new movie based on the suffragette feminist movement in the UK from the early 20th century. It’s a film with a female director, writer and producers; very rare even today for a Hollywood movie.

Dr Helen Pankhurst is senior advisor for the Water Team of CARE USA and ambassador for CARE International.

The group was founded by five friends from Melbourne whose travels through South East Asia brought them to the Sangkhlaburi District in Northern Thailand. Within this region, over half the population is made up of ethnic groups displaced from nearby Burma, with little or no rights in Thailand and no support services.

What I most like about Echo is that ALL proceeds and fundraising go directly to the people they support. They each have day jobs and put their own money into admin so that means 100% of donations are used for their intention.

During this podcast J-Jon & Jenet (filling in for David and Sue on Friday Drive June 19th) spoke to one of the founding members of the organisation Jeremi Wallace to hear a little more about the group and what they are set to do on their upcoming trip to the region.

Echo are currently seeking support from the community for their aid work in South East Asia. If you feel you are in a position to help, you can lend a hand via their website echointernational.org.au or jump directly to https://chuffed.org/project/echointernational and donate now.

52 Tuesdays is a story of queer family in modern Australia.

16-year-old Billie’s reluctant path to independence is accelerated when her mother reveals plans for gender transition and their time together becomes limited to Tuesday afternoons. Filmed over the course of a year, once a week, every week – only on Tuesdays – these unique filmmaking rules bring a rare authenticity to this emotionally charged story of desire, responsibility and transformation.

52 Tuesdays premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and had Australian theatrical release in May 2014 but continues to screen internationally and garner awards, including Best Director at Sundance and Best Feature Film at our very own Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2014.

After you listen, you might just want to watch the film!

Rainbow Fashion Week New York 2015 https://joy.org.au/joyinterviewhighlights/2015/06/rainbow-fashion-week-new-york-2015/ Wed, 10 Jun 2015 04:18:18 +0000 http://joy.org.au/joyinterviewhighlights/?p=801 https://joy.org.au/joyinterviewhighlights/2015/06/rainbow-fashion-week-new-york-2015/#respond https://joy.org.au/joyinterviewhighlights/2015/06/rainbow-fashion-week-new-york-2015/feed/ 0 1Rainbow Fashion Week was created in June 2013.  This year the event runs from 19 to 26 June 2015 and is an official New York City Pre- Pride Fashion Show event.

Last year, Rainbow Fashion Week attracted over 25,000 queer and gay friendly attendees and showcased queer designers, photographers, models, makeup artists, stylist, merchants, retail buyers and thus increased access for gay fashion designers, and other supportive talents to ensure their future inclusion within New York’s creative pool.

Currently, there are no other fixed events representing the LGBT community in any of the major fashion capitals, especially in this manner. So from the hot maquilleuse, celebrity stylist, designer, choreographer, and set designer, Rainbow Fashion Week brings the audience eight days of queer fashion shows highlighting the  “Art of Fashion.”

During this podcast Adam and Ginni of our Wednesday breakfast show Rise Up speak to one of Australia’s hopeful at the event. Make sure you keep listening to JOY from next week for our daily updates from Rainbow Fashion Week and New York Pride itself.
