Living in the 70s https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/ Were you born in the Seventies? Join us for the sounds of the 70s every Saturday morning. Martin and Venetia will take you to the decade of denim flares, burnt orange kitchen bench tops and the birth of disco and glam rock! Each week we’ll have a 70’s theme that we’ll explore, such as songs from disaster movies, movement anthems, one hit wonders, daggy duets, funky numbers, and disco tracks that steamed up the dance floor in many an LGBTI venue, to name just a few. The 70s produced some amazing music and we’re here to make sure that music is shared and never lost. NOTE: Due to music licencing requirements this podcast is unavailable outside of Australia. We often talk about how much we have learned about Seventies music since we started doing this show, and also how our musical tastes have gathered both breadth and depth. So to celebrate this milestone, we thought we would share some of the songs that we have discovered along the way that have now become firm favourites. If you have been on this journey with us since our first show, some of these choices may surprise you. I think they would have surprised us.

Lovey dovey https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/10/22/some-favourite-seventies-love-songs/ Wed, 22 Oct 2025 07:35:24 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1300 Aaaah love. It makes the world go round, no doubt, and has been the inspiration for songwriters since songwriting first began. Sadly, many of the resulting ditties are less than memorable. Some love songs, however, truly do stand the test of time and are destined to be sung plaintively into a damp pillow, danced to joyfully at weddings or shyly shared in a DM. These are just a few of our hosts favourites from the fabulous Seventies.

Tracks we might have missed https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/10/14/songs-not-released-as-singles/ Tue, 14 Oct 2025 07:54:32 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1294 In the Seventies, not all great tracks were released as singles. So if you didn’t buy or borrow a band’s albums, there would be a lot of material that you might never get to hear. On this show, we can sometimes be guilty of playing an artists best known songs – usually single releases – and skipping over plenty of other great tracks. So we thought we would fix this and showcase some lesser known tracks that could only be found deep in the albums.  We think we’ve found some bangers.

Day dreams, night dreams, wishful thinking and fantasies, these are things all humans experience and of course have provided the inspiration for song writers and story tellers since we first gathered around a fire.  So what better theme for a show than songs about dreams.

Going up the country https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/07/07/seventies-songs-about-the-country/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 06:01:47 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1269 On Sunday this week it was World Rural Development Day. So of course on today’s show we are playing tracks about living in or being in the country. There’s nothing quite like feeling the fresh air in your lungs, hearing the birds calling and seeing the leaves of the tress rustling in a breeze. Many songwriters in the Seventies felt the same and waxed lyrical about the charms of country life. Or, couldn’t wait to leave it to head to the big smoke. Some aspects could do with developing, after all.

It’s money that we love https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/07/06/seventies-songs-about-money-2/ Sun, 06 Jul 2025 06:01:12 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1267 This week we are celebrating the end of the financial year by playing Seventies tracks all about money, honey.  Yes, filthy lucre, bread, dough, cash, that stuff that makes the world go round. We give little bits of metal and paper and plastic a made up value and then slave all of our lives to make sure we have enough of it. No wonder we also write songs about it. Here’s hoping that your books are balancing this week and your stocktakes are coming out even.

We’ve got you covered https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/06/24/cover-songs-of-the-70s/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 11:23:20 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1262 This week we are revisiting a previous theme and playing more Seventies covers of Seventies songs. It wasn’t unusual in that decade for a few different artists to release the same songs not very far apart. Sometimes the same song could be a hit for different artists, but occasionally a song that languished in relative obscurity would be reinterpreted  a made into a hit by somebody new.  That’s the beauty of music – so many possible ways of creating magic.

Vanda and Young https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/06/19/vanda-and-young/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 04:19:23 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1255 On this weeks show, we pay tribute to a great Australian musical partnership, performing, songwriting and producing duo Harry Vanda and George Young.

Vanda and Young met at an immigrant hostel in NSW when they were teenagers and went on to be part of the internationally successful band the Easybeats, writing all of the Easybeats’ later songs including the hit Friday on My Mind. Towards the end of the band’s career, they started producing and they went on to become  in house producers for the Albert Productions record label in the early 1970s. During that decade they contributed, as producers and/or songwriters, to about 20% of the music on the Australian charts, including tracks by Stevie Wright, Ted Mulry, John Paul Young and ACDC. In the late Seventies they returned to working on their own music, forming the band Flash and the Pan. Australian music would not have been the same without this powerhouse partnership.

Focus on Europe https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/05/25/tracks-from-european-artists-from-the-1970s/ Sun, 25 May 2025 13:19:15 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1245 As Marty is currently cohosting all the way from Malta, and the Eurovision song contest is in full swing, we thought that on this week’s show we would focus on European artists from the Seventies. Some of these songs were well known here in Australia, others may have been a little more niche, but all of them are by artists who were very successful in their own countries of origin. It’s a different kind of flavour this week. A little sweeter in general, a little more poppy, but altogether it’s a tasty smorgasbord of European treats.

And what a show we have. Women really were doing it for themselves in the 1970s, and doing it well. We have funk, we have pop, we have a little bit of punk. Women were everywhere, making their mark and, luckily for us, sharing their immense talent with the world.

Happy birthday Venetia! https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/03/12/happy-birthday-venetia/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 07:00:21 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1207 It’s Venetia’s birthday this week, so she got to sit back and relax while Marty did all the hard work of picking the tracks, finding some of her favourites as a little birthday treat.  He did a wonderful job – as usual – including some of the usual suspects but also a few extra special artists that haven’t made an appearance in her birthday list previously. Venetia thinks it’s a brilliant mix, hopefully you do too.

All the Davids https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/03/06/seventies-tracks-featuring-a-david/ Thu, 06 Mar 2025 02:52:46 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1202 So many Davids! When you think of Seventies music it’s hard not to think of at least a few artists called David – David Bowie, David Crosby, David Cassidy, David Essex, to name but a few. As an organising theme, it makes for an easy to put together play list and it’s a bit of fun too. So this week, all our artists have the first name David. What is the collective name for a group of Davids? A derby? A dreamboat? A depth? You decide.

It’s a killer show https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/02/26/killer-seventies-tracks/ Wed, 26 Feb 2025 01:16:55 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1194 This week our hosts are going a wee bit dark and playing tracks from the Seventies all about murder and death. The murder ballad has a long history, all the way from folk through country and even pop. Along with love and money, it’s one of life’s great themes, after all, explored in every art from, including music. And Seventies music is no exception. But despite the gruesome subject matter, some of these tracks really are killer.

The obsession of songwriters since time immemorial.  And just as well, as every relationship and every breakup must have its soundtrack. Who hasn’t wept into their pillow after finding just the right song to express their heartbreak, or sung along to a joyful ditty while in the grip of heart racing new love. Well, if you are experiencing either of those states, this show can provide some inspiration, if not consolation. Perhaps love is in the air, or perhaps it hurts right now. Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Dear departed https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/02/14/artists-we-lost-in-2024/ Fri, 14 Feb 2025 01:16:41 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1185 As we do every year, on this weeks show we look back and pay tribute to just some of the fabulous artists active in the 1970s that we lost in the previous year. Though they are gone, their music lives on. Some of them were well known to all, some were only well known to those who utilised their talents, like the fantastic session musician who created the iconic bass line for Walk On the Wild Side. What riches these artists have left behind. And how grateful we are that they did. Vale

Songs of 1975 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2025/01/21/songs-of-1975/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 04:33:04 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1178 Welcome to 2025. As has become tradition, here on our little radio program, on our first show of the year we look back to songs released 50 years ago. Which means, of course, that this year we are playing tracks from 1975.  Songs released a whole half century ago, but just as vibrant, wonderful and engaging today as they were back then. What a great year it was for music. And what a treat to listen to today.

It’s a carol free zone this Christmas https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/12/24/carol-free-christmas/ Tue, 24 Dec 2024 01:56:48 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1169 After five years of crafting Christmas shows from cheesy Seventies Christmas albums, Venetia put her foot down and declared this year a cheesy Christmas free zone. Instead we offer for your listening pleasure some of the tracks we might ourselves choose to play on Christmas day, as we prepare and share a meal with friends and family and then repose in a food coma on the couch.

We wish all of you, our lovely listeners, very happy holidays, and hope our little show adds to your cheer and joy. And for those of you missing the Christmas theme, no doubt order will soon be restored and Marty will bring it back next year 🙂

Number one songs from 1974 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/12/17/number-one-songs-from-1974/ Tue, 17 Dec 2024 05:08:14 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1166 It’s almost the end of the year. And as has become tradition on our show, at this time of year we look back to the songs that made it to the top of the charts 50 years ago. This year, that means the tracks we play on this weeks show are all number one hits from 1974. Not all of them were number one in America, or on the pop charts – they may have been number one in Australia, or the UK, or on the R&B charts. But they all made it to the top of the list on some chart, somewhere in the world.

Acclaimed producer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist and film scorer, Jones produced and/or contributed to some of the biggest hits of the 1970s and helped shape the raw talent of some of that decades brightest stars, including Michael Jackson, Patti Austen and Chaka Khan. On this weeks show we pay tribute to the jazzy, funky, soulful musical genius that was Quincy Jones.

Happy birthday JOY https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/12/05/tracks-from-lgbtiq-artists-from-the-seventies/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 14:54:51 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1159 This week the show went to air on December 1, which happens to be both World AIDS Day and JOY’s 31st birthday. Arising from a desire by JOY’s founder, John Oliver to bring community and comfort to HIV positive gay men isolated in hospital during the AIDS crisis, JOY first went to air on World AIDS Day in 1993. 31 years later, Australia’s first LGBTIQ radio station is still going strong.

JOY has a commitment to strongly feature LGBTIQA+ musical content across its programming. For niche shows like ours, it can be hard to do this every single show – a lot of artists in the 1970s were not as open about their sexuality and/or gender as they might have been today and there also may not be a lot of information about the personal lives of every band member, producer, song writer or session musician that never became a huge star. Nevertheless, every now and then we like to dedicate a whole show to featuring artists who we know for certain were part of our rainbow community. It seemed appropriate to do so this week. Happy birthday JOY – may we see many more.

Soulful sounds https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/11/20/soulful-tracks-from-the-seventies/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 05:11:19 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1152 Soul – one of the great musical genres to come out of mid 20th Century America, and a sound that still reverberates through pop music today.  Sharing it’s gospel roots with jazz, funk, blues and even rock, soul can be a hard genre to draw a neat boundary around, but it’s one of those things that you know it when you hear it.  Tending to favour virtuoso vocals, horns, rhythm sections at the forefront and a passionate feel, soul was the secular sibling to gospel and originally exclusively performed by African American artists. But many white artists from around the globe who grew up loving soul, started incorporating a soul feel into their sound. This week’s show explores just a few of these soul influenced  tracks.

It would go on to have many Australians glued to their TVs for an hour a week, getting their dose of Australian and international pop music news, performances and interviews for the next 13 years. The impact of Countdown on Australian music culture cannot be overstated. It was an institution, a cultural phenomenon, and it helped to shape the musical landscape of a whole generation – a generation which included the hosts of this show. This week’s show celebrates the 50 year anniversary of Countdown’s first airing, featuring artists that performed during the Seventies.

People from other well known bands will produce their albums, cover their songs, sing back up vocals or play an instrument on a recording or even leave their original bands and become part of the group, or leave the group and go on to record their own music.  On today’s show, we explore just some of the connections that thread their way through the life of that iconic Seventies band, Fleetwood Mac.

We can work it out https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/09/02/1970s-covers-of-beatles-songs/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 06:05:44 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1108 This week we are revisiting the Sixties by way of the Seventies. A few weeks ago we looked at what the individual Beatles members got up to in the Seventies after they disbanded. On today’s show we explore how the music of the Beatles continued to reverberate through the Seventies by playing some of their most well known songs as covered by other artists. It really is hard to overstate the significance of the Beatles to modern music, and just how loved so many of their songs are.

Precious (not heavy) metals https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/08/27/songs-with-metal-in-the-title/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 00:38:40 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1104 On this week’s show we’re mining the archives for Seventies songs featuring some kind of metal in the title.  We’ve found rich seams of gold rings and hearts, and silver eyes and ladies, and some less flashy metals, like tin men and brass bands. But whether they are pure or alloy, all the tracks on today’s show are precious in their own way.

More songs with names https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/08/19/songs-with-names/ Mon, 19 Aug 2024 05:44:40 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1100 While undeniably most songs about people are simply written to a nameless ‘you’, ‘she’ or ‘he’, some songwriters seem to be inspired by particular individuals and want to name names. This week we return to a theme we haven’t visited in a while and bring together tracks from the Seventies featuring a person’s name in the title. Kiss apologises to Beth, Billy Paul yearns after Mrs Jones, ABBA encourages Helen, and Rick James expresses his love for Mary Jane, in just a few of our selection.

Simple! We do love an easy theme 🙂 But while the theme may be a bit trite the music is anything but. There’s some punk, some easy listening, some rock – we’ve got it all. So let’s fade to white….

We thought to do a ‘black and white’ show, in which all the songs had either black or white in the title, but there turned out to so many we decided to break it up into two shows. This first one features the black songs – Seventies tracks with black in the title. There’s leather, there’s water, there’s coffee, there’s paint. Turns out there are many black things that inspired songwriters from this era.

Each member of the Fab Four went on to release solo recordings in following decade, as well as produce records and write songs for other artists. On this week’s show we explore what happened after the biggest band in the world broke up.

Perhaps the quintessential instrument of the modern era. So popular that nearly everyone cans strum a few chords and whip one out round a campfire for a singalong, and so versatile that guitar is a central component of almost all modern musical genres. Yet only a few players have risen to the dizzy heights of guitar virtuoso, and many of these were wielding their instruments and thrilling us with compelling riffs and beguiling solos in rock bands of the Seventies. On this week’s show we highlight these guitar heroes and their talents. Long may they rock.

Taking a progressive turn https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/05/26/prog-rock-tracks/ Sun, 26 May 2024 11:54:18 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1050 Way back in the 1970s, not everyone was getting sweaty at a disco or grooving to soul music. No indeed, for some music lovers, nothing could be more transporting than settling in to the bean bag and poring over the latest fantastical triple-gatefold album cover while listening to some complex, lengthy, and conceptual progressive rock. Its critics often characterised prog rock as pretentious, pompous, and taking itself way too seriously, but for its fans, progressive rock has always had the power to exhilerate in a way other music cannot. On this weeks show, we explore some tracks from prog rock’s hey day in the early 1970s and find out just why the fans love this genre so much.

The only prescription is more cowbell https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/05/19/songs-featuring-the-cow-bell/ Sun, 19 May 2024 07:01:11 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1044 Today’s show is a tribute to the humble cowbell. So, uncelebrated and yet such an essential feature of rock, funk and latin music. It doesn’t play melody, being only one note, but it does add texture, syncopation and drive to any track. For as long as we’ve been human we’ve clapped our hands, stamped our feet and hit two sticks together to create a beat. The cow bell is the perfect beat keeper, resonant and loud enough to cut through amplified rock guitars and the noise of a full drumkit. Even today, along with all the other bits and pieces of expensive and elaborate kit in the studio or on the stage, the simple cow bell has pride of place.

Scales, fur and feathers https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/03/03/songs-with-animals-in-the-title/ Sun, 03 Mar 2024 03:59:22 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=1002 This week our show aired on World Wildlife Day, so we thought we would feature songs with some kind of animal in the title. Not all of the animals are wild and, to be honest, most of them are metaphors, but we think it’s been a great theme to highlight just some of the amazing music from the Seventies. We’ve got snakes, dogs, eagles, spiders and many more. Where would we be without animals? Not just facing extinction ourselves, but also without metaphorical songwriting richness. Perhaps not quite as important as saving the planet, but a good reason nevertheless to take action to support wildlife. Just imagine if we could never aspire to soar like an eagle?

Whistle while you work https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/02/25/songs-about-work-from-the-1970s/ Sun, 25 Feb 2024 09:46:20 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=999 Aaah work. We all have to do it at some stage in our lives.  Sometimes we love it, sometimes it’s a grind, but everybody has to pay the bills somehow. It takes up a huge part of our lives, so it only stands to reason that songwriters are going to have something to say about it. Sure enough, there are a few songs out there talking about finding work, doing work and leaving work. So if you are at work and able to put on the headphones or the speakers to keep you company while you hustle, we have the perfect playlist.

Get your boogie on https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/02/18/boogie-songs-from-the-1970s/ Sun, 18 Feb 2024 04:44:16 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=995 On this week’s show we’re getting down, we’re getting it on, we’re steaming up the dance floor, and we’re having a boogie. So if your toes are tapping and you just can’t stay in your seat, you can blame it on the boogie. Or maybe, you can blame it on JOY’s Saturday Breakfast Show, as they challenged us to fill a whole show with songs with boogie in the title. Easy! We could have filled a few. And maybe we will.  In the meantime, here’s just a taster of Seventies boogie fabulousness.

Gone but not forgotten https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/02/11/artists-we-lost-in-2023/ Sun, 11 Feb 2024 04:07:42 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=990 On this show we play tracks that were recorded and released around 50 years ago. It’s impressive that so many of the artists responsible for those tracks are still going strong, with plenty still touring and making music. But sadly its inevitable that as the years pass, more of these artists pass away. On today’s show we celebrate some of those that left us in 2023. They may be gone, but their wonderful music lives on.

Songs of 1974 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2024/01/21/songs-from-1974/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 03:00:35 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=982 It’s our first show for 2024 and, as has become tradition on Living in the 70s, we look back to songs released a half century ago in 1974. And what a great year for music this was! Funk was in its prime, bands were still exploring prog rock, and disco was just starting to emerge. So this week’s show presents a curated mix of classic numbers and little known gems, showcasing the brilliance of 1974.

Hallowed Halls https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/11/26/songs-from-inductees-to-the-hall-of-fame/ Sun, 26 Nov 2023 06:43:31 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=958 Every November,  a handful of luminaries whose musical careers have spanned more than 25 years are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Given the career length requirements, its no surprise that artists from the 1970s often feature, and this year is no exception, with Kate Bush, Chaka Khan, Willie Nelson and Bernie Taupin all inducted.  The process for nominations and inductions are not without controversy,  but while we might wonder why some artists get overlooked (you don’t have to look hard to notice an outrageous lack of women, for example) it’s hard to argue with the worthiness of those that do make the list. In honour of this annual event, all artists featured on todays show are hall of fame inductees

A Seventies banquet https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/10/22/songs-about-food/ Sun, 22 Oct 2023 03:00:52 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=939 As we have discovered here at Living in the 70s, songwriters love a metaphor. On this week’s show we explore songs from the Seventies featuring food, usually as a stand in for something else – so sex is a custard pie, life is a minestrone and love is as sweet as honey. But sometimes it’s actually food, and Harlem is completely out of greens, because the vegetable man is on strike. Either way, these songs feed our souls in the most delightful and nourishing way. So come enjoy our banquet!

Women represent! https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/10/15/tracks-from-female-artists/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 03:24:35 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=935 The Seventies featured some amazing female talent, but it could sometimes get lost in a sea of songs released by men. A 2017 study looking at the top 50 songs from every even numbered year between 1960 and 2008 found that out of the total of 1250 songs only 26% were performed by women, and 7.6% by mixed gender groups (ref). (Interestingly, the study also found that 57% of all songs used the word love,  and 22% of all songs included a sexual reference, typically via metaphor. No surprises there).

So to even the scales somewhat, every now and then here at Living in the 70s we like to dedicate an entire show to tracks released by female artists. Some of these artists made it big, some didn’t, but they were all fabulous.

In fact, if you search the JOY website for podcasts, you can find our show filed under the category of ‘elders’.  However, while the music from the 70s was made half a century ago (and add some years for your hosts), we think it remains as fresh as if it was made yesterday. Shake your body https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/09/24/disco-tracks-from-the-1970s/ Sun, 24 Sep 2023 05:53:00 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=925 Yes it’s another disco show! One of the most significant and perhaps influential musical genres to come out of the 1970s, disco forever democratised the dance floor. You didn’t need a partner to get your groove on. You didn’t need to be straight, white and following a man’s lead. You didn’t need to be doing certain steps at a particular time (though of course you could if you wished). You just needed to feel the beat and move your hips and get on out to the dance floor, baby. And many of the big disco hits of the day, still make us itch to dance, fifty years later.

It’s alive! https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/09/17/tracks-from-seventies-live-albums/ Sun, 17 Sep 2023 04:00:00 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=921 There’s something about seeing the music you love performed live. While studio albums may have more polish, there’s an anergy and immediacy at a live performance that just can’t be beat. While some bands and solo artists from the 1970s are still active, many have now retired, or passed away, or the band has broken up – it was half a century ago, after all – and getting to a show is impossible. Well, thank goodness so many of the great concerts from that time were recorded and released on live albums.  Live albums are time machines, they take us back to the electrifying atmosphere, the crowd, the groove, the sweaty realness of the performance. On this week’s show we play some of our favourite tracks from some of the great live albums from the 1970s.

It’s our 200th show! https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/08/27/music-from-the-1970s/ Sun, 27 Aug 2023 04:00:15 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=910 Yes, the little 70s show that could has been going for 200 shows! That’s a lot of music, and to commemorate the occasional, Marty and Venetia have scrolled through the whole play list from every show and picked some tracks that they have really enjoyed discovering or sharing with you over the last almost 4 years. Thank you so much for listening. Here’s to 200 more!

Let’s get married https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/08/20/songs-about-marriage/ Sun, 20 Aug 2023 04:53:08 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=901 This week, in honour of Marty’s nephew getting hitched, Living in the 70s is heading to the altar and playing tracks that have something to do with marriage. Not all the songs are happy, or romantic – turns out not all is fair in love or marriage – but they sure are fun.

Unfortunately, Venetia’s expensive microphone suddenly said “I don’t” halfway through the show, so some of the sound quality is less than stellar. Rest assured, she will be sourcing a new one before the next show.

Only young once https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/2023/08/13/only-young-once/ Sun, 13 Aug 2023 07:28:40 +0000 https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s/?p=898 This week it’s International Youth Day, so on today’s show we pay homage to some of our favourite Seventies artists who started their careers at a very young age. Some people just know, from the first moment they pick up a guitar, have their first solo in a choir or sit down at a piano, that making music is their life’s purpose. And some of those people are lucky enough to turn it into a brilliant career.
