Living in the 70s https://joy.org.au/livinginthe70s Were you born in the Seventies? Join us for the sounds of the 70s every Saturday morning. Martin and Venetia will take you to the decade of denim flares, burnt orange kitchen bench tops and the birth of disco and glam rock! Each week we’ll have a 70’s theme that we’ll explore, such as songs from disaster movies, movement anthems, one hit wonders, daggy duets, funky numbers, and disco tracks that steamed up the dance floor in many an LGBTI venue, to name just a few. The 70s produced some amazing music and we’re here to make sure that music is shared and never lost. NOTE: Due to music licencing requirements this podcast is unavailable outside of Australia. It’s almost All Hallow’s Eve and to mark the occasion this week Marty and Venetia have combed the catacombs (i.e. the internet and their own record collections) for appropriately spooky Seventies songs. Alice Cooper welcomes us to his nightmare, AC/DC ride a highway to hell and Cher sings a lovely murder ballad, to name but a few of this week’s offerings. Turns out the 70s was a scary, scary time…

Somewhere in the world it’s after 5 o’clock, the sun is over the yardarm and it’s time to mix a cheeky cocktail. Make ours a Negroni, please, because, as Marty has discovered, this week is Negroni week. In honour of that we have selected songs to do with drinks and drinking.  We start out cheerful enough, having a glass of champagne with Sailor, but it goes downhill pretty quickly, until we end up in a drunken piano bar with Tom Waits, down and out with Bobby Womack, nursing a shocking hangover with Kris Kristofferson before recovering with some elderberry wine with Elton John. Cheers!

It’s Spring. And with the sun, the sap is rising, the bees are buzzing and the birds are on the wing. Despite many of us being in lockdown we sense a sniff of hope and so this week Marty and Venetia have chosen songs from the 1970s that lift the spirits and celebrate the new growth that comes with this freshest of seasons. The Emotions bring us flowers, ELO brings us Blue Skies, Roxy Music’s thoughts turn to love, and Love Unlimited find Spring in their hearts. Aaaahhhh….

This week, in honour of Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones drummer who recently passed away, Marty and Venetia feature tracks from some great rock acts of the 1970s. Ranging from the more bluesy rock of the Stones, Free and The Guess Who to the harder edge of Kiss, Deep Purple and our very own Rose Tattoo. Even though his own jam was jazz, Charlie Watts was undeniably a crucial part of one of the best rock rhythm sections of all time. Vale

The Seventies was the decade of the super long song. While the 50s and 60s was spent honing the short, tight, radio friendly pop song, the 1970s saw bands exploring concept albums, concept tracks, more free form styles and longer story telling and in the process creating some  very long songs indeed. Often this necessitated the release of several versions of the same song – a cut down single version for radio and a longer album version. At the same time, punk came along with it’s short, sharp style, and shorter pop songs were still to be found. In this week’s show, Marty and Venetia explore both forms of perfection, playing some of their fave long and short songs from the 1970s.

June is Pride month, and this week on Living In the 70s we’re celebrating music made by LGBTQ artists. Not everyone was out in the 1970s, but it was the decade of androgyny, gay liberation, bra burning, glam rock and YMCA, and a time when us young sex and gender queer folk started to see ourselves reflected in music and popular culture in a variety of positive and empowering ways.

Every year on June 5 it’s World Environment Day. In honour of the occasion, this week Marty and Venetia play songs from the 1970s that are somehow related to the environment. Some represent an early call to arms in the fight to protect natural environments and others merely describe different kinds of environments, such as suburbia, a sunny day, or blue skies. It’s a pretty loose category, that really just provides us an opportunity to play some great music.  Here at Living In the 70s, however, we do recommend that you check out what’s happening on World Environment Day and get involved in the fight against climate change. After all, together we can be #generationrestoration

This week Marty and Venetia play tracks from classic albums from the 1970s. These albums have been around for almost 50 years and much like a fine wine, have only got better with age. Some of them were huge in their day and others have become appreciated more with the passing of time. All of them are brilliant.

This week, Marty and Venetia  take the opportunity to notice you, our lovely listeners, and say thank you and we love you. And the best way we know how to do that, of course, is by picking a theme. So we’re playing songs about you. Well, songs with the word you, or your in the title, to be precise. Second person singular is a very popular mode in song writing, so we had no shortage of material to choose from. We think we’ve found some beauties. We hope you enjoy

In honour of ANZAC day on April 25th, this week we feature music from Australia and New Zealand. Some really great music came from our little corner of the world in the 1970s, with a lot of movement and cross pollination across the ditch. Australia was perhaps gruntier, NZ was arguably more avant garde,  but together the Antipodes produced some brilliant artists  – some who rose briefly and faded back into obscurity and some who are still making great music 50 years later.

Hola! Kali mera! Come Stai? Bienvenue to our touch of foreign show, here at Living in the 70s. This week Marty and Venetia explore the incorporation of languages other than English into some of our favourite songs from the Seventies. Yusuf gets a little Greek, Santana adds some Latin flair and Ian Drury and the Blockheads hit us with some multilingual rhythm stick, and that’s only the beginning. Turns out the 1970s was a musical polyglot’s paradise and of course, we’re here to share…

The 1970s was an exciting time for Australian music – there was an explosion of talented artists, musical venues, national and international touring opportunities and the forging of what for many turned out to be long lasting careers in the industry. In large part this was due to the dynamism, enthusiasm and talent of Melbourne-born Michael Gudinski, who founded Mushroom Records in the early 70s and the Frontier touring company in the latter part of the decade. Gudinski fostered local talent, took risks on locals sounds and helped to create a thriving Australian music scene. He sadly passed away in early March. This week Marty and Venetia pay tribute and celebrate Gudinski’s important contribution, by focusing on artists signed to Mushroom Records throughout the Seventies.

This week Marty and Venetia explore songs from the 1970s with mother or mama in the title. Not necessarily songs for mothers, they just need to reference a mama. Some mamas boogie, some mothers don’t dance, and some mothers don’t know, and wouldn’t like it if they did! Whatever the mama, it all makes for a great mix of Seventies classics (but maybe not for mother’s day).

Hey all you Seventies lovers – it’s almost Valentines Day. So this week Marty and Venetia have selected a sample of songs from the 1970s with the word love in the title. They aren’t all love songs – in fact some are downright anti-love – but they all relate to that intense human emotion in one way or another. Peter Frampton loves your way, Queen are looking for somebody to love, and Chaka Khan just went through a bad break up and wants to tell us all about it, to name just a few of the love experiences we share with you this week. So whether you’re single, loved up or emotionally bruised, this Valentine’s Day we have you covered.

As we know, Marty is always in search of a good theme around which to organise our playlist. The Seventies was a big decade for music, after all, so it helps to have some guiding theme, however obscure. It so happens that February 2nd is World Wetlands Day. And while we couldn’t find any songs actually about wetlands, there are plenty of great 70s tracks that feature rain, rivers, tears and water of one sort or another. So welcome to our Wet show! This week we feature moisture in it’s many forms – Barbra takes a bath, CHIC makes you cry and Deep Purple watch some smoke on the water, to name a few.
Of course, none of these activities would be possible without a clean water supply, and here at Living in the 70s we support the preservation of healthy wetlands around the world. For more information on wetlands and how you can help to preserve them visit Wetlands Australia and the World Wetlands Day site.
