Wow – 300 shows. We often talk about how much we have learned about Seventies music since we started doing this show, and also how our musical tastes have gathered both breadth and depth. So to celebrate this milestone, we thought we would share some of the songs that we have discovered along the way that have now become firm favourites. If you have been on this journey with us since our first show, some of these choices may surprise you. I think they would have surprised us.

Lovey dovey

Aaaah love. It makes the world go round, no doubt, and has been the inspiration for songwriters since songwriting first began. Sadly, many of the resulting ditties are less than memorable. Some love songs, however, truly do stand the test of time and are destined to be sung plaintively into a damp pillow, danced to joyfully at weddings or shyly shared in a DM. Tracks we might have missed

In the Seventies, not all great tracks were released as singles. So if you didn’t buy or borrow a band’s albums, there would be a lot of material that you might never get to hear. On this show, we can sometimes be guilty of playing an artists best known songs – usually single releases – and skipping over plenty of other great tracks. So we thought we would fix this and showcase some lesser known tracks that could only be found deep in the albums. We think we’ve found some bangers.

Going up the country

On Sunday this week it was World Rural Development Day. So of course on today’s show we are playing tracks about living in or being in the country. There’s nothing quite like feeling the fresh air in your lungs, hearing the birds calling and seeing the leaves of the tress rustling in a breeze. Many songwriters in the Seventies felt the same and waxed lyrical about the charms of country life. Or, couldn’t wait to leave it to head to the big smoke. Some aspects could do with developing, after all.

We give little bits of metal and paper and plastic a made up value and then slave all of our lives to make sure we have enough of it. No wonder we also write songs about it. Here’s hoping that your books are balancing this week and your stocktakes are coming out even.

This week we are revisiting a previous theme and playing more Seventies covers of Seventies songs. It wasn’t unusual in that decade for a few different artists to release the same songs not very far apart. Sometimes the same song could be a hit for different artists, but occasionally a song that languished in relative obscurity would be reinterpreted a made into a hit by somebody new. That’s the beauty of music – so many possible ways of creating magic.

Vanda and Young

On this weeks show, we pay tribute to a great Australian musical partnership, performing, songwriting and producing duo Harry Vanda and George Young.

Vanda and Young met at an immigrant hostel in NSW when they were teenagers and went on to be part of the internationally successful band the Easybeats, writing all of the Easybeats’ later songs including the hit Friday on My Mind. Towards the end of the band’s career, they started producing and they went on to become in house producers for the Albert Productions record label in the early 1970s. During that decade they contributed, as producers and/or songwriters, to about 20% of the music on the Australian charts, including tracks by Stevie Wright, Ted Mulry, John Paul Young and ACDC. In the late Seventies they returned to working on their own music, forming the band Flash and the Pan. Australian music would not have been the same without this powerhouse partnership.

Focus on Europe

As Marty is currently cohosting all the way from Malta, and the Eurovision song contest is in full swing, we thought that on this week’s show we would focus on European artists from the Seventies. Some of these songs were well known here in Australia, others may have been a little more niche, but all of them are by artists who were very successful in their own countries of origin. It’s a different kind of flavour this week. A little sweeter in general, a little more poppy, but altogether it’s a tasty smorgasbord of European treats.

It’s almost the end of the year. And as has become tradition on our show, at this time of year we look back to the songs that made it to the top of the charts 50 years ago. This year, that means the tracks we play on this weeks show are all number one hits from 1974. Not all of them were number one in America, or on the pop charts – they may have been number one in Australia, or the UK, or on the R&B charts. But they all made it to the top of the list on some chart, somewhere in the world.

Vale Quincy Jones

On the third of November this year, Quincy Jones passed away at the age of 91 after a 70 year career in music. Acclaimed producer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist and film scorer, Jones produced and/or contributed to some of the biggest hits of the 1970s and helped shape the raw talent of some of that decades brightest stars, including Michael Jackson, Patti Austen and Chaka Khan. On this weeks show we pay tribute to the jazzy, funky, soulful musical genius that was Quincy Jones.

Happy birthday JOY

This week the show went to air on December 1, which happens to be both World AIDS Day and JOY’s 31st birthday. Arising from a desire by JOY’s founder, John Oliver to bring community and comfort to HIV positive gay men isolated in hospital during the AIDS crisis, JOY first went to air on World AIDS Day in 1993. 31 years later, Australia’s first LGBTIQ radio station is still going strong.

JOY has a commitment to strongly feature LGBTIQA+ musical content across its programming. For niche shows like ours, it can be hard to do this every single show – a lot of artists in the 1970s were not as open about their sexuality and/or gender as they might have been today and there also may not be a lot of information about the personal lives of every band member, producer, song writer or session musician that never became a huge star. Nevertheless, every now and then we like to dedicate a whole show to featuring artists who we know for certain were part of our rainbow community. It seemed appropriate to do so this week. Happy birthday JOY – may we see many more.

Soulful sounds

Soul – one of the great musical genres to come out of mid 20th Century America, and a sound that still reverberates through pop music today. Sharing it’s gospel roots with jazz, funk, blues and even rock, soul can be a hard genre to draw a neat boundary around, but it’s one of those things that you know it when you hear it. Tending to favour virtuoso vocals, horns, rhythm sections at the forefront and a passionate feel, soul was the secular sibling to gospel and originally exclusively performed by African American artists. But many white artists from around the globe who grew up loving soul, started incorporating a soul feel into their sound. This week’s show explores just a few of these soul influenced tracks.

Countdown Anniversary

Fifty years ago, on November 8, 1974, the first episode of Countdown went to air on the ABC. It would go on to have many Australians glued to their TVs for an hour a week, getting their dose of Australian and international pop music news, performances and interviews for the next 13 years. The impact of Countdown on Australian music culture cannot be overstated. It was an institution, a cultural phenomenon, and it helped to shape the musical landscape of a whole generation – a generation which included the hosts of this show. This week’s show celebrates the 50 year anniversary of Countdown’s first airing, featuring artists that performed during the Seventies.

Way back in the 1970s, not everyone was getting sweaty at a disco or grooving to soul music. No indeed, for some music lovers, nothing could be more transporting than settling in to the bean bag and poring over the latest fantastical triple-gatefold album cover while listening to some complex, lengthy, and conceptual progressive rock. Its critics often characterised prog rock as pretentious, pompous, and taking itself way too seriously, but for its fans, progressive rock has always had the power to exhilerate in a way other music cannot. On this weeks show, we explore some tracks from prog rock’s hey day in the early 1970s and find out just why the fans love this genre so much.

Today’s show is a tribute to the humble cowbell. So, uncelebrated and yet such an essential feature of rock, funk and latin music. It doesn’t play melody, being only one note, but it does add texture, syncopation and drive to any track. For as long as we’ve been human we’ve clapped our hands, stamped our feet and hit two sticks together to create a beat. The cow bell is the perfect beat keeper, resonant and loud enough to cut through amplified rock guitars and the noise of a full drumkit. Even today, along with all the other bits and pieces of expensive and elaborate kit in the studio or on the stage, the simple cow bell has pride of place.

This week our show aired on World Wildlife Day, so we thought we would feature songs with some kind of animal in the title. Not all of the animals are wild and, to be honest, most of them are metaphors, but we think it’s been a great theme to highlight just some of the amazing music from the Seventies. We’ve got snakes, dogs, eagles, spiders and many more. Where would we be without animals? Not just facing extinction ourselves, but also without metaphorical songwriting richness. Perhaps not quite as important as saving the planet, but a good reason nevertheless to take action to support wildlife. Just imagine if we could never aspire to soar like an eagle?

Hallowed Halls

Every November, a handful of luminaries whose musical careers have spanned more than 25 years are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Given the career length requirements, its no surprise that artists from the 1970s often feature, and this year is no exception, with Kate Bush, Chaka Khan, Willie Nelson and Bernie Taupin all inducted. The process for nominations and inductions are not without controversy, but while we might wonder why some artists get overlooked (you don’t have to look hard to notice an outrageous lack of women, for example) it’s hard to argue with the worthiness of those that do make the list. In honour of this annual event, all artists featured on todays show are hall of fame inductees

A Seventies banquet

As we have discovered here at Living in the 70s, songwriters love a metaphor. On this week’s show we explore songs from the Seventies featuring food, usually as a stand in for something else – so sex is a custard pie, life is a minestrone and love is as sweet as honey. But sometimes it’s actually food, and Harlem is completely out of greens, because the vegetable man is on strike. Either way, these songs feed our souls in the most delightful and nourishing way. Women represent!

The Seventies featured some amazing female talent, but it could sometimes get lost in a sea of songs released by men. A 2017 study looking at the top 50 songs from every even numbered year between 1960 and 2008 found that out of the total of 1250 songs only 26% were performed by women, and 7.6% by mixed gender groups (ref). (Interestingly, the study also found that 57% of all songs used the word love, and 22% of all songs included a sexual reference, typically via metaphor. No surprises there).

So to even the scales somewhat, every now and then here at Living in the 70s we like to dedicate an entire show to tracks released by female artists. Some of these artists made it big, some didn’t, but they were all fabulous.

Yes it’s another disco show! One of the most significant and perhaps influential musical genres to come out of the 1970s, disco forever democratised the dance floor. You didn’t need a partner to get your groove on. You didn’t need to be straight, white and following a man’s lead. You didn’t need to be doing certain steps at a particular time (though of course you could if you wished). You just needed to feel the beat and move your hips and get on out to the dance floor, baby. And many of the big disco hits of the day, still make us itch to dance, fifty years later.

There’s something about seeing the music you love performed live. While studio albums may have more polish, there’s an anergy and immediacy at a live performance that just can’t be beat. While some bands and solo artists from the 1970s are still active, many have now retired, or passed away, or the band has broken up – it was half a century ago, after all – and getting to a show is impossible. Well, thank goodness so many of the great concerts from that time were recorded and released on live albums. Live albums are time machines, they take us back to the electrifying atmosphere, the crowd, the groove, the sweaty realness of the performance. This week, in honour of Marty’s nephew getting hitched, Living in the 70s is heading to the altar and playing tracks that have something to do with marriage. Not all the songs are happy, or romantic – turns out not all is fair in love or marriage – but they sure are fun.

Unfortunately, Venetia’s expensive microphone suddenly said “I don’t” halfway through the show, so some of the sound quality is less than stellar. Rest assured, she will be sourcing a new one before the next show.
