Volunteer Roles Now Open For Local Roots

If you live and breathe new independent Aussie music, then we want you on our team!

Local Roots airs Wednesday nights on Australia’s only LGBTQI+ radio station JOY 94.9. In 2019 the team embarked on exciting changes resulting in some huge successes, featuring over 500 independent Aussie musicians consisting of over 100 LGBTQI+ identifying artists.

We are a team who dreams big and 2020 is going to be even bigger! We want you to come along for the ride.

Role – Producer, New Music

The Role:

Local Roots is a radio show is broken up into 2 parts – Local Roots & Jam Sessions. This role will be producing the New Music part of the show that premieres new tracks each week.

You’ll work closely with the executive producer in curating a weekly playlist of the best in new music released within the last 4-6 weeks, as well as organising and confirming interviews and guests coming into the station. You need to have a good ear for the best new tracks and a genuine love of all things new and emerging in the local music scene.

You will manage and work closely with a team of presenters ensuring they are prepared prior to each show. Tasks associated with this include:

  • Creating on-air copy & interview scripts and questions with presenters.
  • General administrative work associated with the role
  • Ensuring the show goes to air and to time, including panelling.
  • Managing a team of diversity segments for each show.
  • Attend events representing Local Roots & JOY 94.9
  • Other administrative duties as required

Note this is not an on-air presenter role, but you will have the opportunity to fill in when required.

  • Additional training in radio presenting is available via the JOY training course. Fees are applicable for this.

The non-negotiables:

  • You’ll need to be a financial member of JOY 94.9 and become a registered volunteer once accepted to join the team
  • Minimum commitment of 6 months – this is a volunteer role and we want you to be able to stick it out!
  • You’ll need to make it along to our monthly team meetings – team dynamic is important.

Role – Social Media Coordinator

The Role:

Our online presence is key to building and engaging with our audience. We need someone who has experience in all social media platforms to create engaging content from our weekly radio show, as well as build momentum each week to ensure new listeners are tuning in.

Tasks associated with this include:

  • Working closely with the Executive Producer to build the Local Roots brand
  • Scheduling and creating engaging content across all social media platforms
  • Editing and uploading podcasts of each interview
  • Attend events representing Local Roots & JOY 94.9
  • Other administrative tasks as required

You will need to be someone who has experience with design and a bit of a creative flair!

Note this is not an on-air presenter role, and you will not have the opportunity to be on-air.
