Producing music with a strong political and spiritual message, Daniel Elia encapsulates the trials and tribulations faced by the Melbourne South-Sudanese community, and what it means to be black in Australia. With an extensive background in dancing and touring, Elia was inspired by watching his favourite artists perform. At age 19, he began writing lyrics and recording his tracks on his laptop. It became apparent that his natural creativity and emotional intelligence was able to thrive through the creation of music.

Elia captivates his listeners with lyrical poetry and unique instrumentals. The recognition of his talent provided him with opportunities to perform at St Kilda festival 2019, Thando’s Ep launch (part of Brunswick Music festival) 2019 and Groovin The Moo 2019. Daniel Elia spoke with VICE magazine about his conscious lyrics in collaboration with Hennessy. “Daniel Elia is at the vanguard of conscious rap in Australia, embedding a message of positivity, community, and truth through the heart of his tracks. Taking inspiration from the likes of Kendrick Lamar and J Cole, Elia is embracing the power of their socially conscious style but applying it to real Australian stories”. – VICE magazine.

After writing her first song at age 11, it was clear that Elle Graham was going to make a career in music. Growing up in tropical North Queensland, Graham used her upbringing as inspiration; pairing it with training garnered at the Victorian College of the Arts to launch her solo project WOODES.

Elle released her debut Woodes EP in 2016 and it immediately made an impact, debuting in the top 20 iTunes charts in 7 countries including going #1 on the Singapore Alternative Album charts and named ‘best female artist 2016’ by influential US blog Indie Shuffle.

In 2017 Woodes signed as a songwriter with UMPG worldwide, as well as securing an invite to SXSW, where she was named by The AU Review as the ‘Best Australian Solo Artist’ of the conference.

Upon release of her second EP ‘Golden Hour’ in early 2018, Woodes became an in-demand live act; supporting international heavyweights Asgier, BØRNS and Sylvan Esso, as well as crossing the country twice for her headline performances. The EP’s opener ‘Hunger’ was also handpicked by Netflix as the official trailer music for their debut Australian series Tidelands.

2018 also saw Woodes perform at Splendour In The Grass, where she debuted her most recent single ‘Change My Mind,’ written at Auckland Song Hubs only 8 weeks prior. The single went on to feature in 15 countries New Music Friday playlists including The UK. Change My Mind was Woodes 5th single added to high rotation on triple j.
Graham has also been a much sought-after feature songwriter and vocalist, recently collaborating with influential artists such as Cosmo’s Midnight, Golden Vessel, Feki, and Set Mo. Her song ‘I Belong Here’ with the latter achieved ARIA Gold status.

Val Flynn, a born performer and refreshing new voice in the Australian music. With foundations laid in fashion and styling, Val Flynn’s passion for music was ignited during a late-night studio session with good friend Miss Blanks, ‚”She pretty much pushed me into the booth and said bitch sing you got a voice! Use it!‚”. Reminiscent of early 2000’s hip-hop futuristic sounds, Val Flynn draws inspiration from Aayliah, Christina Aguilera, and George Michael. Exploring themes of love, sex, and individuality, Val Flynn has global ambitions to resonate with the heart beats that skip to their own sound.

On ‚Werq 4 It‚ Flynn has enlisted Miss Blanks, creating an infectious combination of boss energies and unforgiving charisma. Flynn sings masterfully in and out of autotune, chopped over a high energy jungle infused garage beat.

Tender Buttons are a 4-piece alternative dream-pop band from Footscray, Melbourne, bringing together dream-pop, shoegaze, and indie-pop influences.

In 2016, Tender Buttons was born out of a collaboration between Jessicca Bennett (Love Shack Studios, Lash, Preytells), Rachel Sztanski (Reii) and Andrew Kluchareff (Lunars) on the dreamy surf-pop single ‘Southern Hemisphere.’

Following it’s positive reception and airplay on community radio, the trio commenced work on their forthcoming collaborative and self-produced E.P.

The tracks were sent to be mixed by Aden Senycia (Nicholas Allbook, Peter Bibby, Rabbit Island, Pikelet), who has since joined the band on bass guitar.

Maxon is currently shaking audiences with her trademark vocal and boundless song-writing talents. A gifted and versatile artist, Maxon burst onto the Melbourne music scene in 2016 with her own brand of raw, emotionally-driven pop songs and a dynamic vocal range that earned her comparisons to the likes of Adele, Meg Mac and even one of her biggest inspirations, Alanis Morissette.

With unstoppable strength and a callousness toward burning bridges if need be, Maxon’s writing is stylistic of a diary entry; clandestine and forthright. Such confessional writing is bound to a vulnerable stage presence and a voice soaked in command, as Maxon’s audiences witness the tale of the gifted singer and her battle through the trials and tribulations of love and its conditions.

A Local Roots Jam Sesh is where a local independent artist stops by the studio to play 4 tracks live to air, along with a nice long chat about their music.

Nancie is no newcomer to the stage, having spent the last six years tirelessly working her way around the local music scene, cutting her teeth playing pub gigs whilst too young to buy a drink at the bar. Swapping an acoustic for a telecaster and full band, the hard work is paying off for Schipper, who showcased at BIGSOUND in 2019 to packed rooms and scored a slot opening for Alex Lahey on her regional tour this October/November. The last year has seen her support Ball Park Music, Tia Gostelow, Rat!Hammock and perform at St Kilda Festival and Queenscliff Music Festival.

Nancie played 2 brand new tracks not yet released – which we found out she is recording this week!

Each week a local independent artist stops by the Local Roots studio to perform a set of 4 tracks live to air for you. Nothing is off limits and we go deep into finding out who they are and why they chose to release music. They’re artists we love and think you’re going to fall in love with too.

Louise Terra’s fascination with electronic music is in the liminal, the beautiful and weird stuff created between genres. Using the computer as her instrument, Louise Terra single-handedly crafts deliriously hooky songs from layers of vocals, pounding rhythms, and atmospheres of sounds and synthesizers. As gorgeous as they are unsettling, Louise Terra’s style of electronic dream-pop comes from a rich set of influences, yet all of her songs pulse with a similar emotional force. Her songwriting expresses her outre perspective on human nature and her somewhat futuristic take on the existential conundrums of living in such uncertain times.

Hailing from Colac, in Victoria’s West, The Attics craft their own brand of high-contrast indie. Jangly guitars, ear worming bass hooks and percussive layers melt into a heady blend of dream-pop and soaring psych-rock.
Born as a stream of pop music Cameron Wade crafted from his bedroom, The Attics came to life as a plush four-piece band experience inspired by the likes of Japanese Breakfast, Pond and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
In 2016, the young band found their feet via the release of two glimmering singles ‘Not Like’ and ‘Bluffing’ – the heart of the tracks carried the sugary remnants of Cam’s earlier DIY work. Ever since then they’ve been producing tracks we’ve fallen in love with, and the guys stopped by the Local Roots studio for a live Jam Sesh!

No/Trauma is a band made... LEARN MORE No/Trauma is a band made up of three queer people making emo folk music. Singing about vulnerability, connection and identity. It’s a bit like Paul Kelly meets Kelly Clarkson, but sadder and queerer.
Their new track Six Foot Flawless is a three minute thirty second anthemic burst of self love about growing up, being queer as in “f**k you” and learning to love yourself with a little bit of inspiration from the Greek Amazons of legend.
Elisabeth clarified what roley poley meant by them in their track, with Jason noting he totally misunderstood.

LEARN MORE Gosh have wasted no time in creating a cult-like following for themselves. Dynamic, melodic, emotional – yet still cool, the band follow in the footsteps of Indie rockers gone before, and allude to a very promising future for the genre. We’re vowing fro Lady Gaga to be their next suggestion as support act.
Say Another Thing was the first time where the band has tried to say something through their music, trying to look at the world as a whole and trying to take the world in a slightly different direction.
Take a listen to the chat and check them out at their upcoming shows.

Angie stopped by the Local Roots studio to perform 4 tracks live for you, and this one is a special one for us.
We’ve been following Angie since she let us know how much she despises eating fried chicken at 4am or kissing under flashing signs. Her voice captures your attention from the moment you begin listening and keeps you locked in wanting more.
These last 24 months have been huge for Angie, winning multiple awards and playing a string of sold-out international and local headline shows. Her first track slow mover reached gold status here in Aus!
Have a listen as we chat with Angie about her music, travels and a bit of good banter along the way!

LEARN MORE Each week we bring in an independent artist to perform and share their music live in the studio just for you.
A Melbourne based singer/songwriter with an affinity for story-telling, Ernest has been song-writing, performing for events and weddings, playing at festivals, played solo and with bands, in big venues and small, from Federation Square to street corners.  He has supported such luminaries as Deborah Conway, Tex Perkins and Ross Wilson.  He has been on the bill at festivals including Folk Rhythm and Life, St. Kilda Festival, Westernport Festival and Apollo Bay Festival.  He took out first place in the Apollo Bay Young Songwriter Competition, in the top four finalist in the International Songwriting Competition and a finalist in the Melbourne Songwriting Competition.
Ernest paints a vivid tapestry with his deep understanding of refined lyricism, with influences that roam various folk styles. His finger-picking style and soothing voice engage the audience in his melodies, understated yet complex. Eaglemont has crafted an insatiable brand of pop rock that delivers hooky guitar lines with emotionally intelligent and introspective lyricism. Eaglemont invites listeners into her corner of the world relating to audiences through stories of love, friendship and identity.
Beginning her musical career at age 5, Eaglemont was trained classically in violin before moving onto acoustic guitar inspired by artists, Missy Higgins and City and Colour. Early songs, ‘Texas’ and ‘Swept Away’ feature an acoustic sound whereas Eaglemont’s newer releases feature the fuzz of an electric guitar. Translating her classical violinist teachings to self-taught acoustic guitar, Eaglemont began penning songs in the hopes of articulating the unique challenges of growing up and constantly relocating. “Make Sure You Get Home” is about checking in on all your friends and not letting them deal with things alone. “A friend had asked me to send her a text when I got home safe and it got me thinking about how powerful friendship has been in my life and how much I value it. We all want our friends to succeed and would do anything to help them, so it can be hard to watch them go through hard times.”

Each week we bring in an independent artist to perform and share their music live in the studio just for you.
Although the name may suggest otherwise, Monnone Alone are a bona fide pop group based around the sagacious songwriting of Mark Monnone (ex-Lucksmiths) and featuring members of A-grade pop tinkerers Architecture in Helsinki, Mid-State Orange and Aleks & the Ramps. That’s almost as bona fide as it gets.

Having toured the US and Europe with a rotating line-up on the back of first album 20
13’s Together at Last (which was recorded in Brooklyn’s Marlborough Farms studio and featured performances by members of The Ladybug Transistor, The Clean, The Aislers Set, Crystal Stilts and Love is All), Mark Monnone eventually got to work back home solidifying the group’s line-up with some of his favourite local players: Joe Foley on bass, Louis Richter on guitar and Gus Franklin returning to the throne having played drums on (and co-produced) the first album.
Mark, Gus & Joe joined the Local Roots crew to chat about the recently released album and upcoming show in Melbourne.

Melbourne singer/songwriter Max Lawrence specialises in intimate, soulful songs that span alt-pop, indie electronic and ambient folk. With a rich lower range and a soaring falsetto, Max sings about opening up to the beauty of nature, our inner selves and to each other through majestic choruses and dynamic live performance.
His songs also explore darker subject matter complemented with skin-crawling textures, haunting melodies and driving beats, akin to that of Perfume Genius, or Moses Sumney; but with the avant pop sensibility of Lorde and Bjork.
His debut EP “CHLOROPHYLL”, produced by GOLDNOIR is out now, with much more music on its way.
It’s time to settle back and get in for a Jam Session you won’t forget!

Each week we bring in an independent artist to perform and share their music... LEARN MORE Each week we bring in an independent artist to perform and share their music live in the studio just for you.
Australian songwriter Laura Imbruglia has been releasing records since the early noughties. A restless musician with broad music taste, she’s released three albums, played almost every corner of Australia and several pockets of Europe. Although Laura has been quiet on the music front for the past 5 years (momentarily distracted by the creation of her beloved arts web series “Amateur Hour”), she’s finally back in the land of music.
Following from 2013’s What A Treat and breaking a five-year radio silence, Scared of You delves deep into the mind and listening habits of Laura’s past few years, traversing realms of pub rock, brooding indie pop, classic country, shoegaze, grunge and even yacht rock. With such a broad stylistic scope, exemplified through the album’s three stand alone singles ‘Tricks’, ‘Diptych’,“The Creeps’ and now ‘Carry You Around’, Imbruglia has earned her stripes as one of Melbourne’s most exciting artists of today.
Beneath the gritty, shiny surface, Scared of You sees Laura at her most openly vulnerable yet. Produced by long-time collaborator Nick Huggins, the album gives insight into the joys, frustrations, trials, and tribulations of human interaction.
Tracks like ‘Give Boys Pink Toys’ and ‘You’re Shit’ push the album into politically charged heavy hitting territory, whilst subdued moments such as ‘Diptych’, ‘CBT’ and ‘Casual’ remain deeply grounded in self-reflection, and relationship mending. It’s 30 minutes of danceable, punchable, huggable catharsis that showcases the refined songwriting and chameleon like musicianship of an artist at the peak of a massive career.
“The album focuses on the constant shift between insecurity, comfort, confusion and restlessness that occurs in all corners of life, and investigates and unpacks human fallibility. It wasn’t all that fun to write these songs but it sure is fun to play them!” – Laura Imbruglia
Featuring a recently revitalised band lineup of Alex MacRae (Sons of Rico) on lead guitar, Kelly Dingeldei (Loobs) on bass & backing vocals, and James Trewenack (Glass Diamonds) on drums, Laura Imbruglia and her band have been garnering new and returning fans with an utterly impressive live show. The outfit supported Teenage Fanclub and The Saboteurs for sold out shows earlier this year, played to a huge crowd at Boogie Festival, and followed that with a massive national tour.

Val Flynn is a born performer and refreshing new voice in the Australian music. With foundations... LEARN MORE Val Flynn is a born performer and refreshing new voice in the Australian music. With foundations laid in fashion and styling, Val Flynn’s passion for music was ignited during a late-night studio session with good friend Miss Blanks, ‚ÄúShe pretty much pushed me into the booth and said bitch sing you got a voice! Use it!‚ Reminiscent of early 2000′ hip-hop futuristic sounds, Val Flynn draws inspiration from Aayliah, Christina Aguilera, and George Michael. Exploring themes of love, sex, and individuality, Val Flynn has global ambitions to resonate with the heart beats that skip to their own sound.
On ‘Werq 4 It’ Flynn has enlisted Miss Blanks, creating an infectious combination of boss energies and unforgiving charisma. Flynn sings masterfully in and out of autotune, chopped over a high energy jungle infused garage beat. Flynn describes ’Werq 4 It’ as an anthem for women and young girls who “can do and achieve anything in this world and don’t need a man to make it happen”. Paired with Miss Blanks’ clever and commanding wordplay, ‘Werq 4 It’ positions Flynn amongst Australia’s dance-pop elite.

Each week we bring an artist into the studio to delve deeper into everything... LEARN MORE Each week we bring an artist into the studio to delve deeper into everything about them, and get them to perform a few tracks live-to-air for you. It’s like a live concert in your car, bathroom or really anywhere you listen to the radio!
Approachable Members of Your Local Community make music that’s a gently heaving wave of team spirit and pop melodies; funny but not a joke, approachable but not simple, and generously glazed in extra servings of groove and charisma. Reliably funky and devilishly handsome in their matching Adidas, these nebbish boys from the more-recently-clean streets of St Kilda who make up the Approachable Members deliver a service the community knows and loves.
If you like getting a little bit drunk with your Grandma at Shabbat dinner, matching your outfit to your best friends, and deeply funky grooves, you might be a great addition to the team. Whatever you come for, Approachable Members Of Your Local Community just want to make you feel at home, and share their little slice of suburban paradise with you.

2018 was an undeniably huge year for Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt. The brain behind transfixing nom de guerre Merpire, Rhiannon has quickly grown from nascent head-turner to powerful frontrunner of the local indie-pop scene.
Nestling into her new Melbourne home, the past 12 months have seen Merpire release her debut EP Endless Chatter and play a slew of noteworthy live shows including a sold-out EP launch at The Gasometer Hotel. She has supported the likes of Angie McMahon, Olympia, Phantastic Ferniture, Oh Pep! and more, and recently played her biggest run of shows to date supporting Didirri on his National ‘Measurements’ Tour.
Merpire stopped by the Local Roots studio for our first ever Jam Session.
Time to get cosy, grab a tea and enjoy the amazing vocals of this very talented artist.

We... LEARN MORE We interviewed ELKI on Local Roots and played her new track ‘Nightmare’, a playful song of underwater romantic disaster that arrived in the songwriter’s sleep.
It’s a textured, percussive song, with vocal harmonies threading in and out of the march of the beats, hand claps, and mouth pops. It’s rich and full and features layer upon layer of vocal parts to produce a brand of pop that snaps your attention straight into focus.
“I wrote a large chunk of ‘Nightmare’ in my sleep and woke up with the opening verse fully formed.” She explains further that writing comes out of daydreaming and switching off the phone, getting into a subconscious state and tuning out. I think that’s where ‘Nightmare’ came from – my brain looking for a way to express all those pent up ideas. If I haven’t been tweaking a melody, scribbling a lyric, or re-recording a demo, I feel like it’s a day wasted. That’s why I’m a firm believer in turning the technology off and doing your own thing.”

LEARN MORE The project started with a single song and from there slowly grew into much more,  fuelled by a strong creative chemistry and respect for each other. The resulting work explores themes of loss, regret, growth, humility and courage. It inhabits a lush sonic landscape that sways between intimate pianos, yearning guitars, and driving electronics, while capturing the process of four different voices rolling into one.
We spoke with Dustin Tebbutt about the new project, his own music and about the upcoming tour.
