Preceded by the single “Primary”, the album was a commercial success in the UK, peaking at number 14 and staying in the albums chart for 8 weeks. It was mostly well received.

Faith saw the Cure continuing in the gloomy vein of 1980’s Seventeen Seconds, which would conclude with the band’s next album, Pornography.  Much of Faith was written in the studio. At least two songs on the album, “All Cats Are Grey” and “The Drowning Man”, were inspired by the Gormenghast novels of Mervyn Peake. Faith was the first album by the Cure to feature six-string bass guitar; “All Cats Are Grey” features Smith on keyboards and piano, with no guitar at all. The front cover, designed by former and future member Porl Thompson, is a picture of Bolton Priory in the village of Bolton Abbey in the fog.

The instrumental piece “Carnage Visors” (an antonym for rose-coloured spectacles; originally available only on the long-play cassette release) is the soundtrack to Carnage Visors, a short film by Ric Gallup, Simon Gallup’s brother, that was screened at the beginning of shows in place of a support band on the 1981 Picture Tour, and featured animation of several dolls in different positions and stances. The film has since disappeared, and only Smith, Lol Tolhurst and Simon Gallup own copies of it, though during a televised interview in the mid-1980s, the host of the program surprised the band by playing a clip of the film on set.

EVOL https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2018/04/13/evol/ Thu, 12 Apr 2018 23:40:37 +0000 http://joy.org.au/magicportals/?p=590 https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2018/04/13/evol/#respond https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2018/04/13/evol/feed/ 0 <3 This week on Magic Portals we listen to EVOL by Sonic Youth (it’s one of my favourite albums). EVOL is the third studio album by the American alternative rock band Sonic Youth. It was released in May 1986 by SST Records, the band’s first release on the label. The album is notable for being the first with a new drummer, Steve Shelley, replacing Bob Bert. This is an incredible album in terms of the guitar playing. It’s on point and this album doesn’t disappoint, if your in the mood to listen to some punk rock songs then give this a listen <3

Despite not being successful at the time, the album has received retrospective praise. Pitchfork said that EVOL ” was where the seeds of greatness were sown”, and placed the album 31st on their Top 100 Albums of the 1980s list, alongside Sonic Youth’s next two albums, Sister and Daydream Nation, which ranked 14th and first, respectively.

The album cover features a picture of model/actress Lung Leg, a still taken from Submit to Me. Leg had previously appeared in the “Death Valley ’69” music video. The back cover shows a black-and-white picture of the band in a heart-shaped frame. The album’s 10 songs are listed in a different order than the actual track listing. The members’ names are listed on the back cover as well, although no instruments are assigned for them. It reads “guitars, vocals, drums”, with “bass” hidden beneath the photograph of the band. The insert features the lyrics to the songs and the A-side depicts Thurston Moore, with eyes drawn on his hands, holding them up to his face. This photograph was later used for the cover of the “Starpower” single. The other side contains pictures from horror movies Friday the 13th Part 2 and Children of the Corn, with a blacked-out image of two ladies in the upper right corner.

Produced by Gary Smith and engineered by Paul Kolderie, it was recorded at Fort Apache Studios in Cambridge, MA. The album was released in 1988 internationally on the 4AD label, except in the United States, where it was released by Sire Records. Sire used a different album cover for its release, as the label was putting a strong promotional push behind the band, and label executives favoured a picture of the band over the collage featured on the 4AD release.

The 4AD CD release also features six of the seven tracks from the band’s 1987 EP The Fat Skier. (The seventh track was not deemed essential for CD release, as it was a re-issue of “Soul Soldier” from the band’s debut album, followed by an ambient field recording of the band talking in a park.) The Sire release did not feature these six songs, and therefore these songs have never been released on CD in the USA.

The album was recorded at Southern Studios in London between October 1984 and October 1985 and was produced by Penny Rimbaud of Crass and engineered by Mel Jefferson. The album was more complex in comparison to its predecessor The Eye, with greater use of electronic noise and distorted samples and keyboards.

Again this is an incredible album by the iconic band who express themselves in an experimental way, even though the album has heavy punk rock roots it delves much further than your typical punk record, it is by all sense of the word unique <3

It was released in September 1984 by Crass Records. The album peaked at No. 6 in the UK Independent Albums Chart. The Eye was recorded at Southern Studios in January 1984. It was produced by Crass member Penny Rimbaud and engineered by Tony Cook. The cover art was designed by Dada Nana. It was named after Björk’s favourite book, Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille (1928), an intense story about a young French couple involved in sexual perversions and violent behaviours. The album included “Dismembered”, a new version of the band’s first single, “Söngull” (1983), with most of the guitars replaced by pipes and bells. We also hear from songs off their second album Holidays In Europe.

Azealia Banks (born May 31, 1991) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actress. Raised in the Harlem neighbourhood of New York City, Banks began releasing music through Myspace in 2008, eventually being signed to XL Recordings at age 17. After releasing her debut single “212”, she secured a recording contract with Interscope and Polydor Records, and later released her first extended play 1991 (2012). Banks’ debut studio album, Broke with Expensive Taste, experienced several delays since its initial announcement before being released in 2014. In 2016, she released the mixtape Slay-Z. Her second studio album is Fantasea II: The Second Wave. Banks’ outspoken views and controversial social media presence have been the subject of media attention throughout her career… she rules!

The Real Ramona https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2018/01/22/the-real-ramona/ Mon, 22 Jan 2018 06:31:20 +0000 http://joy.org.au/magicportals/?p=512 https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2018/01/22/the-real-ramona/#respond https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2018/01/22/the-real-ramona/feed/ 0 <3 This week and continuing on from last show we hear from the 1991 Throwing Muses album, The Real Ramona. Released in 1991, it was the last album recorded by the band before the departure of founding member Tanya Donelly. The album marked the end of a time for the band, and a transition into a new one. The band’s two heavyweights, Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, had been the anchor holding the entire group down. After this album, Donelly left and formed Belly, taking the bassist on this album, Fred Abong, along with her. Hence, the album can be seen as an epitaph to the early days of the band.

Paris Is Burning is the 1990 film that chronicles the New York’s drag scene in the 1980s, focusing on balls, voguing and the ambitions and dreams of those who gave the era its warmth and vitality. Directed by Jennie Livingston and filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. Some critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls, and a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America. <3

<3 After a short break over the chrissy hols Magic Portals is back with Throwing Muses 1986 self titled record. Released on British independent label 4AD. This was the first album by an American band to be released on 4AD, which had concentrated primarily on British-based acts up to this point. The release marked a shift in the label’s direction; a year later 4AD would sign Pixies based in part on the band’s connection to the Muses, and by the mid-1990s much of the label’s roster was made up of American bands.
All the songs on the album were written by Kristin Hersh, with the exception of “Green”, written by Tanya Donelly. The album was produced by Gil Norton, who went on to produce albums for Pixies. The band considers the album to be untitled, with Throwing Muses the name they give to another album released in 2003.
The album was originally released in the UK by 4AD in August 1986 on LP, CD and cassette. Sometime around the early 1990s, the album went out of print, as plans were made by the band’s American label, Sire Records to issue the album for the first time in the USA, along with 1987’s Chains Changed EP, which had also never seen American release. <3

Utopia is a light and fluffy, heartfelt expression of overcoming a struggle and is so so sweet. Utopia is the ninth studio album by Icelandic singer-musician Björk, released on 24 November 2017 through One Little Indian Records. With fourteen tracks in total, Utopia clocks in at 71 minutes and 38 seconds, making it the longest of Björk’s studio albums to date. The first comprehensive media coverage on the album came from an article published by Dazed. Björk stated that her new album is an exploration of utopia, with its writing process coinciding with her own personal, political and environmental concerns. She made headlines by describing the record as her “Tinder album”. She later clarified her comment, saying that the album would cover a different emotional terrain than her last record which she constantly referred to as her heartbreak album.

Hunkpapa https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/11/21/hunkpapa/ Tue, 21 Nov 2017 08:44:53 +0000 http://joy.org.au/magicportals/?p=477 https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/11/21/hunkpapa/#respond https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/11/21/hunkpapa/feed/ 0 <3 This week on Magic Portals we hear from Throwing Muses with their 1989 album Hunkpapa. Produced by Gary Smith and engineered by Steve Haigler, it was recorded at Fort Apache Studios in Cambridge, Massachusetts and mixed at Carriage House Studios in Stamford, Connecticut. Throwing Muses is an alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Newport, Rhode Island, that toured and recorded extensively until 1997, when its members began concentrating more on other projects. The group was originally fronted by two lead singers, Kristin Hersh, and Tanya Donelly, who both wrote the group’s songs. The group was set apart from other contemporary acts by Hersh’s stark, candid writing style; Donelly’s pop stylings and vocal harmonies; and David Narcizo’s unusual drumming techniques eschewing use of cymbals. The music often draws portraits of characters from daily life or addressing relationships and the struggle in a world of systematic order.

Hunkpapa is a very important work from Throwing Muses, the album is a pleasure to listen too and deserves to be shared on the airwaves. <3

It was released in 1985. Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis covered the song “On the Run” on his 1996 solo album, Martin + Me. Wipers front man Greg Sage embarked on a solo career after the recording of the Wipers’ brilliant album Over the Edge. His first solo release, Straight Ahead, proved to be his best output yet. The album is not as electrically charged as The Wipers material, but it features incredibly strong song compositions. Musically the album is sparse with simple instrumentation of guitar, bass, and very simply played drums, yet because of the raw emotion behind the playing and song composition, these bare bones arrangements never feel dull or overly simplistic. There is a melancholic thread throughout the album, with lyrical themes of isolation, loneliness and unrequited love (listen to songs “Soul’s Tongue and “Astro Cloud”). On Straight Ahead Greg Sage opens his chest and leaves his bleeding heart on the table for the world to see; his sincerity on this album is completely genuine. <3

Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/10/24/scary-monsters-super-creeps/ Tue, 24 Oct 2017 04:05:22 +0000 http://joy.org.au/magicportals/?p=413 https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/10/24/scary-monsters-super-creeps/#respond https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/10/24/scary-monsters-super-creeps/feed/ 0 <3 Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) is the 14th studio album by David Bowie, released on 12 September 1980 by RCA Records. It was his final studio album on the label and his first following the Trilogy of Low, “Heroes” and Lodger (1977–1979).

Although the album is commonly referred to as Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), in keeping with the song title, and the album title as written on the front and back covers of the LP is Scary Monsters . . . . . and Super Creeps, the album is identified simply as Scary Monsters on the LP spine and disc label.

According to co-producer Tony Visconti, David Bowie’s method on Scary Monsters was somewhat less experimental and more concerned with achieving a commercially viable sound than had been the case with his recent releases; to that end the composer spent more time on his own developing lyrics and melodies before recording, rather than improvising music in the studio and making up words at the last minute. Aside from one cover, Tom Verlaine’s “Kingdom Come”, all tracks would be credited to Bowie alone, unlike the ‘Berlin Trilogy’ where there was an increasing amount of input from his collaborators.

Among those collaborators, Brian Eno was no longer present on Scary Monsters, but Chuck Hammer added multiple textural layers deploying guitar synth and, following his absence from Lodger, Robert Fripp returned with the distinctive guitar sound he had earlier lent to “Heroes”. Bruce Springsteen’s pianist Roy Bittan was back for his first Bowie album since Station to Station five years earlier, while the Who’s Pete Townshend guested on “Because You’re Young”. This would be the fifth and last Bowie album featuring the rhythm section of Dennis Davis and George Murray, which had been together since Station to Station.

The album is a masterpiece and like his other records is distinctly bowie. <3

The band have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time. In 1998, selected members of Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

The two most successful periods for the band were during the late 1960s British blues boom, when they were led by guitarist Peter Green and achieved a UK number one with “Albatross”; and from 1975 to 1987, as a more pop-oriented act, featuring Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

The band has achieved much throughout their career including world wide success on commercial radio. Although the band was labelled as a pop act, Fleetwood Mac still retain their authentic rock and roll sound and attitude. The band has a rich and layered sound that simply cannot be replicated or reinvented and they will go down in music history as one of the great bands who ever lived. <3

It was released on June 25, 2002 by record label DGC. Murray Street is the first album by the band to feature Jim O’Rourke as an official fifth member to bolster the group’s sound.

Sonic Youth was an American rock band based in New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, and rounded out the core line-up.

Sonic Youth emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming the most prominent of the American noise rock groups. Sonic Youth have been praised for having “redefined what rock guitar could do”, using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings and preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments’ timbre. The band is considered to be a pivotal influence on the alternative and indie rock movements. <3

Simone employed a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop.

Born in North Carolina, the sixth child of a preacher, Nina Simone aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of a few supporters in her hometown of Tryon, North Carolina, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

Nina then applied for a scholarship to study at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she was denied despite a well-received audition. Nina became fully convinced this rejection had been entirely due to racial discrimination.

The sixth studio album by Nina Simone is Wild Is The Wind (1964). The album was compiled from several recordings that were left over from sessions (in 1964 and 1965) for previous Philips albums. <3

I begin again
Said to my friend, baby
Nothin’ else mattered
He was no more than a baby then
Well he seemed broken hearted
Something within him
But the moment that I first laid
Eyes on him all alone
On the edge of seventeen
Just like the white winged dove
Sings a song
Sounds like she’s singing
Ooo, baby, ooo, ooo

Yeah, Yeah, well the music there

The album is a pure reflection of rock and roll incorporating spoken poetry. The album begins with a cover of Van Morrison’s iconic “Gloria” , and Smith’s opening words: “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine” (an excerpt from “Oath”, one of her early poems). The album cover photograph by Robert Mapplethorpe has become one of rock’s classic images.

Melodrama https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/09/14/melodrama/ Thu, 14 Sep 2017 02:14:28 +0000 http://joy.org.au/magicportals/?p=306 https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/09/14/melodrama/#respond https://joy.org.au/magicportals/2017/09/14/melodrama/feed/ 0 <3 Lordebyname of Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor (born November 7, 1996, Takapuna, New Zealand), New Zealand singer-songwriter who was known for lyrics that exhibited a mature, jaded worldview.

Lorde was raised in the suburbs of Auckland and demonstrated a knack for public performance at an early age. At age 12 she was signed to a development contract with the Universal Music Group after an agent received footage of her singing at a middle-school talent show. A lifelong fascination with royalty and aristocracy inspired her stage name, although she appended an e to the end, as she felt that “Lord” was too masculine.

This week we will be featuring her latest album Melodrama. Powered by the lead single “Green Light,” Lorde’s sophomore album, Melodrama (2017), was greeted with an overwhelmingly positive critical reception. Melodrama’s 11 songs explored themes of youth and womanhood with a sound that drew on influences ranging from modern electronic dance music to retro Europop to the soaring vocals of early Kate Bush. <3

The band had a revolving line-up of bassists and drummers, their most prolific being drummer Patty Schemel, and bassists Kristen Pfaff (d. 1994) and Melissa Auf der Maur.

Influenced by Los Angeles’ punk rock scene, the band garnered critical acclaim for their frenetic debut album, Pretty on the Inside(1991), produced by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. The album features distorted and alternating guitar compositions, screaming vocals,  a style which the band would later distance themselves from, opting for a less abrasive sound on their subsequent releases. Love’s lyrics on the album are often narrative, graphic, and abstract, detailing issues of violence, self-realisation, and womanhood. The record was dedicated to Rob Ritter of the Los Angeles punk rock acts Bags and The Gun Club. <3

What is love? well it can be many many many different things but it really only matters how you feel and its times like this that we realise that as a queer community we must fight for our right to love. This is the strongest of all emotions and will conquer and triumph over all! In this podcast we will hear form many different queer Australians in a new series called What Is Love? which my friend Mia produced and edited, please check it out on youtube when you get the chance. How dare anyone tell you that being queer is wrong or not the same, we do deserve equality and we are equal, the best way to show who we are is by being ourselves.<3

The group’s tight song structure and use of heavy distortion were hailed as extremely influential by numerous critics and musicians. The band is considered the first Pacific Northwest punk band. The Wipers first album, Is This Real?, was issued in January 1980 on Park Avenue Records, a label that the band hoped would gain them wider distribution. It was originally recorded on a 4-track in the band’s rehearsal studio, but the label insisted that the band use a professional studio. Once released, the album gained a cult following, although the band was best known for their live shows around the Portland area. The band also did not tour or do live shows very often in hope that the music would speak for itself and it most certainly has 🙂 <3
