We’re kicking off our new music this week with a first-time addition to JOY. Generally, highly successful and popular Melbourne-based hip hop artist Illy is not quite the right fit for our weekday sound. For his current fifth studio album, Two Degrees, Illy has been working with some great vocalists, such as fellow Aussie Vera Blue (aka Celia Pavey) on ‘Papercuts’ (3x platinum #2) and ‘Catch 22’ with Brit Anne-Marie (platinum #11). Working with this style of artist, it was always possible he could swing a little more pop-friendly – and he’s done just that with his latest single, ‘Oh My’, featuring the lead singer of Aussie band Tonight Alive, Jenna McDougall. Welcome to the JOY playlist, Illy!

American singer-songwriter-actress Jennifer Hudson move from RCA to EPIC Records recently – both are still part of Sony Music – and is currently working on her fourth studio album. She released the lead single, ‘Remember Me’,  in early March with barely a whisper of promotion, and it failed to make a mark anywhere in the world. It’s actually a really strong R&B/pop offering and we’re not sure what happened – the single wasn’t even serviced to radio in Australia. Just this week, however, a remix EP has been released and one of our favourite American remix producers, Dave Audé, is one of those on board. We’re hearing a new JOY anthem in this one.

Twenty-four-year-old American singer-songwriter Tinashe has released the lead single from her forthcoming second studio album, Joyride. The album had been rumoured to have been shelved, but this no longer seems to be the case. Let’s hope so, as ‘Flame’ is a particularly strong pop single that we couldn’t resist.

Norwegian producer Kygo is following up his smash hit, ‘It Ain’t Me’ (platinum #4), featuring Selena Gomez, by teaming up with one of the biggest singers in the business right now, Ellie Goulding. The new single, ‘First Time’, is sure to be another hit.

Aussie singer-songwriter Nat Conway surprised us all with her signing to Sony Music and immediately releasing the MNEK-produced cover of ‘Everybody’s Free’ late last year. Nat has has finally released her follow-up single, and this time it’s an original called ‘Summer to Stay’. This will hopefully cement her as the next big Aussie pop star – we’ve got our fingers crossed.

English duo Goldfrapp, with the out-and-proud Alison Goldfrapp out front, have released the second single from Silver Eye. ‘Systemagic’ is another of the electronic, high-energy power-pop songs we know and love them for.

American singer-songwriter Hailee Steinfeld has a new single, ‘Most Girls’, produced by One Republic’s Ryan Tedder.

British four-piece boy band The Vamps are definitely refining their sound with every release.Their latest single, ‘Middle of the Night’, featuring Danish producer Martin Jensen, is – similarly to their previous release ‘All Night’ – once again a more electronic, grown-up synth-pop banger.

Set your alarm and tune into Michael on the Six at Six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
