Kicking off our new music this week is iconic 90s Hi-NRG hit-maker from the UK Nicki French. Her 1995 dance cover of Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 worldwide hit, ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, performed nearly as well as the original in every major music market, with top-ten positions around the world (including an Australian #2). In a serious nod stylistically to Gloria Gaynor and Diana Ross disco-realness, Nicki’s brand-new single, ‘Teardrops (on the Disco Floor)’, is an instant drag show in waiting. We love it.

Harking from Wales and continuing to make bright shiny electro-pop is out-and-proud Rod Thomas, aka Bright Light Bright Light. Rod’s 2016 album, Choreography, featured Elton John on a number of the songs. His latest release, a four-track EP called Tales of the City – a nod to the iconic Armistead Maupin book series of the same name – includes two new tracks and two tracks from Choreography reworked. And there are a number of new remixes on the way too. We’ve picked up the first of the remixes, from British producer Junotrix, for the shiny and poptastic ‘Into the Night’.

Prolific Melbourne-based out-and-proud singer-songwriter Peter Wilson has just jetted off to London to work with European producers on his next album and have some well-deserved downtime as well. Before he left he sent us his latest single, ‘Satellites’, from his current album Overdrive. This is part of a double A-side single release with ‘I Just Wanna Turn Back Time’. Pete does the turning back of time pretty well by combining a touch of contemporary production with a sound rooted squarely in the Stock-Aitken-Waterman 80s, and ‘Satellites’ is no exception.

Russian DJ-producer Zedd is the king of high-profile collaborations, and his latest is no exception. With help from former One Directioner Liam Payne, ‘Get Low’ is another instalment in his string of sure-fire dance hits.

American singer-songwriter Demi Lovato won us over on first listen with her latest single, ‘Sorry Not Sorry’. Who doesn’t feel ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ at some time in their lives? The tune is damn catchy too, which obviously helps.

American DJs-producers-singers-songwriters The Chainsmokers are the act we most try to not like currently, but occasionally they win us over (such as with their recent hit with Coldplay). ‘Honest’ has silly rhyming quirky lyrics similar to their early smash-hit singles, but their cringeworthiness has decreased markedly and the tune is ridiculously catchy. The boys have got us with this one.

London-based Irish producer John Gibbons had the surprise hit of 2016 with ‘Would I Lie to You’, his reworking of the Charles & Eddie classic. He’s pushing the boundaries on this new single by taking on a Michael Jackson classic – it’s likely not going to be to the taste of stalwart MJ fans – but we think he’s done a fine job of moving ‘P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)’ onto a contemporary dance floor.

Last, but by no means least, is the huge comeback single for American singer-songwriter Kesha. Her struggles over the past few years have been fairly well published and, like the rest of the world, we couldn’t be more pleased with the powerful and inspiring single ‘Praying’. The facts that it was co-written by Australian Ben Abrahams and that harmony vocals are provided by Sydney group All My Exes Live in Texas are just icing on the cake!

Set your alarm and tune into Michael on the Six at Six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
