One highlight in the program that we were excited to review was ‘Odd Fish’, a tale of dreams, identity, and acceptance. This feel-good film follows childhood friends Hjalti and Björn, who run a seafood restaurant in their hometown during the summer. They dream of keeping the restaurant open year- round, and when an unexpected opportunity arises, Björn reveals to Hjalti that she is a transgender woman and will be known as Birna from now on. These changes test their friendship, and both must face life with a new perspective to preserve what matters most. We then turned our attention to ‘Here Comes the Dykes’, a brilliant and thought provoking short documentary that recounts the alternative history of photography by JEB (Joan E. Biren) with lesbians as central protagonists in The Dyke Show, produced by The New Yorker films. ‘Here Comes They Dykes’ is streaming for free so check it out and then do yourself a favour and dive into the world of Joan E Biren a.k.a JEB as well, you will not be disappointed. We finished up by highlighting some of the many diverse First Nations films on offer this NAIDOC Week. Running from July 6 to 13, NAIDOC Week marks a powerful milestone in 2025 with 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. This year’s theme is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy which celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of First Nation young leaders, the vision of their communities, and the legacy of their ancestors. Along with a great selection of free content streaming on DocPlay and SBS on Demand, we also featured an encore presentation of our interview from October 2024 with Jon Bell, the writer/director of ‘The Moogai’, a ground breaking First Nation’s horror thriller film that debuted at the 2024 Sydney Film Festival winning the Audience Award for Best Feature, premiered globally at the Sundance Film Festival, and won the prestigious 2024 CinefestOZ Film Prize Award.

Lockhart to our screens that explores revenge and redemption for a very wealthy American family torn apart by tragedy and their self-imposed drama. No spoilers here but needless to say that despite a beautiful setting and some stand out cast members, in this instance, not all reviews are recommendations…

We then turned our attention to a selection of TV shows, films and more that we wanted to recommend, review or rant about (yes, we’re looking at you ‘And Just Like That’ season 3!). As expected, it was an eclectic offering from the OT crew including season 2 of a popular lesbian dating show, the latest film from Celine Song that has got everyone talking about modern love, a beautiful documentary about the first US woman to fly in space and the same-sex relationship that kept her grounded, the return of M3GAN, plus much more.

When we heard Holden Sheppard had a new book out and was available for interviews, we jumped at the chance to speak with him. From the author of ‘Invisible Boys’, now a hit original series on Stan that we reviewed earlier this year and loved, comes a new novel; ‘King of Dirt’, Holden’s first novel for adults. Described as a gritty and heartfelt gay coming-of-age story set in the world of FIFO workers and tradies in Western Australia, the story follows Jack who by all accounts, including his own, is a mess. He works piecemeal construction gigs in remote WA, drinks himself to oblivion and is estranged from his family and friends. He’s consumed by a self-loathing all too common for closeted men who have grown up in a world of hate and shame. But then Jack returns to his regional hometown of Geraldton for a family wedding. He hasn’t been back since he fled at the age of eighteen, and his past soon catches up with him… It was a delight to speak with Holden Sheppard about his latest book and we hope you think so too.

We also celebrated the arrival of ‘I’m Your Venus’ on Netflix with an encore presentation of our fantastic interview from February with the film’s director Kimberly Reed, and two of the producers, Jonovia Chase and Dominique Jackson a.k.a Elektra Abundance Evangelista from Pose.

We started with looking at one of the many fantastic films on offer at this year’s Spanish Film Festival which will be bringing the fiesta to cities around Australia this June and July with a curated selection of thirty films from Spain and Latin America. ‘Baby’ is from Brazilian writer and director Marcel Caetano and is described as a vibrant queer drama that is a colourful, empathetic ode to found family, and a superb homage to the city of São Paulo and the people who struggle to survive in it. The film looks at the life of 18-year-old Wellington a.ka. Baby, who after being released from a juvenile detention centre finds himself alone and adrift, without any contact from his parents and lacking the resources to rebuild his life. He encounters Ronaldo, a mature and handsome sex worker, who takes him under his wing and teaches him new ways of surviving. We spoke with Marcelo Caetano who shares more about the making of this beautiful film and how it is bringing representation for queer Brazilian life to the world.

We then turned our attention to the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) which returns from August 7 to 24 to bring some of the most talked about films arriving hot from Cannes, Berlin, Sundance and across the globe. We welcomed back MIFF Artistic Director Al Cossar to look at the first glance announcement for this year’s festival which is celebrating its 73rd year with a theme that challenges us to ‘Look Closer’ which we dis aa we discussed some of the many fantastic films and events that will be on offer.

This incredible film is a dazzling profile of an enduring gay icon and Hollywood survivor that was brought to the screen by David Bruce Klein, an Emmy-nominated producer, director, and writer of television, film, and digital entertainment. We caught up with Bruce recently in New York and discussed his career, his love of filmmaking and of course, the incredible Liza Minelli. First up, we looked at ‘Overcompensating’ which is streaming now on Prime Video and is a college-set ensemble comedy about the wild, chaotic journey of Benny (Benito Skinner), a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen (Wally Baram), a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs. It’s fair to say this show gets the Out Takes seal of approval and will be in our top 10 of 2025.
We also took a look at ‘Misericordia’, a sharp, sinister, and deeply dark comedy thriller from director Alain Guiraudie which played to sell-out crowds at MQFF in 2024 and is screening exclusively at Cinema Nova this May. Set in the autumnal, woodsy village of Saint-Martial, Jérémie (Félix Kysyl), an out-of-work baker, has returned to his hometown after the death of his beloved former boss. When Jérémie asks to extend his visit, he begins to insert himself into his mentor’s family’s life, including his former boss’s kind-hearted widow Martine and venomously angry son Vincent. When Vincent disappears, an investigation takes place amongst the carnal world of violence and eroticism that emanates throughout Jérémie, the town, and its inhabitants. No spoilers here but let’s just say you’ll never look at mushroom picking or small town priests in the same way ever again… We finished with an encore presentation of our interview with the director/producer team Gabriel Carrubba and Zane Borg along with Liam Mollica who is the lead actor in ‘Sunflower’ which is streaming now on SBS so support great independent local queer film and check it out.

LEARN MORE ‘The Wedding Banquet’, the highly anticipated remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 classic which updates the original with a fresh take on the romantic comedy genre featuring an acclaimed and hilarious cast of multigenerational talent including Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung. Our special guest was Andrew Ahn, the co-writer and director of this refreshed adaptation who spoke to us about the journey of this remake, it’s Korean glow up and incredible cast plus my wish for a sequel to ‘Fire Island’, his big gay hit film from 2022.
We then took at the return of the 2025 HSBC German Film Festival which returns to Australian cinemas this May with a stellar line up of premieres, special guests and more. We reviewed ‘John Cranko’, Joachim A. Lang’s biopic about the brilliant dancer and choreographer who left the Royal Ballet in London in the early 60’s after he was entrapped by an undercover police officer into arrest for ‘homosexual activity’ and found fame in Stuttgart as its great dance creator. We also looked at the documentary ‘Riefenstahl’ that explores Leni Riefenstahl’s artistic legacy and her complex ties to the Nazi regime, juxtaposing her self-portrayal with evidence suggesting awareness of the regime’s atrocities. We were joined by special guest of the festival Andres Veiel, the film’s writer, and director, to delve into her complex relationship with the Nazi regime and her extraordinary career and life.

First up was ‘Unusually Normal’, a heartwarming documentary spanning eight decades that follows the lives of two lesbian grandmothers, four lesbian mothers and one lesbian granddaughter, all in the same family. Through interviews, archival footage and viral TikToks, this extraordinary family shares their journey from hidden relationships to living proudly and openly, highlighting the similarities (and differences) between three generations of gay women. Then we reviewed ‘Drive Back Home’, a dark comedy road movie showcasing the distance that can grow between two brothers amidst the vastness of the Canadian countryside. In 1970s Toronto, Perley (played by festival favourite Alan Cumming) is arrested for having sex with a man in a park. His estranged brother Weldon (Charlie Creed-Miles) is called on to bail him out. With only each other for company, the quirky Perley, his stoic brother and a taxidermied pug are trapped in a car together as they drive cross country back to small town Stanley. Inspired by a true story, this heartfelt film is about reckoning with the past and learning to forgive.
With special screenings of ‘Moonlight’ coming to IMAX this February, we took the opportunity to revisit our interview with the film’s co-writer and director Barry Jenkins. In 2017, Out Takes was in its first year on JOY and we were offered the opportunity to review a new queer independent film from the U.S. that was generating a lot of buzz in the lead up to the 2017 Academy Awards. ‘Moonlight’ is the searing story of a young black man from Miami struggling with his identity and trying to find his place in the world that Rolling Stone called ‘a masterpiece’ and Vanity Fair called it ‘timely and timeless’.  We loved this film and knew it was something special so we were honoured to speak with its very talented writer and director in January 2017 about his ground breaking film and some of its more critical themes: representation, identity and masculinity.
We also announced a special giveaway for our Aussie listeners to win a double pass to the hilarious comedy ‘One of Them Days’ starring Keke Palmer and SZA , in cinemas March 6. Check out Out Takes on Instagram and Facebook for more details. #OneOfThemDays © 2025 CTMG. All Rights Reserved.

LEARN MORE ‘Invisible Boys’, the new LGBTQ coming-of-age Australian series set in the unforgiving Western Australian coastal city of Geraldton, with the 2017 plebiscite on same-sex marriage as the backdrop, It follows a quartet of gay young men trying to figure out how to navigate family, friends and the expectations put on them and is adapted by director Nicholas Verso from Holden Sheppard’s award-winning 2019 novel of the same name. We always love shining a light on new local queer productions and it’s fair to say this latest offering is a promising start to the year ahead for local LGBTQ content on our small screens. Next up we turned we’re turned our attention to ‘Queer’, which is directed by Out Takes favourite Luca Guadagnino and based on the 1985 novella by William S. Burroughs. Set in 1950s Mexico City, the film follows an outcast American expatriate played by Daniel Craig who becomes infatuated with a much younger man played by Drew Starkey and it features Jason Schwartzman and Lesley Manville in supporting roles. Director John Waters ranked Queer second on a list of his favourite movies of 2024, writing that Craig “may be queerbait for taking on the gay beatnik role of William Burroughs’s alter ego, but I’m all for it’ – we couldn’t agree more! Finally, we welcomed back the return of the Australian International Documentary Conference aka AIDC which is back on in Melbourne in early March. The 2025 AIDC program includes over 40 sessions, more than 115 speakers and 90 industry decision makers and is inspired by the theme “Future Telling: New Horizons in Documentary & Factual Storytelling”. One of the key elements of delivering a successful conference is the program and we were delighted to be joined by AIDC Programmer Alice McShane to get the full scoop on how they’ve pulled together this phenomenal line up for 2025 and some of the many highlights on offer at this year’s conference.

LEARN MORE ‘I’m Your Venus’, a powerful film from the U.S. that is described as a vital companion piece to Jennie Livingston’s legendary 1990 ballroom documentary ‘Paris Is Burning’. One of the iconic trans stars of that seminal film, Venus Xtravaganza, was murdered before its release and thirty-five years later, her two families – the biological Pellagattis and ballroom Xtravaganzas – unite to honour her legacy and seek justice. Old wounds are reopened as her cold case is reexamined, amidst a fight to posthumously amend her birth certificate to finally reflect her actual name and gender. Overflowing with love for its subject, this cathartic documentary is a moving ode to Venus’ life and impact, and the power of the ballroom community. We were honoured to be joined by the films director, New York based trans filmmaker Kimberly Reed, and two of the executive producers on the film, Jonovia Chase and Dominique Jackson, to discuss their involvement with the film and the importance of continuing to tell Venus’s story and the importance of ballroom on queer culture. We also reviewed ‘Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All’, a comprehensive documentary about the Grammy-winning folk-rock duo that explores their lives, music, and activist projects over the course of their incredible 40+ year career.

Summoned to suburban Melbourne to celebrate their mum’s birthday, she promptly dies overnight, and they’re forced to work things out while on a road trip back to the remote northern NSW town where they grew up, so they can scatter her ashes. Our first special guest for this show was Riley Nottingham, one of the leads in the film, who discussed his career and involvement in the project including the importance of carpooling in getting to know your co-stars. We also were joined by Janet Anderson, an up and coming trans actress and creative who the Casting Guild of Australia recently crowned as one of Australia’s top emerging talents of 2024.  We discussed her road from singing to studying to being a working actor, the impact of social media on performers and how this accolade could potentially impact her career.

This five-part Melbourne-based series brings us the school run drop-off from hell; after single mum Abi accidentally kills a cyclist on the morning school run, her to-do list gets a lot more complicated as she tries to juggle the battle of everyday parenting with the disposal of a corpse. Over the course of one not-so-average school day, Abi must navigate a suspicious rival parent, avoid the police, and hide the evidence – all before 3:30pm pick-up. Other than the murder and disposal of a body, this series rang very true for our co-host with kids so we were delighted to be joined by the series co-writer, co-creator and director Charlotte George to give us the origin story behind this innovative series, the incredible cast involved and more.
We were also inspired by our recent review and interview with the team behind ‘Videoland’ to revisit some of the queer films from the 90’s, a few classics and some personal favourites, that we rented over and over again back in the day and that we recommend you revisit or check out for the first time.

LEARN MORE First up was ‘Videoland’, a very funny, quirky and queer Aussie production that centres on teenage video store clerk Hayley who is furtively working her way through a handwritten list of queer films in the hope of helping her navigate her way in to lesbian life while managing her relationships with her best friend, her boss and a potential love interest in mysterious customer Jennifer. We were delighted to be joined by the series writer and director Jessica Smith and lead actor Emmanuelle Mattana to talk about how this wonderful series came to be, the incredible attention to detail in the production design and much more.
We were also joined by Stephen Gaunson, Director of Higher Degrees Research in the College of Design & Social Context at RMIT who is hosting a special introductory panel discussion at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday September 11 for a special 30th anniversary screening of ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’. We took this opportunity to discuss the enduring legacy of Priscilla in the Australian cinematic landscape, explore the film’s significant impact on society and how it became internationally renowned as a symbol of freedom and expression for the LGBTQIA+ community.

While some discovered transcendent lives and careers, others were abandoned and unequipped to handle fame, with some going on to suffer fatal consequences. We were joined by Australian filmmaker Eddie Martin who directed ‘We Were Once Kids’ and presented the stories of the now adults who as the original ‘Kids’ were mainly unknown teens actually living this life who’s likeness and stories were taken and worked into this film that won awards, made millions of dollars and turned them in to overnight celebrities without any of the skills or support needed to handle it. LEARN MORE Melbourne Documentary Film Festival by turning the spotlight directly on to three local filmmakers presenting queer focused short films in this year’s program that offer further proof of the high quality content being produced around Australia.
Our first guest was delsi who’s film ‘FEMME’ explores what it means to be a queer femme person in modern Australia through the perspectives of 13 queer people and looks at some of the unique challenges femme people face and the beautiful parts too. Our second guest was Clementine Lloyd with ‘SYSTEM ERRORS’ which delves into the diverse experiences of online sex workers, seeking to humanise those who are frequently dehumanised by societal norms . Last but not least was ‘THE END IS THE BEGINNING IS THE END’ which is directed by Yilin Xie and is a portrait of Horis Chen who sees homosexuality through the lens of Buddhism, introducing an Eastern approach that all beings are equal regardless of gender or sexual orientation. All three films are part of the MDFF Shorts Session 5 which is selling fast so don’t miss your chance to see these films on the big screen this July.
We also reviewed the latest feature documentary from David Charles Rodrigues in the lead up to the Australian premiere of ‘S/He Is Still Her/e – The Official Genesis P-Orridge Documentary’ on Saturday July 27 and features an exclusive Q&A after the screening with the director in person hosted by Melbourne Queer Film Festival’s Program Director Cerise Howard. Co-presented by MQFF and ACMI, ‘S/He Is Still Her/e’ is an authorised documentary portrait of one of the most singular – yet profoundly plural – and tirelessly radical artists of the 20th and 21st century, made during the final year of their life. The film interweaves archival footage of Genesis P-Orridge with raw, reflective interviews conducted while wholly cognisant they hadn’t much longer to live. It is like no other film you’ll see this year and with an in-person Q&A with the director on offer it is definitely not to be missed.

Stuck quarantining in a hotel room before the funeral, Tobin begins to unravel, not ready to confront a past long-left behind. The film stars critically acclaimed WA actor Daniel Monks (Sissy, Pulse) Susie Porter (Ladies in Black) and Anthony Brandon Wong (from Sequin in a Blue Room) and is written and directed by Timothy Despina Marshall who joined us to discuss the process of making the film and why it was important for him to share this story in his feature film debut.

As always, we had a great time taking a deep dive in to the nominees and while we acknowledge the frontrunner in the race (hello ‘Oppenheimer’), we also made some big swings at a few categories that we hope could have a surprise or two for us all when the winners are announced Monday March 11 from 11am AEDT. For... LEARN MORE ‘Equal The Contest’ is a wonderful documentary by Mitch Nivalis that tells their story as a 42-year-old, non-binary filmmaker who joins a new local women’s footy club in Regional Victoria where a simple desire to play becomes a complex journey of inclusion and belonging. An unexpected turn means the team has to fight to play and their campaign challenges age old sporting traditions and joins the wider movement for gender equity. Mitch was one of our special guests for this show and we were delighted to meet them and get the story behind the story on their incredibly engaging and entertaining film.
We also took a look at ‘Triple OH!’, a 5-part series streaming via SBS on Demand that explores the personal and professional lives of Tayls and Cate, two paramedics with strikingly different personalities, who ride together to save people from life-threatening and sometimes bizarre medical emergencies, while figuring out their attraction for each other along the way. Starring Brooke Satchwell and Tahlee Fereday, this inventive online short-form approach to storytelling packs a lot in, with each episode clocking in at under 11 minutes and featuring a lot of laughs, queer sexual chemistry and medical misadventures to keep you hooked to the end. Co-creator and writer of the series Erica Harrison also joined us on the show where we discussed local queer representation on our screens and how this project is another great chapter in our community telling our stories.

First up, we featured a beautiful documentary that is garnering well deserved praise and accolades around the world including being the first ever film to win the Silver Bear Jury Prize (Short Film) and the Teddy Award for best queer short film at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. ‘Marungka Tjalatjunu’, which translates in to Dipped in Black, tells the story of Yankunytjatjara man Derik Lynch who leaves behind the oppression of white city life in Adelaide and embarks on a road trip back to Country for spiritual healing, as memories from his childhood return. Both Derik and his co-director / collaborator Matthew Thorne joined us to discuss the film and share their story with us. We were also delighted to be joined by Natasha Gadd, the creative director and CEO of the Australian International Documentary Conference, who gave us the full scoop on this year’s program, guest speakers, special screenings and more.

‘Isla’s Way’ focuses on the life of formidable great grandmother Isla Roberts who insists that although she’s not a lesbian, her girlfriend Susan is. In this tender, richly humorous portrait of an 87-year-old horse carriage driving champion, we learn what makes an ordinary life extraordinary. This wonderful new Aussie documentary feature is fresh from its world premiere at this year’s Adelaide Film Festival and we were delighted to have its director Marion Pilowsky on to give us the full behind the scene stories of this must-see documentary.
We then dived in to our recommendations and as always it’s a mixed bag (a film starring Annette Benning and Jodie Foster, a historical 20th century gay romance drama miniseries, Taylor Swift’s record-breaking concert film and more). Guaranteed that we have something for everyone and a couple of gems in there just waiting to be discovered.

First up we discussed... LEARN MORE 2023 Cunard British Film Festival which is presented by Palace Cinemas and is a showcase for many new and retrospective British films. Two of the fantatsic new features on offer were the Noel Coward documentary ‘Mad About Ther Boy’ and ‘Pretty Red Dress’, the brilliant debut film from London based writer/director Dionne Edwards. We enjoyed both for many different reasons and were delighted to be joined by Dionne Edwards to discuss her film and more on this show.
We also took another look at the program for the 33rd annual Melbourne Queer Film Festival a.k.a MQFF which is back in cinemas from November 9 to 19 and once again we provided a few more recommendations on what to check out on the big screen at this years festival.

LEARN MORE Our first guest for this program was Stephen Kijak, the director of ROCK HUDSON: ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWED, a wonderful new documentary that is an intimate portrait of one of Hollywood’s most celebrated leading men of the 1950’s and ‘60’s and an icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, whose diagnosis and eventual death from AIDS in 1985 shocked the world, subsequently shifting the way the public perceived the pandemic. The film examines not only Hudson’s cinematic and cultural legacy but takes a rare and sometimes heart-breaking look at his private life through interviews with close friends and former lovers. ‘Rock Hudson: All that Heaven Allowed’ is available to rent and buy on digital now.
Our second guest has a fantastic new book that celebrates the films and magical movie moments that shape our queer identity. Larry Duplechan is a critically acclaimed award-winning American novelist and film lover. His latest book is ‘Movies that Made Me Gay’, a deeply affecting personal memoir and anthology of essays that celebrates his love of cinema and it’s connection to his life and career. From classic Hollywood musicals to definitive black films, from queer cinema to the latest cinematic releases, Larry Duplechan reframes gay cinema through the lens of a life lived observing the community’s journey from persecution to emancipation to acceptance.

LEARN MORE With a new documentary coming to Netflix this July and to acknowledge what would have been his 60th birthday, we dedicated this program to the  legacy and impact of Wham! and George Michael on queer and pop culture.  From their friendship as children through to their early start in music and on to George’s mega super stardom as a solo artist, these documentaries paint a picture of the opportunities and challenges they faced including George’s very public coming out and how he used his platform to help and inspire queer people around the world.
We were joined on the show by the wonderful award-winning stand-up comedian, television host, writer and podcaster Wil Anderson. You may not know this but is a big fan of George Michael which he highlighted in his recent Melbourne Comedy Festival show where he talked about managing his mental health and how a George Michael song and George’s resilience had such a strong impact on him during and post lockdown. We also looked at the documentary on George’s career and personal life that is streaming now on SBS on Demand.
Finally, we also took this opportunity to take a sneak peak at the ‘Barbie’ movie that is in cinemas from July 20 and has everyone talking for all of the right reasons. Three of the stars of the film – Issa Rae, America Ferrera and Margot Robbie (who also produced the film) along with its director Great Gerwig were in Australia recently to promote its upcoming release. Out Takes was invited to listen in to the virtual press conference and we’re sharing some of the highlights from the event hosted by Zan Rowe and held near Bondi Beach, just the place you’d expect to run in to Barbie down under!

LEARN MORE For this Out Takes, we turned our attention to ‘Deadloch’, a new Australian original series from the absurdly funny and clever minds of Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney on Amazon Prime Video that takes the crime genre, mixes in a huge dash of comedy and bad language, the beautiful Tasmanian landscape along with an incredibly diverse and talented cast and turns it into one of the most hilarious, entertaining and queerest local productions we’ve seen in a very long time.
Set in the fictional Tasmanian town of Deadloch, the show begins when the community is left reeling after a local man turns up dead on the beach. Two female detectives are thrown together to solve the case along with their overeager junior constable Abby. As the town implodes from the realisation there is a serial killer in their midst, this trio have to put their differences aside and work together to solve this case.
We were joined for an exclusive interview with cast members Nina Oyama and Tom Ballard to find out how they got involved in this project, what it was like shooting for six months straight in Tasmania and how queer this show really is (spoiler, it’s very queer). The first three episodes of Deadloch premiered exclusively on Prime Video globally from June 2 with new episodes available each Friday, leading up to the season finale on Friday July 7.
