Made in collaboration with Georgie herself, this is the story of a loving family who stood strong behind their daughter, offering an undeniable case for the agency of transgender children and teenagers to make their own decisions about their gender identity. The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone premieres on Netflix from September 22 and we were honoured to have Georgie and director Maya Newell on to speak with us about their incredible film.

Next up we spoke with Lachlan Mcleod, the director of ‘Clean’, which takes us into the world of trauma cleaning and follows Sandra Pankhurst and her team of ‘trauma cleaners’: those who scrub crime scenes, suicide sites and clear out hoarders’ homes. It’s also takes a look at Sandra’s incredible life and the role that trauma and resilience played in her life and how she lived her life honestly and authentically in every way including as a transgender woman.  Clean premiered at the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival and is in cinemas now.

Our final guest was Gus Berger, the director of ‘The Lost City of Melbourne’, which delves in to the attempted ‘modernisation’ of Melbourne in the 1950s which destroyed much of the city, including its elegant cinemas and majestic theatres. Now, this brilliant documentary is bringing them back to life. ‘The Lost City of Melbourne’ had its world premiere screening at the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival and is screening now across Melbourne at many of our favourite local independent cinemas.

Now, a new Melbourne-made documentary called ‘The Lost City of Melbourne’ is bringing them back to life. In examining Melbourne’s rich architectural and social past, director and producer Gus Berger also prompts consideration as to how continuing development and gentrification may impact the city’s artistic lineage and treasured landmarks. ‘The Lost City of Melbourne’ is a celebration – not just of Melbourne’s beloved, bygone picture palaces, but also of its enduring relationship to the cinema itself.

This momentous milestone also ties in with the upcoming release of a fantastic new documentary called ‘The Lost City of Melbourne’ that premiered at the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival. Melbourne has been an epicentre of arts and culture since the 1850s and has a long term love affair with movies and a complicated relationship with the theatres that screen them across the city. The film highlights how the attempted ‘modernisation’ of Melbourne in the 1950s destroyed much of the city, including its elegant cinemas and picture palaces, and what has survived and thrived since then.

We were joined for this program by good friend of the show and Cinema Nova CEO Kristian Connelly to discuss this incredible milestone of one of Melbourne’s favourite arthouse cinemas. We also shared some of our favourite Melbourne movie moments and gave our recommendations on what to check out and where around Melbourne’s eclectic cinema scene.

Our first guest was Goran Stolevski, the breakout director behind Of An Age, which screened as the opening night film for the Festival and continues to screen as part of the program. Of An Age is a tender, quintessentially Melbourne homage to queer desire. It has garnered critical acclaim and cemented Stolevski’s place as one of the most exciting up and coming directors (yes – we’re serious – Variety named him one of 10 most exciting up and coming directors in the world).
Our second guest was MIFF Program Manager, Kate Fitzpatrick, who joined us to talk about Melbourne On Film: Cinema That Defines Our City – the new anthology book published by the Festival to commemorate its 70th anniversary this year.
Finally, we were joined by local director Craig Boreham, who spokeabout his new film Lonesome, which also screens as part of the Festival. Lonesome tells the story of handsome cowboy Casey, who ventures from his rural NSW hometown to the harsh streets of Sydney to find himself. Lonesome is a sex positive exploration of our hunger for connection, and screens as part of the Festival after hitting the festival circuit around the world.

We started by speaking to Alyce Adams, Manager of Investment and Development for Online Content at Screen Australia. Her role includes managing development, production and completion funding for multiple online projects across TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, ABC iView, SBS OnDemand, Blackpills, Netflix and Stan. We speak with Alyce about the rise of Tik Tok as a medium for diverse story telling, and the new Every Voice initiative at Screen Australia. The initiative provides funding to online storytellers in a bid to help cultivate original, diverse local story telling for online, TikTok audiences around the world. We also revisit chats with Hannah McElhinney, the co-creator of Transathletica, and Logan Miucha, the director of Scattered – two new, boundary pushing queer series that have reached millions of audiences around the globe on TikTok.

First up was Hannah McElhinney, one of the team behind the amazing and very timely new Australian documentary series TransAthletica, which has been made exclusively for TikTok. TransAthletica is a 17 part series that focuses on the trans experience in a world of gendered sports and features the voices of leading transgender athletes and activists. Also on the show were two filmmakers whose documentaries are featured in this years MDFF; ‘The Sound of Identity’ director James Kicklighter and John Tsiavis, the director of the short documentary ‘Mellow’. ‘The Sound of Identity’ is a unique, history making, feature length documentary starring Lucia Lucas, the first ever transgender woman performing an opera lead in the U.S. with a professional company in Tulsa Olahoma. Playing Don Giovanni, Lucia Lucas breaks archaic social barriers, making way for other trans opera performers. ‘Mellow’ is a moving portrait of a trans, non-binary activist in Los Angeles and shares his story of turning hardship into positivity even in the face of so many obstacles

Featuring an exclusive interview with four time Academy Award winner Catherine Martin on her experience working on the film as a producer, costume designer and production designer plus her insight in to why her creative and life partner Baz Luhrmann was so passionate about bringing Elvis’s story and legacy back to the big screen. We of course took a closer look at the film too, which features a breakout performance from Austin Butler and a very rare stumble for Tom Hanks, and let you know our thoughts on this latest retelling of the life, loves and tragedy behind the Elvis legend.

This included Head On, Call Me By Your Name and Monnlight plus clips from our interviews with Luca Guadagnino and Barry Jenkins. LEARN MORE Winter is here in Melbourne and it’s very cold outside so we thought what better way to warm us all up is by dedicating this program to some of the latest and upcoming queer films and television that are keeping us happy while we stay warm indoors. From the breakout Netflix hit ‘Heartstoppers’ to the delightful animated film ‘Turning Red’, there really is something for everyone this winter.
We also have an exclusive interview with gay Hollywood royalty Billy Eichner about jis eagerly anticipated ground breaking gay rom-com film ‘Bros’ which he produced, co-wrote and starred in and is in cinemas later this year. We even turn a queer eye to ‘Top Gun: Maverick”; The Daily Beast calls it ‘the Gayest Movie of The Year’  which we’re not sure if that’s accurate but it is definitely one of the most fun films of the year. LEARN MORE Charli XCX: Alone Together, which is in Australian cinemas from June 2 – 5 only.
Filmed at Charli’s home during the pandemic in 2020, the film’s chronicles the recording of Charli’s album ‘How I’m Feeling Now’, which she decided to record during lockdown in an extremely ambitious and absurd 40 days. The unique creative boundaries take Charli on a creative and emotional journey like no other, pushing her to the brink of disaster as she is forced to confront mental health issues, rekindle her relationship and connect with vulnerable LGBTQ+ fans in need.
To discuss the film we were joined by Bradley Bell and Pablo Jones-Soler a.k.a Bradley & Pablo, the international creative duo who directed Charli XCX: Alone Together and who have worked on music videos and projects with Lil Nas X, Dua Lipa, Cardi B and many more plus were recently nominated for Best Director at the 2021 US Music Video Awards. We also spoke to JOY’s own Jordan Johnstone who gave his opinion on the film as a long time fan (spoiler alert, he loved it, as did we!).

Our first guest was Diana Paez, a Melbourne based filmmaker who’s fantastic documentary ‘Nuestra Voces’ (Our Voices) is featured in this years festival. This moving documentary tells the story of a group of Spanish-speaking migrants who arrived in Victoria between the 1960s and 80s, showcasing their contribution to the social and cultural fabric of Australia. We also talked to Benjamin Zeccola who is not only the CEO of Palace Cinemas but also the driving force behind the team that is bringing the Moro Spanish Film Festival back in 2022 to cinemas around Australia. We spoke to Ben following the recent success of the festival’s opening night and we looked at some of the great films on offer this year.
Next up we turned our attention to the South African Film Festival which is being held from May 7 – 24 at cinemas and online across Australia. This not-for-profit event is organised by a group of passionate volunteers to showcase South African talent, culture and diversity and support educational opportunities for disadvantaged children. We spoke with Dr Melanie Chait who’s documentary ‘Dance Me To the End of Time’ is featured in this year’s festival. This beautiful and sensitive film charts the life and battle with cancer of acclaimed British theatremaker Nancy Diuguid, made by her life partner and award-winning filmmaker, Melanie Chait. The documentary tells this intimate story of their life together, their love for one another, the creation of their family, and the way they deal with Nancy’s prognosis. This documentary is not an extended meditation on death, but rather a celebration of an energised and involved life.

LEARN MORE FLEE is the film everyone is talking about and is in cinemas nationally now. From festival favourite to making history as the first film to ever be Oscar nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film, it is a documentary that has captured the world’s imagination and won’t let go. We had a lot to say about this fantastic film and were delighted to pair that with our exclusive interview with FLEE director Jonas Poher Rasmussen.
We also had the pleasure of speaking with Lauren Valmadre, the Conference Programmer at the Australian International Documentary Conference, or AIDC for those in the know. We spoke about her extensive career and background in film, what you must not miss at this years AIDC and more.
We also heard from local filmmaker Suzi Taylor who over a decade ago brought us the SBS coming-of-age documentary film ‘Love in Full Colour’ which told the stories of 12 queer teenagers who moved audiences to laughter and to tears with their warmth, honesty, insightfulness and wit. In 2022 the filmmakers are reconnecting with those original participants to create a follow-up film: ’10 Years in Full Colour’. Find out more about the project and how to support it here  and to receive a free link to watch the first doco in the series, ‘Love in Full Colour’, sign up to the e-news here.
A special thanks to the teams at Madman Entertainment and Nixco for making the Flee interview a reality, we love your work and appreciate your support!

Since its... LEARN MORE Since its early days, Hollywood has been plagued by casting controversies: whitewashing, cultural appropriation, and since the days of new queer cinema, the charge that straight actors are taking gay roles, or that cis actors shouldn’t play trans, or that, well, there just aren’t any bi roles for straight actors to take.
So this week on Out Takes, we’re unpacking the question of who should play what and why the question of why casting has become just so controversial. Are there some roles that some actors shouldn’t play or is this just another case of the squeaky wheel?

Jacqueline Bublitz is the author of ‘Before You Knew My Name’,... LEARN MORE Jacqueline Bublitz is the author of ‘Before You Knew My Name’, her debut novel that came out in May of this year and has since gained critical acclaim and commercial success across the globe. She’s a proud kiwi feminist who calls Melbourne home and who’s love of New York City helps to shape this beautiful and captivating story of two women, Ruby and Alice, and their trauma, connection and our cultural obsession with dead girls. But, this is not just another novel about a dead girl. Giving a voice to the voiceless, ‘Before You Knew My Name’ doesn’t ask whodunnit. Instead, this powerful, hopeful novel asks: Who was she? And what did she leave behind?

For this program, we talked about how this passionate story teller became a published author, we looked at her creative process, explore the themes and characters in the book as well as the influences and experiences that inspire her and in turn made their way into this incredibly powerful and immersive tale.

These are films that we’ve covered on Out Takes before, but they’re films that form an important weapon in our arsenal against conversion and suppression practices. So we revisited our exclusive interviews with Joel Edgerton, the director and star of BOY ERASED, and Desiree Akhavan, the director of THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST, as we explored the ways in which modern queer cinema denounces conversion practices that target the LGBTIQ community.

LEARN MORE ‘Dating Amber’ is the second feature film from the very talented London-based Irish writer / director David Freyne.
With the film now hitting cinema screens in Australia and available to watch online around the world, we were delighted to speak with David about this fantastic film and hear how this semi-autobiographical tale went from the page to the screen, how he pulled together such an incredible cast to tell it and why we still need these LGBTIQ stories more than ever in 2021.
Set in Kildare, Ireland during the mid-90s, ‘Dating Amber’ is a heartwarming and hilarious coming out and coming of age story which follows Eddie and Amber as they decide to stage a relationship to stop everyone speculating about their sexuality. The closeted teenagers reluctantly agree to be each other’s beards. Eddie is keen to follow his Dad into the military, while Amber dreams of moving to the liberal hub of London. Their parallel journeys dispense with a one-size-fits-all coming-out narrative and remind us all that becoming who you are meant to be is never easy but ultimately it is the most important thing you can do in life. Oh, and having great friends to help you get there is fundamental.

LEARN MORE Film productions are in hiatus. Cinemas are closed. And the industry is scrambling to find a way to survive what has already been a bleak few months. But it’s not all bad news. We explored some of the brilliant new initiatives to keep film and cinema industries afloat and to keep you entertained.

Our first guest was Sydney Film Festival Director, Nashen Moodley, who joined us to talk about WE ARE ONE, a new digital global film festival set to hit YouTube later this month. WE ARE ONE brings together 20 of the most preeminent film festivals from across the globe for 10 days of free-to-watch programming, including some of the most anticipated yet-to-be-released independent films.
We also spoke with friend of the program and MQFF Program Director, Spiro Economopoulos, about MQFF COUCH CRITIC, the Festival’s new online competition designed to get you reviewing your favourite queer films.
And finally, we were joined by Michael Carrington, the Director of Entertainment and Specialist Programming at the ABC. We spoke with Michael about the ABC’s groundbreaking FRESH START FUND, which provides urgent and critical support to independent Australian producers. The FRESH START FUN is a new 5 million dollar initiative designed to safeguard local content and support Australian creatives through the unprecedented current public health crisis.

It’s that time of year again! JOY 94.9 is Australia’s premiere LGBTI radio station and it needs your help. So this week on Out Takes, we’re celebrating RADIOTHON – JOY’s annual supporter drive – and the importance of keeping independent programs like OUT TAKES on the air.
This year’s RADIOTHON theme is We Are You, so we’re bringing the Out Takes family together for a very special Out Takes look at why LGBTI representation in film is so important and why seeing ourselves on the big screen matters.

We’re looking back at a number of exclusive Out Takes interviews that have highlighted the importance of queer representation, including chats with Academy Award winning director Barry Jenkins, bi-icon Desiree Akihvan and academic Ruby Rich, who coined the phrase New Queer Cinema some thirty years ago. These are Out Takes exclusives that demonstrate just how important independent voices can be.

LEARN MORE Yes, the Academy has singled out some fine feats of film making but one thing is plain: this years nominees are decidedly male-centric and where the Academy has recently sought to champion diversity, this year’s nominees seem to eschew diversity altogether (#justice4JLo).

So, as a counterpoint, we also celebrated the theatrical release of Jay Roache’s ‘Bombshell’, the highly anticipated film looking at the accounts of several women at Fox News who set out to expose CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. We also got to speak with Australian queer and non-binary actor Liv Hewson (pictured right) who features in ‘Bombshell’ and who has also starred in numerous film and television projects here and overseas including the Netflix series ‘Santa Clarita Diet’. We spoke with Liv about their role in the star studded and Oscar nominated film and get their thoughts on what it means to be out, proud and non-binary in Hollywood.

To mark the occasion, we took a look back at our last four years as the home of queer cinema on JOY 94.9

When we first went to air some four years ago, we set out to bring the filmic landscape on the other side of the rainbow to JOY. Since then, we’ve donned ruby slippers with Judy and ballet shoes with Billy; we’ve been over the rainbow and star-crossed a few times; we’ve celebrated winter in Westbeth and burned in Paris; we’ve been to Arendelle and Oz and galaxies far away; we’ve gone looking for fantastic beasts and Cinderella’s missing glass slipper; we’ve travelled to Hollywood and gone globe trotting around the world: we’ve looked at national cinemas in France, Germany, Israel, Taiwan, Finland, Poland and a bunch of other places; we’ve spent the weekend with Haigh and been disobedient with Lelio and basked in the moonlight with Barry.
But to celebrate our 200th episode, we came full circle. In our first episode, now four years ago, we were joined by academic Ruby Rich, who coined the term “New Queer Cinema” in a now seminal paper for Sight and Sound. This week, as we take stock of our past four years on air, and the very many films that we’ve looked at, we were joined by Ruby Rich once again to speak about about the on going importance of queer cinema and how far it has come in the last four years.

Now, FROZEN 2 is screening in cinemas around the world, and has already grossed over $738 million dollars internationally.... LEARN MORE Disney’s FROZEN franchise is a certified box office success. But its also represents a watershed moment in Disney’s cultural and representational legacy. In fact, when FROZEN first hit cinemas, the internet was atwitter with conspiracies that Elsa might be gay. Six years later, Elsa’s sexuality is still unconfirmed. But there can be very little doubt: FROZEN 2 is a very queer film.
So for this Out Takes program, we journeyed deep into the heart of Arendelle and the Wonderful World of Disney to celebrate the theatrical release of Disney’s FROZEN 2. Our guest was Dr Eleanor Byrne, whose seminal thesis “Deconstructing Disney” explores the latent queer potential of Disney classics like SNOW WHITE, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and now the FROZEN franchise. We spoke with Byrne about the way that gender and sexuality function in Disney films, and their potential for queer interpretation.

First up we looked at ‘Brittany Runs A Marathon’, the new feature film from gay writer and director Paul Downs Colaizzo that caused a bidding war at this year’s Sundance Film Festival with Amazon Studios acquiring worldwide distribution rights to the film for $14 million dollars. Based on a true story, the film follows Brittany Forgler, a hilarious hot mess of a New Yorker who always knows how to have a good time, but at 27, her late-night adventures are starting to catch up to her. She takes the first step in changing her life by actually taking a run around the block and that’s where the story gets interesting. Our special guests on the show were the star of the film, Jillian Bell, and Paul Downs Colaizzo (pictured with Out Takes presenter Conrad) who took us behind the scenes of this funny, frank and insightful film which is in cinemas now.
We also took a look at ‘The Ice King’ a searing documentary about John Curry, a lost cultural icon in a fascinating story of art, sport, sexuality, and rebellion. It includes incredible unseen footage of some of his most remarkable performances and with access to Curry’s letters, archive interviews, and interviews with his family, friends and collaborators, this is a portrait of the man who turned ice-skating from a dated sport into an exalted art form. The Ice King is an exclusive release on DocPlay, a new streaming service featuring award winning and exclusive documentaries from around the globe.
Special thanks to Alicia and Cathy at ABCG Film for the opportunity to interview Jillian Bell and Paul Downs Colaizzo, and for their ongoing support of Out Takes.
