Dogs, cats and other pets give us unconditional love, loyalty and acceptance.

Sadly, thousands of animals will be brought to The Lost Dogs’ Home this Christmas, having nowhere else to go.

Many of these animals will have faced unknown dangers and suffering after having to fend for themselves. Each one will need care and support in order to go on to find their forever family.

It is through the generous support of our donors that we can continue to help dogs and cats in need. On this edition of Pets-A-Loud we are going to tell you how you can make a difference this Christmas.

Also coming up on JOY’s very own show about pets:

  • We introduce you to loving Bull Arab cross, Ben and get an update from Shelter Manager Alisa on how Ben is today.
  • We’ll hear from Dr Alan Bolton about some of the programs we have at The Lost Dogs’ Home which benefit from your generous donations.

Often we see stories of animals being rescued by compassionate humans, however, from time to time we see stories where it is actually our animals who do the rescuing.

Animals can do amazing things, from searching rubble for earthquake survivors to finding help for their owner trapped in the wilderness. But, instead of gloating about their accomplishments, these heroic animals are humble and modest. They act without craving recognition or reward and are happy to return to their everyday lives with their families once they have fulfilled their duty.

On this edition of Pets-A-Loud we celebrate the heroic acts of our companion animals. Also coming up:

  • There are a lot of stories which celebrate the heroic actions of our companion animals. We take a look at just some of the heroic acts done by companion animals.
  • With summer fast approaching our social calendar is starting to become very full. We take a look at some of the events coming soon!

You are not alone! Studies from beyondblue found that approximately 3.8 million Australians don’t routinely break for lunch and an increasing sedentary lifestyle isn’t good for our physical or mental health.

In a bid to encourage healthy living with a companion animal The Lost Dogs’ Home brought back its Human Walking Program to the city workers of Melbourne.  The program promotes active living with a companion animal and one of the best ways to do this is by exercising with your dog.

To celebrate this year’s Human Walking Program this edition of Pets-A-Loud is a celebration of all the ways you can get out and be active with your own dog. So tune in for more!

Extreme Weather and Our Pets https://joy.org.au/petsaloud/2015/10/extreme-weather-pets/ Thu, 22 Oct 2015 23:27:32 +0000 http://joy.org.au/petsaloud/?p=1109 https://joy.org.au/petsaloud/2015/10/extreme-weather-pets/#respond https://joy.org.au/petsaloud/2015/10/extreme-weather-pets/feed/ 0 We love summer! Its arrival signals the start of warmer weather, Christmas, New Year, summer holidays and most importantly, trips to the beach.

However, the arrival of summer also marks the start of the most significant period of the year for Australia’s climate. Bushfires, tropical cyclones, heatwaves and severe thunderstorms tend to be more frequent and extreme during the summer months – impacting ourselves and our pets.

On this edition of Pets-A-Loud the team are taking a look at how these weather events impact our pets and what pet owners can do to make sure their pets are cared for.

Also on this edition of Pets-A-Loud:

  • What do pet owners need to plan for this bushfire season? The team talk to the CFA to find out.
  • Dr Caroline Butler from The Lost Dogs’ Home talks to us about what pet owners need to do if their pet is injured during an extreme weather event.

It’s Dogtober! https://joy.org.au/petsaloud/2015/10/its-dogtober/ Fri, 09 Oct 2015 04:19:39 +0000 http://joy.org.au/petsaloud/?p=1096 https://joy.org.au/petsaloud/2015/10/its-dogtober/#respond https://joy.org.au/petsaloud/2015/10/its-dogtober/feed/ 0 Assistance dogs open the door to independence for their owners, helping them with everyday tasks we take for granted, like retrieving dropped objects and pressing buttons. Their wagging tails and unconditional love also help relieve social isolation for people in need, providing physical and emotional support for their team mate over their working life.

October is Dogtober, an awareness month for Assistance Dogs Australia and on this edition of Pets-A-Loud we are celebrating the work of assistance dogs and the joy they bring to their team mate’s life.

Also on this episode of Pets-A-Loud:

  • Jacquie, owner of assistance dog Archie and assistance dog in training – and former Lost Dogs’ Home adoption dog – Ruby talks to us about how assistance dogs help her in the workplace.
  • Assistance Dogs Australia CEO Richard Lord talks to us about the work of assistance dogs and what is happening during Dogtober.
  • And, we give you the lowdown on the events happening around Melbourne this weekend!

If you would like to find out more about Assistance Dogs Australia, you can visit their website at assistancedogs.org.au
