What exactly are hate crimes? Do we need special laws to deal with hate crime, and why? Surely the crime is the same regardless of the motive, so why should the penalty be different?
New figures show hundreds of Victorians have been the target of racial, religious or sexual abuse, leading Victoria Police to call for tougher penalties for hate crimes.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp will be in the studio to explain what the police want and why.
We ask Greg Adkins of the Anti-Violence Project: Surely a bit of name calling on the street is harmless: why involve the police? Isn’t that going to create a lot of fuss and bother for you over something that’s basically just normal bad manners?
Associate Professor Gail Mason of the University of Sydney and former Director of the Sydney Institute of Criminology researches on racist and homophobic violence; hate crime law and punishment; and the legal construction of hatred. She describes hate crime as a moral as well as a legal category – what does that mean?
Above all we’ll be asking all our guests: do hate crime laws really work to make life better for the people – like LGBTI – they are meant to protect.
