Rainbow Report on The New Politics

News & Politics, Sexuality

Politics used to be pretty simple: you decided which broadly-based party you could live with, and signed on for their whole suite of policies, including those you didn’t agree with. If you could be bothered, you worked from within to change the bits you didn’t like. Labor & the Coalition are built on this model.

But it’s failing. Some would say it’s already failed. Instead, if politically-engaged people are joining parties at al – and many are not – they’re heading for minor parties. And personality parties like Katter and Palmer.

Most people now do their politics one issue at a time, organising slut walks, running petitions online, and so forth.

And then there’s the media: are they really as based as we think, and does it matter? Is anyone listening to them anymore?

To help us out tonight, we have Fiona Patten, the leader of the sex party, Dr Margaret Simons, Director of the Centre for Advancing Journalism, and Dr Folker Hanusch, media expert from the University of the Sunshine Coast, and of course my producer and cohost, James Newburrie.
