Nevena and Macca are joined live on the phone by Peter Kurti, Director of the Culture, Prosperity & Civil Society program and is also Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Law and Business at the University of Notre Dame Australia.

He has written extensively about issues of religion, liberty, culture and civil society in Australia, and appears frequently as a commentator on television and radio.

In addition to having written many newspaper articles, he is also the author or editor of a number of books, including The Tyranny of Tolerance: Threats to Religious Liberty in Australia; Euthanasia: Seven Questions about Voluntary Assisted DyingSacred & Profane: Faith and Belief in a Secular Society; and Beyond Belief: Rethinking the Voice to Parliament. Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an ordained minister in the Anglican Church of Australia.

In his most recent paper, Kurti, argues that, “that Australia’s democratic institutions must learn to manage, rather than resolve, deep moral disagreement. Building on the pluralist tradition of Isaiah Berlin, John Gray and Bernard Williams, this report contends that conflict between legitimate but incompatible values is a permanent feature of free societies. It warns against the illusion that political consensus can be achieved through neutrality, proceduralism or abstract ideals alone”.

“Liberal democracies must instead draw defensible lines — imperfect, contested, but necessary — that allow diverse groups to live together under common rules”.

Nevena and Macca spoke to Dr. Joel Scanlan, Snr Lecturer Uni of Tas. Cyber Security Expert; Will the Social Media Ban Actually Protect Aussie Kids?

Dr Scanlan is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania. He specialises in cybersecurity and privacy, having undertaken a PhD in the area, and has been teaching and consulting with the industry for over 15 years. He is also an adjunct Associate Professor in Maritime Cybersecurity at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. Joel is an active researcher on projects relating to child exploitation prevention, maritime cyber security, and machine learning.

Joel Scanlan is the academic co-lead of the CSAM Deterrence Centre, which is a partnership between the University of Tasmania and Jesuit Social Services, who operate Stop It Now (Australia), a therapeutic service providing support to people who are concerned with their own, or someone else’s, feelings towards children. Dr Scanlan has received funding from the Australian Research Council, Australian Institute of Criminology, the eSafety Commissioner, Lucy Faithfull Foundation and the Internet Watch Foundation.

“With the federal government’s ban on social media accounts for under-16s taking effect this week, as well as age assurance for logged-in search engine users on December 27 and adult content on March 9 2026, we have reached a landmark moment – but we must be clear about what this regulation achieves and what it ignores”, writes Dr Scanlan, in his latest article for the conversation.

“The ban may keep some children out (if they don’t circumvent it), but it does nothing to fix the harmful architecture awaiting them upon return. Nor does it take steps to modify the harmful behaviour of some adult users. We need meaningful change toward a digital duty of care, where platforms are legally required to anticipate and mitigate harm”

Nevena and Macca are joined live in the studio by Rachel Westaway, State Member for Prahran, and Glyn Lewis, Local Author Spotlight.

At the 2025 Prahran state by-election, Rachel Westaway was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly with a 13.4% two-party swing in her favour.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Greens MP Sam Hibbins following revelations of an extramarital affair with a staffer] and allegations of inappropriate behaviour toward an intern.

Westaway’s campaign was based on addressing “law-and-order” issues, including around the Chapel Street precinct.

At the time of her election, Westaway became the first Liberal candidate for a lower house seat across Australia to recover a seat from the Greens, after Prahran became the first lower house seat the Liberal Party had lost to the Greens, in 2014.

In October 2025, Westaway was appointed Shadow Assistant Minister for Small Business and Shadow Assistant Minister for Hospitality.

Following the change of leadership of the Victorian Liberal Party in November 2025 and subsequent Shadow Cabinet Shadow reshuffle, Westaway was appointed Shadow Assistant Minister to the Leader of the Opposition (Metropolitan), Shadow Assistant Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, and Shadow Assistant Minister for Melbourne.

Glyn Lewis, Melbourne based author, was born in the UK, he immigrated to Australia, with his family in 1966, when he was 9. After a long rewarding career in Hospitality Management he tired at the age of 60, when he was inspired to write his fist children’s book after watching a mother read to her child in a local library.

He started his literary journey at 62 years of age. Now 67 years old, he is passionate about early learning in young children and thought he could contribute and create early learning in a fun and positive way. He now has twenty-nine children’s books published of which he is very proud of.

His literary journey has taken a different direction as he is now writing Suspense Psychological Thrillers. One is successfully published titled The Bride of Fire- The Armageddon Awakens. Another novel that he is working on is currently in production.

His first reel, “How dumb are Aussies?” skewered the decisions of successive governments that he said allowed corporations to “rip off” Australia over its natural resources.

Kenny and Paul talk to Hugo Toovey, Founder of 25 STAY ALIVE!

Hugo Toovey is an Army Major in his early 30’s and already a two-time Cancer Survivor. He’s a tireless Mental Health Advocate and founder of 25 STAY ALIVE.
If you didn’t know Hugo, you would assume that he was your typical everyday young Australian. And yes,  from the outside, he appears to be exactly that. However, the last 10 years of his life has been everything BUT normal. He is missing a testicle, part of his reproductive system, all of his abdominal lymph nodes,
his large bowel, his rectum and part of his small bowel.

Not only has Hugo survived both testicular cancer and bowel cancer, but he has also had ongoing battles with his mental health. Yet despite all of this, he is more determined than ever to use what he has gone through to save lives.

Bruce Wolpe’s latest US commentary focuses on a second Trump term, highlighting concerns about the US becoming more authoritarian, his use of executive power, and the potential impact on international relations and Australia. He has recently discussed issues such as the escalating rhetoric from Trump, his challenges to democratic institutions, and potential shifts in US foreign policy regarding issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Everyone knew that once Congress passed legislation requiring the Justice Department to release all the Jeffrey Epstein files, US President Donald Trump would go on a tear to “flood the zone” with other distractions so he could command the agenda.

And that’s exactly what he did. Over the next four days, Trump met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the Oval Office to announce expedited visas for fans at next year’s World Cup (though, pointedly, not for all)”

Vicki Ward, as the Victorian Minister for Equality, was involved in the passing of an updated anti-vilification law in 2025. Key aspects of the update include making it easier for police to charge those who make hateful speech, lowering the threshold for criminal charges, and providing greater protection for the LGBTQIA+ community and people with a disability. The legislation removed a contentious defence for genuine political purposes after community concerns that it could be misused.

Victoria has become the first state in Australia to make it free for trans and gender diverse people to update their gender on their birth certificate following regulation changes made by the Allan Labor Government.

Minister for Government Services Natalie Hutchins today announced updates to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act (Fees) Regulations 2019 – making it free to update a record of sex on a birth certificate.

Previously, trans Victorians paid $140.40 to be issued a new birth certificate while people born outside Victoria paid $122 for a recognised details certificate. These fees have now been abolished.

In line with existing fee waiver policy, applications to change a name at the same time as a record of sex change will also be free, and certificate postage within Australia will be waived.

Birth certificates are an important identity document used when enrolling for study, opening bank accounts, applying for a drivers licence or passport, or accessing government services – yet only one third of trans and gender Victorians currently hold identity documents that reflect who they are.

By making it free, the Government is making sure cost is never a barrier to a person having an identity document that reflects who they are.

Following changes to the law in 2020, Victorians do not need to undergo surgery to change the sex recorded on their birth certificate.

The announcement follows Trans Awareness Week and Trans Day of Remembrance, acknowledging the achievements and challenges facing trans and gender diverse Australians.

For more information about how to change a record of sex, visit bdm.vic.gov.au/change-record-sex.

Rob Roelofs talks to Kenny and Macca about the latest Election from the Netherlands.
Rob was born in The Netherlands was active in council politics in The Netherlands and a member of the political party D66. Left 18 years ago to Australia with husband Nick.
They lived 7 years in Melbourne before moving to Sydney.
The next leader of the Netherlands will break barriers in several ways. Rob Jetten, the head of the center-left Democrats 66 Party, is virtually certain to become the country’s next prime minister after his party won one of the closest elections in Dutch history. The Netherlands’ youngest and first openly gay prime minister will look to carry D66’s electoral victory toward setting a new political agenda. But the razor-thin election margins mean this could be an uphill battle.

The culprits “ended up being teammates from my football team,” and the “rest of the world cast my village as a hotbed for far-right youths,” Jetten’s profile said. To counter this characterization, Jetten “teamed up with a few peers to prove everyone wrong, organizing various campaigns and speaking before the municipal council.” Jetten “worked as a manager at the ProRail national track network before going into politics,” said The Guardian. He was first elected to the House in 2017 and has held several government positions, including minister for climate and energy policy and first deputy prime minister.

The Seagull Patrol program:

Fed Square is introducing a new kind of workforce: the Seagull Patrol. Seven trained border collies and kelpies (and their proud local owners) will soon begin daily patrols to keep pesky gulls at bay, humanely, of course, as part of a six-month program starting 17 November.  The dogs will be patrolling Fed Square each day between 11am – 3pm.

The program is run by James Webb of Mad Dogs & Englishman, who’s been running the popular (and very effective) Seagull Patrol at the Sydney Opera House for several years. He’s in Melbourne this week to begin training his new recruits, with training running until the 11th.

This is the first time the program has been run in Melbourne. Mad Dogs & Englishmen has run a successful Seagull Patrol at the Sydney Opera House for a number of years.

Macca and Kenny are joined live in the studio by friend of the show, and Federal MP for Mcnamara, Josh Burns. Josh spoke about the passing of Baby Priya’s Bill and the latest updates from Federal Parliament.

The Fair Work Amendment (Baby Priya’s) Bill 2025, was passed on Monday, 3rd November, 2025 in  Federal Parliament, ensuring employer-funded paid parental leave protections are now enshrined in legislation for grieving parents experiencing the stillbirth or death of a child.

The amendment introduces a new principle into the Fair Work Act that unless employers and employees have expressly agreed otherwise, employer-funded paid parental leave must not be cancelled because a child is stillborn or dies.

This brings it in line with government-funded paid parental leave and unpaid parental leave.

The amendment upholds the ability of employers and employees to negotiate and agree terms and conditions which deal with the stillbirth or death of a child.

This Bill is named after Baby Priya who died when she was just 6 weeks old.

After informing her employer that her child had passed away, Priya’s mum was faced with grieving the loss of her child at the same time as having her parental leave cancelled and negotiating with her employer about an unplanned and unexpected return to work.

Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Amanda Rishworth said she wanted to pay heartfelt tribute to Baby Priya’s parents and family, whose courageous advocacy had helped ensure that no other family would have to endure what they went through.

“Their strength and determination have driven meaningful change and with Baby Priya’s Bill passing Parliament we can provide certainty for grieving parents and safeguard their financial security,” Minister Rishworth said.

Kenny Hill – executive performance coach at Redline Coaching, advertising agency founder, and co-producer of JOY94.9’s Saturday Magazine.

He brings over two decades of experience at the top of the advertising industry from London to Sydney and Melbourne, having led major multinational client business and founded one of Australia’s most successful independents, Akkomplice – an agency he built from scratch and sold after ten years of growth. Throughout his career, Kenny experienced first-hand the thrill and cost of high performance, coming close to burnout himself.

Now an ICF-accredited coach and certified NLP practitioner, Kenny works with ambitious men to help them achieve sustainable success without sacrificing their wellbeing. His powerful “Redlining” framework draws on a motorsport analogy to help men recognise the warning signs of physical and emotional overload — and learn how to shift gears before they crash.

Kenny speaks with the insight of someone who’s lived the highs and lows of leadership, and the grounded wisdom of someone who’s found a better way. Based in Melbourne with his partner and two beloved dogs, he credits them as the three loves of his life who help keep his own redlining tendencies in check. When he’s not coaching or consulting, Kenny can be found behind the mic at JOY as both co-producer and occasional host.

Kenny is joined by Sunday Arts presenter David Hunt for a lively chat with Ben Elton.

He’s written the most eagerly awaited show business autobiography of the year, and now he’s doing a book launch tour. That’s what.

To celebrate the release of What Have I Done?, Ben Elton will be interviewed live on stage – by comedian HG Nelson in Australia – to share stories from his extraordinary life and career.

From The Young Ones and Blackadder to We Will Rock You and Upstart Crow, Ben has helped shape the cultural landscape for over four decades — and now, for the first time, he’s telling it all.

This live event will see Ben dive deep into his life’s most revealing moments: the behind-the-scenes triumphs and chaos, the personal and professional highs and lows, the revolution in stand-up comedy, and that ever-present ‘little bit of politics’.

Known for his sharp wit, boundless energy, and unflinching honesty, Ben holds nothing back as he reflects on sixty-five years of life, laughter, and the occasional controversy.

Whether you’ve followed him since Saturday Live, or only just discovered Upstart Crow, this is your chance to hear the stories that didn’t make the press — live, unscripted, and utterly unforgettable.

Fiona and Macca are joined live in the studio by Adrian D’Mello, Financial Advisor at BG Private, Aged Care Specialist, has been a Financial Advisor for more than 15 years.

He started his career at an industry super fund at the peak of the GFC, helping members navigate those challenging times. He then joined one of Australia’s Big 4 banks as a Financial Advisor and then spent several years in regional Victoria where he predominantly advised farming clients.

Adrian D’Mello is an experienced professional who guides clients throughout the various stages of their financial lives. Younger professionals wanting to set themselves up for lifelong financial security. Pre-retirees who want to maximise the final years of their working lives to ensure they have sufficient funds to enjoy retirement. Retirees who want to enjoy the fruits of their labour while knowing their finances are in order.

In addition, Adrian is an Aged Care specialist, helping families navigate the complex aged care landscape. This includes matters relating to the cost of care, Centrelink, managing assets like the family home, and ensuring adequate cash flow.

It is rare to find an advisor who can also provide advice regarding Defined Benefit Schemes and complex structured investments.

His clients appreciate his patience and understanding nature. He takes the time to understand each client’s individual needs and recommend the best strategy to maximise their personal circumstance.

When not advising clients, Adrian has a wide circle of friends and an even wider set of interests. He has an impressive whisky collection and loves hiking in the Dandenongs. He’s also a vocal supporter – with reasonable expectations – of the Essendon Football Club, which is not for the faint-hearted!

Fiona and Macca are joined live in the studio by Dying with Dignity Advocate Dr Nic Carr.

Nick trained at Cambridge University and in London before moving to Melbourne in 1988. He wrote his master’s thesis on antibiotic prescribing and has sat on numerous committees and writing groups dealing with appropriate medication use.

Nick is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Melbourne University, and continues to give talks and lectures on a wide variety of health topics.

Nick was one of the first GPs in Victoria trained to provide Voluntary Assisted Dying care (VAD) care and is happy to take referrals for this. He is a Board member of Dying with Dignity Victoria.

Nick has extensive media experience. For 3 years he presented health stories on ABC television with Jill Singer and George Negus, and subsequently did a weekly radio segment with Steve Vizard. He can often be heard on RRR radio on Sunday mornings (102.7 FM, “Radiotherapy”, 10-11 am), and Tuesday evenings on ABC Radio Melbourne (774 AM, with David Astle, he of the impossible crossword fame; “Writs and Cures”, 8-9 pm). He can also be found every Friday and Sunday on TV, on Channel 7’s House Of Wellness.

Nick received the inaugural Division award for ‘significant contribution to General Practice in 1998, and Melbourne University’s Outstanding GP Term Teacher award in 2018.

Nick’s first book,“What Happens Now? The essential book for first-time fathers” was published by ACER in 2012. Sadly it is now sold out, so you’ll have to go to the library or scour the second-hand shops.

Kyriakos Gold has a long-standing commitment with Sydney Gay Lesbian Mardi Gras. With a diverse background as an Autistic, nonbinary, culturally and linguistically diverse individual, underpins Kyriakos’  decision to serve on the Board.  I’ve been involved with SGLMG for over 20 years as a volunteer, researcher, consultant, and now an incumbent Board member.

Kyriakos’   drive is to foster a just and inclusive world, offering equal opportunities for all. In my work with various non-profit boards, Kyriakos’  focus on smart planning, raising the voices of those less heard, and connecting with key stakeholders to enact change.

Dr Charles Livingstone – Assoc Prof, School of Public Health & Preventive Medicine, Monash

Charles is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. His principal research interests are in gambling as a public health issue, social theory of gambling, ethics of gambling research and reform of gambling regulation.
He joins Paul and Kenny to discuss the extent of the gambling problem in Australia and what can be done about it.
Listeners who are concerned about their own problems with gambling – or on behalf of a friend of family member are encouraged to reach out to the National Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 or visit gamblinghelponline.org.au for support.
Charles’s latest article ‘is a 6 point plan to ease gambling problems in Australia.
“Wagering (betting on sport, racing and even elections), is now mainly online, and reaps another $8.4 billion in Australia. This is the fastest growing gambling sector, with growth, adjusted for inflation, of more than 45% between 2018-19 and 2022-23.Pokies grew by a more modest 7.6% during the same period. Only casinos went backwards.

Overall, gambling costs Australians more than $32 billion annually.

This has been fuelled by relentless promotion and marketing and the expansion of the gambling ecosystem: the network of commercial actors who reap a major dividend from gambling losses.

It includes the bookies, pub and club chains as well as sporting leagues, financial services providers, software and game developers, charitable organisations, broadcasters, and state and territory governments”.

Alida Milani has been working in and contributing to the fashion industry for over 20 years’ operating across a diverse range of platforms and projects alongside a multitude of partners – from government to Australian designers, fashion brands and retailers. Initiating her fashion career in Milan, Alida went on to work extensively in fashion show production and event management to showcase creativity. With this deeper understanding of the local landscape, Alida now works to develop initiatives that not only respond to the sector’s complex challenges but spotlight its unique strengths. A key focus is building strategic initiatives that celebrate local excellence and support innovation, believing that when we value and celebrate our local makers, designers, educators, and entrepreneurs, and when we work together as a collective, we can build a more innovative and future-focused fashion industry.

The Artisanal Revolution brings together voices from fashion, technology, and design to explore why independent artists and makers are essential to the future of fashion. Hosted by Alida Milani during Melbourne Fashion Week, the session looks at how innovation can sustain and amplify craft, not replace it.

How the gov’s faring with implementing social media ban, how tech giants are responding and what will success actually look like?

“Teenagers are already preparing to thwart Australia’s teen social media ban, using platforms like TikTok to share ideas about how to trick platforms into letting them stay and sourcing alternative apps.

With two months to go until the government’s “social media minimum age” or “delay” policy set to come into effect, teenagers are already making moves, including claiming their accounts are actually being run by their parents, to stay on the platforms — despite a requirement that companies take “reasonable steps” to restrict access”.

Joining Macca and Kenny in the studio IS Simon Ruth,  is standing down as CEO of Thorne Harbour Health, after joining the then Vic AIDS Council as CEO 12 years

After more than a decade of leading Thorne Harbour Health, Simon Ruth has announced he will step down as Chief Executive Officer next month.

‘Ruth, who first joined THH in 2013, when was still known as the Victorian AIDS council (VAC) has been at the forefront of expanding its scope from HIV prevention and support to a broader focus on the health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ communities across Victoria, South Australia, and beyond’

‘Under his leadership, Thorne Harbour evolved from being Melbourne’s leading community response to HIV into a multi-faceted health service that addresses mental health, family violence, and alcohol and other drug use within queer communities. His tenure saw the establishment of regional and interstate services — from the Bendigo-based Thorne Harbour Country service in 2016, to the SAMESH partnership in South Australia — ensuring that people outside metropolitan areas also had access to affirming, community-led care’.

Macca and Paul are joined live on air by Mitch Brown, Former West Coast Eagles Defender, “Calling People In, Not Out”; the first openly LGBTIQA+ past or present AFL Men’s Player in history.

Two weeks ago, former West Coast Eagles defender Mitch Brown and his partner, Lou Keck, posted a statement on social media responding to an onslaught of hate they had been on the receiving end of, including death threats.

Just over a month prior, Brown was thrust into the spotlight when he came out as the first openly bisexual man in AFL history. It was a moment that transcended the Australian sporting community, particularly amongst young people.

In the five weeks that followed, the 36-year-old became somewhat of an unofficial spokesperson for queer issues within the AFL community.

While Brown said the experience has been overwhelmingly positive for the most part, there have been times it has been exhausting and lonely.

He made national headlines in late September after he posted to his Instagram stories that “any form of homophobia” was “loser behaviour” while referencing Geelong player Bailey Smith’s social media captions during the club’s Mad Monday celebrations. This sparked a mountain of pushback.

With his close to 10 years of experience within the AFL, including being at costume parties where gay jokes were casually thrown around, he wanted to continue the conversation about the wider impact of those quips and gags.

Before entering Parliament, Tim was a doctor treating and researching sexually transmitted infections like HIV. Before that, he was a GP.

Concerned by recent fires and heatwaves, Tim wanted to push the government to take climate change seriously by urgently replacing coal and gas as Victoria’s main energy sources. This is what prompted him to run for Parliament.

The priorities Tim has for his community are safer roads for walking and cycling, more green space, and trees to keep us cool in summer. He says that we also need to repair some of our crumbling public schools and build or buy more housing for our homeless.

Tim’s vision for Victoria’s future is that it runs by clean energy by the end of the decade, and cuts carbon emissions from farming, transport and other sectors.

The areas of public policy that he is most passionate about are reducing the size of the public housing waiting list and our prison population. He also wants to change the way we let advertisers promote unhealthy products such as junk food, alcohol and gambling.

Jane Goodall, the famed primatologist, anthropologist and conservationist, has died, according to the institute she founded. She was 91 years old.

Goodall died of natural causes while in California on a speaking tour of the United States, the institute said in a statement on social media on Wednesday.

“Dr. Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world,” according to the institute.

The British primatologist was scheduled to speak Wednesday at an event in Pasadena, California, to students from the surrounding area. A video message Goodall recorded ahead of the event was played instead, in which she shared her thoughts on the environment and youth empowerment.

“I’ve been working on trying to make this a better world for animals, people, and the environment, flat out, since 1986, and one of my greatest reasons for hope in this battered world is the youth,” she said.

She also offered advice for others about being mindful in their everyday lives.

“Think about our ecological footprint,” she said. “I think the … key thing is to realize that every day on this planet, you make a difference, and if you start thinking about the consequences of the small choices you make — What you buy? Where did it come from? How was it made? Was there child slave labor [involved]? Did it help the environment? Would you eat it if it didn’t involve cruelty to animals? — you start thinking like that, and millions of people around the world thinking like that, then we start to get the kind of world that we cannot be too embarrassed to leave to our children.”

Goodall was only 26 years old when she first traveled to Tanzania and began her important research on chimpanzees in the wild. Throughout her study of the species, Goodall proved that primates display an array of similar behaviors to humans, such as the ability to develop individual personalities, and could make and use their own tools.

Sally and Macca are joined live on air by Bruce Wolpe, a Senior Fellow (non-resident) at the United States Studies Centre.

Bruce is a contributor on US politics to Sky News Australia, appearing regularly across its programs and for breaking news. In recent years, Bruce has worked with the Democrats in Congress during President Barack Obama’s first term, and on the staff of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. He has also served as the former PM’s chief of staff.

He is author of a new book, The Committee, a study of President Obama’s legislative agenda in Congress (University of Michigan Press, 2018). From 1998-2009, Bruce was a senior executive at Fairfax Media in Sydney. He is also the author of Lobbying Congress: How The System Works (Congressional Quarterly Books, 1990, 1996).

His new book is TRUMP’S AUSTRALIA: How Trumpism Changed Australia and the Shocking Consequences For Us Of A Second Term. (Allen & Unwin 2023).

In his most recent article discusses Kamala Harri’s new memoir and who her ideal Vice-President would have been.

https://theconversation.com/kamala-harris-candid-memoir-reveals-her-ideal-vice-president-and-why-she-thinks-she-lost-266047

Book review: 107 Days” – Kamala Harris (Simon & Schuster)

The first chapter, Sunday July 21, covers the day Joe Biden – who disintegrated before our eyes in his catastrophic debate with Trump – withdrew from the race, with no road to victory.

He did want to endorse Harris, but “not for a day, maybe two”. She told him that would be “ruinous”. She argued that she was not just “the candidate in the strongest position to win”, but “the only person” who would preserve Biden’s legacy. “At this point, anyone else was bound to throw him – and all the good he had achieved – under the bus.”

It takes courage to write about such an agonising, devastating defeat – after an historic, exhilarating campaign – so quickly and so personally. Memoirs are rarely written this quickly. (We are still waiting, five years later, for the second volume of Barack Obama’s memoirs.)

In writing this book, she got by with a little help from a “special friend”: Pulitzer prize winning Australian author Geraldine Brooks. Harris’ acknowledgements note her deep appreciation of working with Brooks, whose “ferocious and brilliant artistic insights were indispensable.”

Macca and the gang talk to Will Sergeant OAM – South Australian Queer Activist and Historian, 50 YEARS of Legal Homosexuality, South Australia

Will Sergeant OAM considers his visibility as an out and proud gay man for over 50 years to be his greatest achievement.

“Since the heady days of 1970s gay liberation, I’ve believed in the importance of visibility and affirmation. I have striven to live the mantras ‘Come Out. The Personal is Political’, both as myself and as my alter-ego Dr Gertrude Glossip.”

“For over a quarter of a century our history walks have informed a broad audience about Adelaide’s queer history. It has been satisfying to publish these walks as a book.”

“Being a member of a minority group brings with it the responsibility of engagement and activism. I delight in educating an audience in an entertaining way.”

Mr Sergeant is so pleased that his work as a queer activist and historian is considered important and warrants the award of a Medal of the Order of Australia.

He thanks Tim Reeves, the late John Lee and the late Ian Purcell AM – fellow activists and historians; Sisters Anni, Susie and the late Jan, and long-time friend John Pumpa – all long-time supporters.

Will can talk to you about the recent 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in SA

– Do we need a DOGE in Australia?;
– What do the Liberals need to do to become a serious opposition?;
– What can we expect from the final season of Real Politicians of Canberra 2025?!

“Wisconsin senator Joseph McCarthy’s career was stalling by February 1950. He had managed to ride his tireless ambition, powerful oratory and a habitual looseness with the truth — an injury sustained falling off a ladder was repurposed as a “war wound” — past three-term incumbent Robert Marion La Follette Jr into the Senate in 1946. But his quick temper and lack of regard for the established rules of conduct had left him isolated”

Macca and Nevena talk to Konrad Benjamin, Podcaster, Punter’s Politics, the 58th Commonwealth Parliament, Winter Ball, and what it’s like being a Political Punter

Konrad launched Punter’s Politics about one year ago, starting with satirical skits uploaded to social media and YouTube that cited reputable resources.

His first reel, “How dumb are Aussies?” skewered the decisions of successive governments that he said allowed corporations to “rip off” Australia over its natural resources.

It compared Australia’s Petroluem Resource Rent Tax forecast for the 2022-23 financial year ($2.6 billion) to that of Qatar’s energy export tax expectations that year ($76b) and Norway’s take ($133.8b) in the year to December 2023, despite Australia being among the world’s biggest natural gas exporters.

The reel quickly went viral and amassed two million views on Instagram until it was removed by the platform with little explanation.

Konrad reposted it and says it has now been seen five million times on YouTube and other platforms.

He has since uploaded dozens of reels targeting everything from the Australian Taxation Office to the Australian Passport Office, offshore investment in property during a housing crisis, and the country’s private healthcare model.

“I’m presenting what I think to be the important politics, what politics ought to be,” Konrad said.

“We all agree on 80 per cent of stuff, but we’re fed the 20 per cent of division, the culture war rubbish that corporations want us talking about.

“Because as long as we’re doing that, we’re distracted from the things and the issues that everyone agrees on that would massively change our lives.”

If Konrad’s rapid growth in followers — who he says are mostly “tradies and millennials” — is anything to go by, a lot of people feel the same way.

In less than 12 months he has amassed about 330,000 followers on Instagram, set up a website and a podcast that has been joined by several politicians, and has “patreons” backing him financially.

He has also raised more than $80,000 to erect billboards across the country ahead of the federal election — a move that is sure to cause a few headaches for all sides of government — as he continues to highlight Australia’s comparatively small gas royalties.

Macca and Nevena talk to Vicki Ward, MP Eltham and Minister for Equality: Update Anti-Vilification Laws

The Allan Labor Government is backing a new helpline to support LGBTIQA+ Victorians targeted by homophobic violence.

In August, Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Equality Vicki Ward  announced the new service will be delivered by Switchboard Victoria through its Rainbow Door helpline, providing free and confidential support from trained LGBTIQA+ professionals.

The service will give people with clear advice on their rights, how to report incidents to police, and connect them with medical, legal and counselling services – all in a safe environment.

It follows a series of recent assaults where perpetrators used dating apps to target the LGBTIQA+ communities, particularly men.

The Labor Government’s Anti-Hate Taskforce will also hear directly from LGBTIQA+ Victorians about the violent attacks in its next meeting – because everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and represented as we work together to reject hate in all its forms.

All Rainbow Door staff are trained in trauma-informed practice, ensuring survivors are supported with compassion and dignity, perpetrators are held to account, and individuals are empowered with knowledge and choice.

Switchboard has worked with Thorne Harbour Health, Q+Law, Victoria Police and other community partners to build a strong support network. Referral options will also include the Victims Support Agency and sexual assault services.

Nevena and Macca are joined by Lydia Jupp from the Star Observer as they discuss footage of fracking sites in background of RuPaul’s DJ sets this  week, reignites criticism of drag star’s environmental practices.

A decade ago, no one would have associated the world’s most famous drag queen with the toxic extraction technique, but ever since he revealed he and his husband were “leasing mineral rights to oil companies” on their massive Wyoming ranch in a 2020 appearance on NPR’s Fresh Air (ironic), “RuPaul fracks” has become a commonplace meme in queer culture.

Uploaded to TikTok, the video shows Ru DJing at Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau on Saturday, with footage of what appears to be an oil-exploration site as his set’s background.

Fiona and Macca talk to Not Drowning, Waving’s David Bridie.

The first time David Bridie left Australia was to travel to Papua New Guinea.

This trip, taken in 1986, when Bridie was in his early 20s, marked the beginning of a lifelong connection to the island nation and its music.

By this time, Bridie, the leader of Not Drowning, Waving, was already established on the Australian music scene. But his friendship with Papua New Guinean musician George Telek (aka Telek) would become career-defining.

Bridie and Telek’s bond laid the groundwork for Not Drowning, Waving’s fifth album, Tabaran, which is now 35 years old. Tabaran features prominent contributions from not just Telek but various other musicians who frequented the Pacific Gold Studios in Rabaul, including Pius Wasi and Emmanuel and Ben Hakalitz.

These musicians will all join Bridie and the rest of Not Drowning, Waving to celebrate the album’s 35th birthday, as well as the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence, at Melbourne Recital Centre on Saturday 20 September.
