Macca and Fiona talk to Matteo Vergani. Associate Prof, Deakin University; Antisemitism Special Envoy;

The Albanese government has named Jewish lawyer and businesswoman Jillian Segal as the county’s first antisemitism special envoy. The appointment was made in response to rising incidents of violence against Jewish people against the backdrop of the Gaza war. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government would also soon appoint an Islamophobia special envoy.

Antisemitism special envoys are not an invention of the Albanese government. They exist in many countries, including Canada, the United States and Germany.

In Australia, the antisemitism envoy’s responsibilities will likely include recommending stronger anti-vilification laws and better reporting of hate crimes. This will also likely include better support for hate crime victims, leading education and advocacy activities to combat anti-Jewish sentiment, and attending international conferences to discuss antisemitism with other global envoys. The envoy will report directly to the prime minister and the minister for immigration, citizenship and multicultural affairs.

Nevena and Macca talk to Alex McKinnon, journalist, on ALP Senator Fatima Payman, Crossing the Floor over Palestine.

The first-time senator became the first federal Labor politician to cross the floor in 18 years;

A senior Labor figure has ruled out the expulsion and suspension of first-time West Australian senator Fatima Payman after she voted against the government on a Greens motion recognising the statehood of Palestine.

On Tuesday afternoon, the 29-year-old defied her colleagues and became the first Labor member to cross the floor in 18 years.

While her move risked expulsion or suspension from the ALP, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said neither of these sanctions would be applied to Senator Payman.

“This is a difficult issue. Fatima has made clear that she continues to maintain her Labor values, that she wants to represent the people of WA in the Senate as a Labor senator, as she was elected at the last election … There won’t be any expulsions or any activity of that kind,” he told the ABC on Wednesday morning.

“Australia’s eSafety commissioner has obtained a Federal Court injunction to force the removal of harmful content from X, formerly known as Twitter.

The notice required X to take all reasonable steps to ensure the removal of the extremely violent video content of the alleged terrorist act at Wakeley in Sydney on April 15.

The commissioner issued a removal notice for video and images of the attack on April 16. X 0wner and noted “free speech absolutist” Elon Musk responded to these requests by calling the esafety commissioner the “Australian Censorship Commissar”, and refusing to make any changes”.

Fiona and Misha Ketchell, , The Editor, The Conversation: :Meta (Facebook) VS Australian Media

Last week we learnt that Facebook (Meta) is getting out of the news business to avoid paying for journalism under the Australian Government’s News Media Bargaining Code. Naturally as journalists we are disappointed – jobs will go – but no one is surprised. Facebook is doing what it has always done, which is to pursue its interests ruthlessly.

For over a decade Facebook courted the Australian media, now it has tossed it aside. Its conduct brings to mind the old fable of the scorpion and the frog. The scorpion wants to get to the other side of the river and asks a frog to carry it. The frog agrees, even though it fears the scorpion will sting. Halfway into the crossing, the scorpion stings the frog. It is in my nature, the scorpion explains.

So it is with Facebook, which convinced Australia’s media that it was a good idea to produce high-quality content and put it on Facebook for free. When ACCC chairman Rod Sims came up with a plan to make Facebook pay, out came the stinger. Facebook removed news from its Australian platform and threatened to withdraw from publishing news altogether. (It’s currently using the same tactic in Canada to avoid similar laws.)

In some markets Facebook’s popularity is waning, but it persists because it is engineered to be addictive – just like smoking and arguably as toxic. A few years ago whistleblower Frances Haugen claimed Facebook knew its products were harmful but it put profits above user safety. That was just the tip of the iceberg.

Facebook has a well-documented history of allowing hate, threats and misinformation to flourish. It also allowed Cambridge Analytica to scrape data from tens of millions of users and use it to aid political candidates, including Donald Trump. Profiting from misinformation and disinformation is core to its business model. The campaign of character assassination on Facebook against the Philippines-based journalist Maria Ressa speaks volumes about the company’s commitment to journalism, journalists’ safety and human rights.

A few years ago, Facebook flatly refused to pay SBS and The Conversation for journalism under Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code. We were disappointed – the money would have allowed us to produce more fact-based journalism written by experts to inform public discourse. It could have helped us in our mission to use facts and evidence to bring people together at a time when the half-truths and propaganda circulating on social media are tearing them apart. It would have helped Facebook show it cared about fighting misinformation.

But perhaps we dodged a bullet. The Albanese government now has the option of “designating” Facebook under the News Media Bargaining Code to force it to pay for journalism. If it were to do so, there’s a very slim chance Facebook would pay up. More likely it would just pack up and go home.

Either way we’d be better off. As journalist Peter Greste wrote in his analysis for The Conversation last weekend “Meta’s interests are not the same as our democracy’s. Meta doesn’t need high-quality news, particularly if its users are more interested in sharing family photos than sober reporting on inflation rates. But collectively, our society does need it.”

In Australian law there is a concept known as “unconscionable conduct” that describes people who trick others into believing something for profit. It’s not a bad description of what Facebook did to the Australian media over the past decade. It’s what it will continue to do to communities around the world – it’s in its nature.

So what can you do? Encourage anyone who gets their news from Facebook or Instagram to sign up to a reputable news service. The Conversation‘s daily newsletter is free and a good place to start. We also have specialist weekly newsletters, including Science WrapBooks & Ideas and New Zealand Weekly. Or if you are reading us on your desktop at home or work, bookmark our homepage.

In Australia, at least, we don’t have to give the scorpion a free ride.

National LGBTIQ+ group Equality Australia says it’s disgraceful an adoption agency refused to consider placing an Aboriginal baby in the care of her maternal aunt because she was in a same-sex relationship.  According to media reports of the case before the Children’s Court, the Anglicare service provider did not even assess the aunt as a suitable carer and placed her instead with a non-Indigenous heterosexual couple.

“We cannot have a situation where the laws in NSW allow the lives and wellbeing of children to be jeopardised by the outdated prejudice of a faith-based service provider contracted by government to do its bidding,” said Legal Director of Equality Australia Ghassan Kassisieh.

“It is disgraceful that Anglicare would put discrimination before considering the interests of a child in remaining connected to their First Nations’ culture and community.

“It is cases like this that prove the urgency of the reforms that are currently before parliament as part of Independent MP Alex Greenwich’s Equality Bill.”  NSW is one of several states and territories in Australia that have legal loopholes allowing faith-based service providers and religious schools to discriminate against students, staff and people who rely on their services because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Mr Kassisieh said Anglicare’s policy, as stated on its website, was to refuse to assess same-sex couples to be adoptive parents.

“Especially when a service provider is effectively acting as an agent of the government they should not be allowed to legally discriminate on the basis of someone’s sexuality,” he said.

“This is clearly out of line with community expectations in 2024.

“We call for the urgent removal of loopholes that allow this type of blatant discrimination to continue in NSW. Everyone should be judged on their merits not their sexuality or gender identity, and the prejudice of a provider cannot have precedence over considerations regarding the best interests of the child.”

Macca and Nevena talk to Matteo Vergani PhD Asso. Prof. Deakin Uni. Impact of Hate Crimes on Victim, a new study finds more harm in hate crimes – especially crimes based on disability, gender, and sexual orientation.

A recent study titled “Revisiting the Harm of Hate: A Quasi-Experimental Approach Using the National Crime Victimization Survey” delves into the longstanding question: Do hate crimes inflict more harm than other types of crimes? Utilising data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (2010–2020), the research employs advanced statistical methods, including propensity scores and inverse-probability weighting, to explore this issue.

While previous studies have indicated that victims of hate crimes often suffer greater physical and emotional harm than victims of non-biased crimes, these findings have been inconsistent, influenced by various factors like the characteristics of victims and offenders, the motivation for the crime, and the circumstances of the crime itself. This study aims to address these disparities and provide a more nuanced understanding of the impact of hate crimes.

The two girls – described as “like sisters” – were found dead on the side of the Mitchell highway, next to a crashed ute, in the early hours of December 6, 1987.

White man Ian Alexander Grant, who is deceased but was 40 at the time, was found with his arm draped across the body of Cindy, who was bare chested and partially naked.

He was subsequently found not guilty of drink driving causing death by an all-white jury in 1990, with a further charge of interfering with a corpse being dropped on the eve of the trial.

Macca and Fiona are joined live in the studio by Josh Burns MP, McNamara and Misha Ketchell, Editor the Conversation, as they break down the Voice to parliament referendum.

Some of the questions raised in this conversation:

                                                          Voice response
Indigenous groups who supported the Voice campaign ended their week of
silence, accusing Australians who voted “No” of committing “a shameful act
whether knowingly or not, and there is nothing positive to be interpreted
from it”.

● In an open letter to the prime minister issued on Sunday evening, the groups said “that people who came to our country in only the last 235
years would reject the recognition of this continent’s First Peoples — on our sacred land which we have cared for and nurtured for more
than 65,000 years — is so appalling and mean-spirited as to be utterly unbelievable”

● The letter attributed the historic referendum loss to a lack of bipartisan support, as well as “lies in political advertisement and
communication” and racism

● “The proposal was tracking 60% support compared to 40% opposition for several years until the National and Liberal parties
preferred wanton political damage over support for some of this country’s most disadvantaged people,” the letter added (The
Guardian)

● Some Aboriginal leaders are understood to have distanced themselves from an earlier draft of the statement, circulated among
about 50 Indigenous people and organisations, and did not want their names associated with it (SMH)

● The official statement moderates the criticisms of that draft version, removing sections accusing Indigenous “No” leaders Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, Senator                                                              Kerrynne Liddle and Nyunggai Warren,  Mundine of being “front people for three right-wing organisations”, along with criticism of News Corp (The Age)
● Also removed was praise for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s “gallantry” in defeat as well as criticism for his failure to blame “No”voters
● There was little reflection on where the “Yes” campaign could have done better, amid separate revelations some within Labor thought “it was chaotically organised, its                                                  messaging verbose and imprecise, that it too often appealed to the converted” (The Saturday Paper)
● Leading “Yes” campaigner Thomas Mayo has tried to glean some positives, arguing that “though the referendum failed, the movement
for Indigenous rights and recognition has grown” (The Saturday Paper).

● But results maps very well to the result of the republic referendum in 1999
● Strong correlation between education/wealth and propensity to vote Yes
● Do we need to improve civics education?
● Is meaningful or progressive change possible in our system?

Macca, Isaac and Paul talk to Dion Alexander, finalist Mr. Gay Pride 2022, about the change.org petition to eradicate Homophobia from the AFL.

“Homophobic language should be considered and treated as seriously as racial and any other form of vilification. Additionally, social media has become a breeding ground for homophobic language and slander, making it an unsafe space for LGBTIQA+ community members.

Homophobic derogatory language is tragically commonplace in our game. Research reveals a chronic use of homophobic language at all levels of AFL, from junior football to elite tiers, permeating among spectators too:

  • 73% of teenage Aussie Rules (amateur AFL) players aged 16 to 20 reported hearing homophobic slurs from teammates in the past month.
  • 43% of adult male VFL and Aussie Rules players admitted to using homophobic slurs with teammates in the past two weeks.
  • 62% of LGBTQ+ fans have witnessed verbal homophobia or transphobia at an AFL game.

The AFL, Clubs, Players Association, Fans Association, State Leagues, and grassroots football clubs need to actually live up to its title as the people’s game by embracing diversity and inclusivity in its fullest capacity. It’s time for the AFL to take a stand against the ostensibly normalized homophobic culture within the sport so Australian Rules football is a safe and inclusively welcoming environment for players, staff, volunteers, and fans.

As a collective of LGBTIQA+ supporter groups, we are calling on the AFL to:

  • Implement mandatory diversity and inclusion training in every club for all players, and staff including security, game day staff, and administrators.
  • Review and strengthen the current anti-discrimination policies within the league, including strict reprimands for offenders.
  • Actively promote a culture of acceptance and support for equality in the sport, from the grassroots levels up to the elite tiers.
  • An option for AFL clubs to opt-in for their men’s team to participate in a pride game from 2024 onwards once the club and playing group have conducted in-house training and are ready to actively and positively participate, working towards a full pride round of all 18 clubs by no later than 2026″.
