Nominations have opened for the 2025 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards. Do you know an LGBTQIA+ elder who deserves to be platformed?

For more than 30 years, the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards have celebrated the contributions and achievements of older Victorians.

Platforming people over 60 who share their skills, time and energy with the community.

This year, the awards include a new category, the Emerging Impact Award.

Recognising an individual who is new to volunteering and is making a significant impact in their local community.

For decades, we’ve heard that elders in our LGBTQIA+ community were stepping back into the closet.

But over the past decade, something has changed.

Our elder LGBTQIA+ community have come together to celebrate and elevate their voices.

And with the support of the Victorian Government continue to shine for all their worth, no matter their age.

Max Primmer is a vibrant force in Victoria’s LGBTQIA+ community who doesn’t just challenge stereotypes about ageing, he rewrites the rulebook.

He is a proud radio host, drag queen, community connector, and fierce advocate for inclusive ageing.

Celebrated throughout our regional communities, Max is a volunteer, a mentor, and a truly beautiful human,  proving that age is no barrier.

Max was the 2023 Ageing Well Award recipient for the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

A moment he counts as “probably the most exciting thing that I’ve had happen to me.”

A co-founding Director of Tanck, Angus brings with him a significant understanding of the political process and executive functions of government. Having worked directly to minsters as a policy and political advisor, Angus understands the inner workings of government decision making and brings this knowledge and understanding with him to every engagement.

Angus spent the better part of his ministerial career working within the social portfolios of education, communities, disability services and seniors, as well as being an advisor within an economic super portfolio covering infrastructure, agriculture, trade, and tourism. In these portfolios he worked on small grants schemes through to major infrastructure programs and bilateral agreements of more than $4billion. Angus also spent time working through the process for State budget bids as well as bilateral agreements between the States and Commonwealth governments, often liaising directly with parliamentarians from government and the opposition.

Since leaving politics, Angus has worked with a variety of social sector and purpose-led organisations and leaders, supporting them to create and embed systems for effective government engagement and advocacy. Angus has experience supporting clients in every state and jurisdiction in Australia, having helped clients achieve sector firsts in the delivery of ministerial policy statements through to improved funding certainty and associated outcomes. Underpinning these successes is Angus’ ability to connect with people, understand their mission, and work alongside them to accomplish their goals and objectives.

LEARN MORE Under the same Moon intricately weaves together the lives of a family, their sons, and the men of the battalion they join, all set against the backdrop of a bygone Australia during World War II. This compelling historical narrative breathes life into the people and places of the era, immersing readers in a vivid sense of immediacy and intimacy.
Drawing extensively from unpublished and previously unseen written accounts, oral histories, letters, and archival materials, Under the same Moon offers a deeply personal exploration of the lesser-known Australian campaign in the Middle East. It captures the dramatic separation of a group of men from their Australia-bound convoy and their arrival in Java, teetering on the brink of collapse. The narrative also illuminates the fears and anxieties of families left in the dark.
This unforgettable story of love, camaraderie, bravery, and courage is laced with humour, suffering, and beauty. Through its rich narrative, Under the same Moon invites readers to experience the profound human connections forged in times of turmoil.

LEARN MORE Having worked directly to minsters as a policy and political advisor, Angus understands the inner workings of government decision making and brings this knowledge and understanding with him to every engagement.
A proud member and advocate of the LGBTIQ+ community, Angus was Co-Convenor of Rainbow Labor in Queensland before making the move to Sydney. Angus’ personal journey, coupled with his experience working in social portfolios supporting marginalised and disadvantaged Australians, engendered within him a deep and enduring sense of compassion and empathy. Angus is driven by these experiences and is highly motivated by the work he does to support the important social and societal change being driven by his clients.

LEARN MORE He is known worldwide for his 2014 arrest and subsequent jailing on terrorism charges whilst working for Al Jazeera in Egypt. He was released after 400 days of imprisonment.
His ordeal has been made into The Correspondent, starring Richard Roxburgh, released in cinemas this week and garnering huge critical acclaim.

Professor Peter Greste is an award-winning journalist, author and academic who spent fifteen years with the BBC before he joined Al Jazeera as East Africa correspondent. In 2013, he went to Egypt to help cover the unfolding political crisis but two weeks into the assignment, security agents raided his hotel room and arrested him and two colleagues. They were charged with terrorism offences, and in the subsequent trial they became champions of press freedom. All three were eventually convicted and sentenced to between seven and 10 years in prison, before being released under intense international pressure.
Peter saw his trial and conviction as an extreme example of the way journalism was being attacked in the War on Terror globally, and wrote about his experience in The First Casualty, He joined the University of Queensland as UNESCO Chair in Journalism and Communication in 2018 where he continues to campaign for the freedom of journalists.
In honour of his campaigning, Peter has been given numerous awards including a Walkely (2014); the British Royal Television Society’s Judges Award (2015); the Australian Human Rights Council Medal (2016); the RSL’s ANZAC Peace Prize (2016); and the Australian Press Council’s Press Freedom Medal (2018).

LEARN MORE Son picks  up on the recent ruling in UK High Court which we also discussed a bit last week with Anna Brown from Equality  Australia  after the Forum broadcast. The implications are less clear and unfolding daily.

In a blow for transgender people, the UK’s highest court has said that a woman is defined by her sex at birth.

JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series and a prominent anti-trans activist, has said the ruling was due to “an army” of female campaigners and had protected the “rights of women and girls”.
But Britain’s Supreme Court stressed laws preventing discrimination against people who were trans remained in place.
Judge Lord Hodge said it was “not a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another”, while Downing Street said the ruling brought “clarity”.
An LGBTI campaign group, however, condemned the outcome, describing it as an “incredibly worrying” development for transgender people and a “huge blow to some of the most marginalised people in our society”.

In recent years, Bruce has worked with the Democrats in Congress during President Barack Obama’s first term, and on the staff of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. He has also served as the former PM’s chief of staff.

Wolpe writes, in his latest article, see link below, that “Donald Trump loved “Liberation Day”. There he was on Wednesday afternoon, launching the biggest global trade war since the 1930s – the one that ultimately fuelled the Great Depression. Trump effectively sent flowers and a card signed “America First” to grace the tombstones of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation. Together, they had spawned more than 75 years of global liberalisation of commerce and economic growth. From the Rose Garden, a farewell kiss from the White House”

LEARN MORE Anyone who’s ever woken up to an enthusiastic tail wagging by the bed or found comfort in a gentle paw on their lap knows that dogs have an incredible ability to lift our spirits and positively impact our mental health.
After a long day at work, there’s nothing like coming home to a friendly face. Especially one who doesn’t offer well-meaning advice or ask a bunch of questions and is simply happy to curl up on the couch with you.

Researchers have found that dogs can actually help us manage stress and anxiety.
So can dogs really affect our mental health? Let’s dive in.
Dogs impact on your mental health
“Dogs are the antidote to reality TV and social media. In front of a dog, you can just be. They don’t care if you’ve got makeup on or if you’re in a bad mood. They are the only ones who never offer solutions. And yet are incredibly helpful in their non-judgmental way of being,” explains author and trauma counsellor, Angelika von Sanden.
In her book Sit, Stay, Grow: How Dogs Can Help You Worry Less and Walk Into a Better Future, she explores how mindful interactions with our canine companions can transform our mental well-being.
“Working as a social worker and therapist for decades, I not only heard stories of heartbreaking pain but also about the many times dogs were named as the purpose to keep going, the shoulder to cry on, and the one steady and non-judgemental being in people’s life.”
Based on principles of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), the idea is that daily walks, playtime, and even just observing our pets can help us overcome negativity, find joy, and live more meaningful lives.
The key, Angelika says, is treating ourselves with the same kindness we extend to our animals.
“What if you treated yourself the same way you treat your dog?” she asks. “If you notice you talk to your dog worse than you talk to yourself, go to your dog and apologise! But usually, it’s the other way around. We treat our dogs with so much more love and patience than we give ourselves.”

Australians living... LEARN MORE Australians living with HIV and AIDS can look forward to greater financial security, as life insurers will treat their condition the same as any other medical condition.
The Council of Australian Life Insurers (CALI) has strengthened the Life Insurance Code of Practice to formalise the industry’s support of people living with HIV.
“Life insurance plays a vital role in providing a financial safety net for all Australians and these changes help to make it more accessible to more people,” said Christine Cupitt, CEO of CALI.
“These amendments reflect the modern society we live in and a deep commitment by our members to fairness. Life insurers recognise the significant advances in medical science that are transforming the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.”
While many life insurers have already implemented these practices, Ms. Cupitt said formalising them in the Life Insurance Code of Practice was a strong signal of the industry’s commitment to modern standards of privacy and fairness.
Among the changes, insurers will no longer ask about an individual’s sexual preferences and practices to determine their risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI), including HIV and AIDS, during the underwriting assessment.
Dr. John Rule, Senior Research Manager for the National Association of People with HIV Australia (NAPWHA), said he welcomed these reforms with a new sense of optimism.
“We are pleased to see that individuals living with HIV or AIDS will be treated just like any other medical condition when determining coverage. We look forward to continuing to work alongside the industry to advocate for Australians living with HIV and AIDS,” he said.
The changes represent an important step toward fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment within financial services.

LEARN MORE South Australia is moving to bring in laws forcing people to be tested for HIV despite a report in New South Wales describing similar legislation as ineffective and unneeded.
Health organisation Thorne Harbour Health has expressed strong opposition to the South Australian Government’s proposed Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) (Blood Testing) Amendment Bill 2024, citing concerns over its scientific validity, potential to spread disinformation, and its exacerbation of stigma toward people living with blood-borne viruses (BBVs).
The bill intends to protect frontline emergency services workers by mandating blood testing of individuals who spit at or bite them. Yet, expert bodies such as the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine have firmly stated that mandatory testing for BBVs is not an effective or evidence-based approach to public health.
“We support policies that ensure a safe workplace for all workers, including emergency services personnel. However, this bill is not an evidence-based approach to achieving that goal. It creates unnecessary anxiety for workers and does nothing to improve public health outcomes,” said Thorne Harbour Health Vice President and Secretary of the HIV Justice Network, Paul Kidd.
“The bill, as drafted, does not consider the actual risk of transmission,” said Kidd.
Throne Harbour Health argues that Testing should only be permitted where there is risk of transmission. HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C cannot be transmitted through saliva, meaning spitting does not pose a risk.
They also advocate that testing should only be ordered within 72 hours of alleged exposure, as this is the window in which prophylactic interventions (such as post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP) can prevent transmission. They say the proposed six-month time frame is ineffective and misleading.
They also highlight that emergency service workers should undergo immediate medical treatment if a risk is identified, rather than waiting for mandatory test results that may be misleading or delayed.

As the peak body for Victorian students, we consistently hear that many queer students are facing discrimination at school which impacts their wellbeing and engagement. While this is clearly a priority for Victorian students, we noticed that there is a real lack of data around this aspect of the school experience for LGBTIQA+ students. Given this, we decided to bridge this gap in research with the support of funding from the Healthy Equal Youth grant scheme.

What makes this project unique and especially valuable is its co-research basis. In approaching this project, we recognised the value of combining lived experience expertise with existing research. We did this by empowering a student co-researcher, Disha, to shape each aspect of the research process. Through this, VicSRC aimed to gather a comprehensive understanding of this research area in a way that is genuinely reflective of what students want and need to convey. You can read the report here!

*
Nine’s Big Miracles IVF docuseries is back for Season 3, airing every Wednesday on the 9Network for the next six weeks.

*
The series follows courageous couples and individuals as they experience the highs, lows, and sheer determination of trying to become parents.

*
Their story highlights the additional fertility challenges that many same-sex couples face – on top of the challenge of finding donor sperm.

*
This story includes the opportunity to interview Kaiti and Sally’s fertility specialist, Dr Dave Listijono as he reminds same-sex couples that the challenges of infertility can affect anyone.

“For me, reading is a way of understanding – a person, a feeling, a place ect, so when I came out, my first thought was to find a book that might help navigate what was going on. I remember discovering Hares and Hyenas and thinking, ok, I’ve got this – I just need to find the right book! Terribly naive, but I guess it goes back to how important representation is and how valuable it is to have a wealth of experiences reflected in what we read…fast forward and queer lit is much more mainstream, which is fantastic.”

“Newly published research has found clear evidence that openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, and queer+ (LGBTIQ+) Australian politicians were disproportionately targeted with personal abuse on social media at the last federal election. Given global trends, it’s unlikely to be any different this year.
Simply logging off is not an option for candidates, who need to communicate with voters. As a result, some politicians will continue to face risky online visibility”.

LEARN MORE Here’s what to know about Trump’s Executive Orders.
Attempt to Re-define Sex As Binary:
This order claims there are only two sexes, male and female, defined by the production of reproductive cells “at conception.” Science doesn’t agree with this definition—no embryo produces reproductive cells at conception. The goal is to push an ideology of erasure of both transgender and intersex people. This definition of sex doesn’t address people with variations in their sex traits, such as those with ovotestes who may produce both sperm and ova, or no gonads who produce neither. Like all EOs, the impact on intersex people will depend on how government agencies choose to interpret and enforce it.
What are we seeing right now? The most immediate impact has been difficulties for folks getting or renewing passports—we will continue to provide updates as this develops. You can read more in our Official Statement.
Restrictions on gender-affirming care:
This order seeks to prohibit access to healthcare for many transgender young people (including adults aged 18). The order likely impacts healthcare for people with variations in their sex traits. Intersex people also seeking gender-affirming care, or perceived to be, may find their healthcare restricted. Many intersex people also depend on providers who offer trans care such as endocrinologists due to their knowledge of hormones. When consensual care is banned, all young people risk losing access to necessary healthcare.
What are we seeing right now? While there is currently no enforcement, many hospitals are pre-emptively complying with the order and ending hormonal care for adolescents, such as puberty blockers. We collaborated on an explainer with LGBTQI and legal organizations on the EO to provide more information.
Restricting students from playing school sports:
This order is an attack on transgender girls in school sports, but also an attack on all girls and women. Enforcing strict “sex”-based sports policies will likely encourage harassment, scrutiny of women’s and girls’ bodies, and invasive exams. The order incorporates the administration’s previous redefinition of “male” and “female,” which leaves out some intersex people. It is unclear how this order will be enforced, but it’s possible some intersex students may be targeted due to visible differences, being out as intersex, or due to other forms of enforcement.
What are we seeing right now? While enforcement has not yet begun, any order targeting Title IX funding could put schools that do not comply at risk of losing financial support. You can learn more in our statement on Instagram or Facebook.
None of the EOs mention intersex people specifically—they are systematically scrubbing mentions of intersex people from government websites.]]>

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has shelved the proposed reforms to Australia’s 25-year-old environment laws, citing a lack of parliamentary support for the changes.
The decision breaks Labor’s 2022 election commitment to overhaul the protections. The Albanese government is now the latest in a string of governments that have tried and failed to reform the law known formally as the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
This is despite two major independent reviews calling for wholesale change.
Labor’s capitulation does not, however, change the facts. Australia’s natural environment is deteriorating rapidly. Laws are urgently needed to protect our nation’s valuable natural assets.
Establishing effective laws is an investment that will benefit Australia’s biodiversity, economy, cultural values, health and wellbeing. Nature is now a key 2025 election issue.

The highly pertinent case of a little-known independent candidate in the Victorian seat of Wannon has exposed a gaping hole in Australia’s electoral laws, which allow for misleading political advertisements in the lead-up to an election campaign. It’s all entirely legal and is already being exploited to try to shape the outcome of the coming federal election.
Conservative activist group Advance Australia has widely distributed digitally altered flyers attacking independent Alex Dyson, who is challenging senior frontbencher Dan Tehan.
It’s part of a campaign to damage Dyson’s electoral prospects after he helped slash the Liberal Party’s margin in the seat at the last election to less than 4%.
The material depicts Dyson ripping open his shirt in a “Superman” pose, to reveal a t-shirt bearing the official Greens party logo.

As anti-trans rhetoric and attacks reach a fever pitch in the US, young people, their families, and communities will rally across Australia in support of trans youth.

The actions are in response to QLD Health Minister Tim Nicholls announcing a pause on prescribing puberty blockers and hormone therapy to new public health patients under the age of 18.

Jackie Turner, Director of the Trans Justice Project (she/her) said, “This cruel ban is the first of its kind in Australia, and it must be reversed immediately. No one wants to see the hateful US-style scapegoating of communities happening here.”

“Governments cannot be allowed to ban vital, evidence-based healthcare solely on the basis of their political beliefs.”

“Communities nationwide, from Busselton and Wagga Wagga to Shepparton and Broome, are rallying today to show trans young people in Queensland that they are not alone.”

The Minister’s decision will halt evidence-based healthcare for 491 young people and their families – many who have been on the waiting list for months, and even years.

Hannah, A Brisbane mum whose daughter’s care has been impacted said, “This has been incredibly stressful for our family. My 15 year old has been on puberty blockers for four years and was just days away from going on HRT. Now that can’t happen. Like all teenagers, she just wants to look like her friends at school and express who she really is.”

“The Minister’s decision puts our young people’s lives at risk. As a parent I can’t stand by and watch that happen. The Queensland government must reinstate care and increase funding for the Queensland Children’s Gender Service.”

Peak medical bodies including the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, Australian Medical Association Queensland, and senior members of the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners have condemned the ban and warned that denying vital medical care to trans youth could have devastating consequences.
Rally attendees will be invited to donate to support the 491 young people who have been kicked off the waiting list in Queensland to seek access through the private system instead.

The day is organised by the Trans Justice Project, a trans-led organisation working to build a future where all trans and gender-diverse people are safe, celebrated, and free.

Dutton has again highlighted the “wasteful” 36,000 increase in public service jobs under Labor, which he says has made the Australian Public service “bloated and inefficient”.
While there is considerable political hyperbole and Trumpian allusions in Dutton’s statements, there are areas where legitimate savings could be made by whoever wins the coming election. That includes a second-term Albanese government, which would need to find efficiencies to offset promised wage increases”
